Ghosts aren't scary. You know what's scary? Questions. And this is the spookiest thread of the week!

Someone stole your Tanah-Chook! Would you like us to round up a posse to find the rotter?

"Gloam" is, as far as I can find, a variant of "gloom", as in darkness. I assume that gloam-foam is, thus, something that darkens the face - perhaps even some sort of anti-phosphorous, that throws the face into shadow when it might otherwise be lit! The Shadowy benefits of such a substance is obvious - concealing both one's presence (no reflections to give one away) and one's identity. The rather larger Watchful benefit is less clear. Perhaps gloam-foam has a chemical effect that heightens the senses; perhaps shadowing the eyes clarifies sight; perhaps it simply enables closer observation by concealing the observer.

Tanah-Chook lies off the coast of Venderbight. Perhaps it detached itself from Sir Frederick's username in order to go NORTH.

But now how will people know that he's the namesake of a republic founded by third-city revolutionaries? The "Tanah-Chook" seems to have departed from his signature as well.

Well, the Tanah-Chook was certainly the *distinctive* part of the name. Why, Sir Fredericks are ten a penny, sir! I can think of at least three others!

Spare the posse and spoil the rotter, as my oompah used to say... but, no, I've simply trimmed my name down to something a little easier to manage!

If last year is anything to go by, having all the upgraded companions will unlock a better version of the third option on the "One's Public" card, but that's not particularly important if you generally put on a fine show instead.

That's a good point, I'm not doing anything major at the moment, so I might pop off to the colonies a few times.

I've actually been considering buying the Finishing School, so I'll shell out for that. I wasn't sure what favours you could get from that--is it any kind? Constables is giving me a lot of trouble too.

Thanks to you both!

Finishing School can give Tomb Colonies, Urchin, Church, Bohemian, Revolutionary, Docks, and Great Game Favours, plus Society if you've played The Frequently Deceased. In all cases, you have to complete a carousel and you have a 50% chance of getting a favour from the student you pick for the final examination. It also refills your deck when you return to London.

Set off for Hunter's Keep. If your nightmares reach 8 there, you're sent back to the start of the carousel with your nightmares set to 5.

My seeking alt has just got to the point where they can well, start seeking but, what do I do now? I did the option in the Forgotten Quarter, got a Bad End and have my seeking up to 3 now, i've looked up some guides but i'm still a bit confused, some seem to say I have to wait a week for cards but others say I can raise my seeking by other means too? What do I do?

You can advance faster if you use resources, as outlined in the I'm a Candle guide. Appalling Secrets, mostly. If you have a lot of them and high Watchful this is doable for quite a few levels.
You'll come to the weekly point eventually though, unless you really want to spend a lot of resources. That one works best with a Starveling Cat and access to the Labyrinth of Tigers (1st Coil). In the Flit you go to the Cats and Bats storylet (must have advanced to that as well), pick cats and then the Starveling Cat. You'll get 3 Unaccountably Peckish (UP) each time you use it. Use it three times - you could use it less at lower levels, but it's not the best option.

Then you draw cards, and you can draw up to 9 different ones if you have 9 UP. Playing the Seeking option on them (the one that is available if you don't have Marsh-Mired) will give you a point in SMEN up to (Value of the UP card + 1). While you could, hence, rack up less UP and use lower cards while your SMEN is still low, the 7 to 9 cards are really the most non-crippling ones. Once you have your point in SMEN, you can't use this option for a week until Time, the healer takes Marsh-Mired from you. So when you've gotten your point, you go to the Labyrinth and get some refreshments, for -2 UP a go.

If you find yourself with a full hand of UP cards you don't want to use, you can use the Labyrinth as well, until you have UP low enough for them to disappear, then use the Starveling cat again, etc.

You can do this up to SMEN 28, when you can go for gaining Mr Eaten's Calling card for yourself, if you don't have it already.
http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Seeking_Mr_Eaten's_Name_(Guide) is a good resource for the whole process.

Are you closest to a Faction? You can use Marks to get Favours, but only if you're closest to a particular faction.

Yes, well, it clearly doesn't work that way, since I had the "spare" already when I drew the card this morning, and was only able to spend the "new" one. I assume that once the player has acquired all the items that need more than one mark, the card will no longer show options that allow a mark to be received but not spent.

I'm confused by your description of what happened, or you might be confused about how this works. Once per draw of Secrets & Spending, you can either acquire OR spend a Mark. If you had a spare Mark, and you drew the card this morning and spent a Mark, then the Mark that you spent was the "spare" one. You did not acquire a "new" mark unless you somehow drew Secrets & Spending twice.

Ambitions don't really have any real SMEN content to speak of. They are some distant second-hand connections, but you won't really miss out whichever one you pick. Nemesis has probably the smallest lore connections, but it's also the closest to SMEN in theme, with ideas of justice, sacrifice, and revenge being important to it. SMEN is self-contained in general, so you won't miss anything if you just focus on it.

Nah. You just need some cash, specifically enough to endow a University fellowship, and a moderate supply of Abominable Salts. Voila! Benthic connections as high as 20, if you have the supplies.

So, I indulged a few tigers a little too much while in Port Carnelian and have lost all my Imperial Legitimacy. I hastened back to the Foreign Office to regain it, and the carousel led me...nowhere. Do I actually need to spend fate to regain this?

Trips to the actual tomb colonies are also a option. A number of cards in the tomb colonies give favours, and of course getting there. Not particularly profitable, but doesn't cost anything but time. There's now three clothing items that give +1 scandal to help you get there.

Alternatively, when you have a ship (which you'll need eventually anyway to progress with the Ambition), you can easily get Uncanny Incunabulum on Mutton Island.

(you can also get the Incunabulum in the Cave of the Nadir, if you've opened the path there).

This was noted. I remember reading a thread on the forums about this yesterday or the day before, and now I can't find it anymore. The change coincided with certain current events on the Surface, and the discussion got somewhat spirited.

Suffice it to say, yes the text is different, and I believe the mechanics are not.

The mechanics are exactly the same (including the rare success).

This was changed since it didn't convey what FBG wanted it to, and (especially given recent events) made some people uncomfortable (which was not the intent of the option).

We've discussed it a bit in this thread..
