LoL. Working at Failbetter must be a hoot. I bet they must really love us. This is what happens when you get a any significant number of people interested in your work. People like it for a variety of reasons, so any change will be met with resistance from some subset. Very notably, since people often get this wrong, the complaining is from different subsets; it's not like there's some small group of people who will complain about everything, but rather, for every change, there is a small subset that will complain about that particular thing.
Honestly they should take it as a complement; it means people are invested. If no one complained, that means no one cares. Though of course, there's still proper etiquette to consider; people need to be respectful both in their criticism and their response to their peer's criticism.

A new portrait for his Amused Lordship would also come in handy if he were to, say, run for Mayor. I understand a few people have nominated him.

I don't mind the new portrait, I have just grown fond of the old one; it'll just take me a few weeks to get used to it. Habit and familiarity are things Fallen London breeds, so I can definitely understand why changes to it can bother people.

I really dislike this one, actually. All portrait updates so far have simply improved the graphics; this one (for some reason) is in a different style. And what's up with making his beard red all of a sudden?
I think the old one was a whole lot better at showing his personality too. Just look at that grin and wrinkles! edited by SpellingSword on 10/26/2017

It definitely looks.... strange? next to all the other stuff. Even newer things. I think it's something about the flecks in the beard and around the edges of his figure making him look like a JPEG artifact.

It's a good portrait by itself, but it very much feels... not FL. His Amused Lordship just stands out like a very sore thumb among most other artwork in the game now.
And I have not a single clue as to what the teal stuff on his brows is. Or why he suddenly dyed his beard redder than the fires of hell.

I just worry that it's the beginning of makeover that will end with all the artwork in the game being made realistic

It actually was not all that uncommon for turn-of-the-century art exhibits to provoke massive public controversies and even riots :P Certain avant garde performers, like the Futurists, even made the provocation of riots a deliberate part of their program (they later played up the whole "we bloodied our fists" angle very heavily when trying to solicit patronage from Mussolini).
Anyway, I very much like the new art (which as gronostaj astutely pointed out, isn't totally realistic). Although my favorite FL art so far has to be the crisp, heavily stylized posters we saw during the 1894 Election.
I think these conveyed far more than the candidate's face and I was honestly a little disappointed when I saw that they had switched to a more portrait style art, lovely as it was (particularly for the Campaigner). I like the portrait style, but not as much as I like abstraction and symbolism. . edited by Anne Auclair on 10/26/2017

I like it, I think my only complaint is it seems a bit more..painty? Then the rest of their newer art but I don't mind it that much

I'm pretty partial to the old Lordship, myself. There's something about that blocky beard, the squinted eyes, the gritted teeth in what can loosely be described as a permanent smile. The new art's pretty alright by itself, but it's just... either missing the charm, or having a completely different charm, you know? And I'm not really a fan of red beards, either.
But hey, it's all opinion, really. And I can see why people'd like the new design. That beard's pretty majestic, red or not.

I like the style, I really like the realistic look of the majority of the new art.
But as others have noted, he doesn't look amused. His Lordship looks as though he had his image taken during the midst of a drunken cough.
Perhaps it's the eyes? Maybe the image looks worse via mobile? I cannot be certain.

I think the new pictures have preserved a lot of the charm and added a lot of nice details. But this one just seems off, why did they make the beard such a fiery red? Why are there such odd colors in it? It looks like something weird happened to the portrait as they transferred it to the game from where they made it, It does in fact look like some sort of jpeg artifact snuck in . I also agree that the smile doesn't look right, the squint makes him look half asleep and the smile looks like a cross between a forced cheesy grin and an unkind smirk. Its a blemish on the collection of new art. If those issues get fixed it would look great like the other new ones.

I like the new portraits generally, but this one needs more work. 'JPEG artifact' is exactly the right comparison, it looks like I wandered into a 1990s Sierra adventure game.

If you ask me, it seems to be some sort of painterly ES poster featuring the Lordship that was shrunk roughly into icon size.
The complaints might be partly fueled by the relative lack of changes of other companions and the general atmosphere of outrage too, since this one is downright elaborate.
I am certain people aren't that anguished over it, anyway, especially if this heralds the coming of more Dilmun Club contents. edited by Estelle Knoht on 10/27/2017
