I asked if ending today meant that confessions could still be used to upgrade today or not, but nobody ever answered. :/ Sad to see some people getting bit by that.

1. I had the lance and all companions well before today. Sure, that was hard, but no Fate had been given in this round. If one is determined to get the companions only, that should be doable with less BDR too.
You have the Boneless Consort, I can tell without looking. I had 28 BDR and what you're describing would be literally impossible for me. I just barely made it to all companions. I think you are underestimating the difference literally one item can make. At that point, this isn't even a lategame player vs not lategame player thing. I AM a lategame player. edited by MidnightVoyager on 11/7/2017

Are there a lot of people who carefully ground to be just shy of POSI eligibility for the festival, without stepping across that line? But, speaking more broadly... well, yes, a very low level player won't be able to take advantage of everything the game has to offer. That is a rather traditional and commonplace arrangement for games - the more you have advanced, the more options are available to you, and the more likely you are to achieve success. I think totally new players were fine - they have many story options to choose from, and Hallowmas adds to them and gives awesome free stuff to boot. Completely new players couldn't have afforded most unupgraded companions, but they could get the lance and upgrade the one they got for free, or even a cat if they lucked out to rescue her from a box. Nah, the problem is players who have exhausted easily accessible content, currently going through various POSI grinds and struggling to reach Nota 8, were in the same boat.
(It seems like experienced players are overestimating the difficulty of becoming POSI as it is right now. It took me 6 weeks without trying, I didn't even bother switching equipment sets.)

Just about anyone who isn't aiming for full house or adding a lance to it will have a great time with little effort spent, actually!
It is much harder for anyone who wanted to keep their streak of whole menageries, though, and they are more likely to hang around here.

I can't tell you what level of Hallowmas Edition it is, but the lance gets you a front page picture. And about
25 CP of Making Waves and 2.50E worth of stuff
. Had to look that up, but - marvellous painting, and that's an Obdurate Stallion if ever I saw one! And, I daresay, a sterling example of the proper way to wear "Fired with Ferocity".

How delightfully contemporary! I might just go ahead and claim that Willametta (my alt, she got the lance) was the model for the painting. Because its absolutely true, she was Podkowiński's model. She had to borrow the Obdurate Stallion from Billy Cosmos the !, as she did not yet have one of her own in 1893.

Agreeing with a lot of what's already been said here:
Mainly, the fact that you have to obtain every single companion for the large interview, instead of simply being able to have the ones you have be interviewed individually, despite the fact that there was a lot of dissatisfaction on the forums about that last year already--I'd sort of assumed FBG would have changed that because of the feedback. I'd like to know more about them, and scouring the forums for echoes of their interviews is a bit silly and tiring.
Secondly, the art. This was actually a surprise for me, as last Hallowmas it was a delight and a huge (probably biggest, as aside from the Tigress I already had higher-stat companions) incentive to upgrade your companions and see how their icon would be changed, from the simple (a tiara for the Tigress, an eyepatch for the Urchin, colour change and eye scar for the Henchman...), to the completely redrawn (Haunted Goldfish), to the elaborate (Alluring Accomplice: colour change, hairstyle change, and earrings/glasses depending on the branch). It gave them more personality, and I gave them fitting names to go with those. Now their descriptions might still be amusing or interesting, but icon-wise they're just lazy copies and you couldn't tell them apart from their originals if you don't mouse over them.
Finally, though this may just be a personal impression: it seemed far harder to get enough confessions this year than last. Last year, I think the only companion I missed out on was the Fate-locked one (which I was quite salty about since that was the only thing keeping me from the large interview). This year, I only managed to get half and that's with spending Fate; I didn't focus on Feducci or even bother trying to get the Lance, either.
This years' Hallowmas just seemed... unsatisfying, somehow. Despite the Bat with Attitude finally getting its promised purpose, a lovely upgraded Kitty companion, and a Weasel that manages to be more popular than you yourself, the companions felt somewhat... lackluster. Perhaps it's to do with the lack of new art. Perhaps I'm simply in a critical mood this Hallowmas.
All I know is that I had a good bit more fun last year.

I'd like to know more about them, and scouring the forums for echoes of their interviews is a bit silly and tiring. I think there's two main reasons this doesn't work with the current design. First, they already have to write a bunch of individual companion interviews on top of the other interviews. Writing a bunch more interviews for specific companion combinations would be a huge pain; an interview that just requires some number of the companions would be difficult to program and uninterestingly vague. Second, the interviews serve as the end point of Hallowmas; they give rewards much higher than in repeatable storylets, and they set a special quality tracking how the event ended for you. Allowing you do to multiple interviews would cause issues with both.
What would be really cool is if another version of the storylet remained open after the first interview, letting you interview all your companions without a reward or changing the interview quality. Of course, some players would inevitably choose the wrong interview the first time and cause issues for support...

Someone mentioned at the beginning of the holiday that, even for endgame players with a lot of BDR, reaching Notability 8 is three times as hard as reaching Notability 5. I'm pretty sure it's even worse with lower BDR. Even with more free confessions, this was a big issue. Especially because it's realistic to grind to Notability 6 to not wait for the Amanuensis, but it's not at all realistic to grind to Notability 9. I'm glad Failbetter decided to give more free confessions but I really, really hope they reconsider this design next year.

It's ~2.5 times as difficult with 0 BDR, and looking solely at the multiplier it gets worse the more you have. With 32 BDR, it takes 0 making waves to reach notability 5, so the difficulty increase is infinite :P

Wait SERIOUSLY? That's how the math works out? Jesus christ, no wonder people with that managed to get the companions and the lance.
I like my zubmarine, but I'm already considering losing it for just that 1 BDR if notability is going to continue to be so needed for things. But that's insane. Too bad the Consort's so expensive and I don't really have the money for it. edited by MidnightVoyager on 11/8/2017

I'd be quite happy if gaining a companion increased a quality like "your hallowmas menagerie", and that quality increased the final reward (except the menagerie option). That would make it feel a lot less all or nothing, while not needing all of the combinations of companions.
