Mysteries are fire. Quick questions are small fires. Embers, maybe. Firelighters. Cigar butts. Anyhow, here's this week's thread for quick questions and answers. (Quick answers smoulder.)

Is it worth going back to the Cave of Nadir to upgrade equipment? I didn't realize that was an option my first visit rip Upgrading a parabola-linen suit or frock to strange-shore via A Familiar Face is worth it for the story text alone. The strange-shore clothings are also the shadowy best-in-slot for those of us who are above wearing ratskin. You're above wearing ratskin, aren't you?
The irrigo goggles (luminous goggles upgraded via A Weakness in the Air) are no better than an Exceptional Hat, and are outclassed by the top-of-the-line watchful hats at the Bazaar. I'm a midnighter, so I picked up the goggles regardless; they're a perfect match for my strange-shore parabola suit and my shrine and seal of St Joshua.
The Forgotten Spidersilk Slippers (via An Altarful of Strangers) are outclassed only by the Renown: Constables 40 item, but you may want to consider skipping them anyways. They're made of spider silk, collected from live spiders. The spiders down here are not especially friendly, to say the least. I'll only wear something which was made using a spider if it was made using a dead spider, like these chitinous gauntlets of mine. Protect your feet with a good pair of kingscale boots, to show those slithery interlopers that we mean business!
Last but not least, a nodule of warm amber can be turned into a nodule of violet amber via An Altarful of Strangers. It only gives persuasive +3, but its mouseover text is the "do you recall" poem, and I appreciate having that text easily accessible in my weapons list. edited by Anchovies on 10/27/2017

It takes longer than lethal sparrings, but I grinded Dangerous to 200 by repeatedly doing War of Assassins and choosing the dangerous options as often as possible. Besides Dangerous, you gain the reward at the end of each round.

I answered over in "Hallowmas is Here" as well but since the question is in both places:
Barse wrote:
The quality tracking the number of free confessions you've picked up is "Hallowmas: The Aftermath of an Audacious Theft". Currently the lock is at 4 and picking up a free confession adds 1 to that quality, i.e. once you've picked up 5 the storylet is locked. In a few days (or tomorrow, or whenever) FBG will raise that lock to 5, allowing everyone to pick up another. This does mean that yes, you can leave "Aftermath of an Audacious Theft" at 1, wait until the end of the holiday when the storylet locks at 13 or whatever, and pick them all up at once.
It's only the other kind - Temperance Campaigner, Clathermont, Filmmaker - that time out after a few days.
EDIT: It's been clarified that saving all confessions till week 2 in fact does nothing to improve any odds - seems like confessions 1-whatever will always draw from the week 1 pool no matter when you draw them. So go grab those confessions while you can! edited by Barse on 10/26/2017

Something I have been meaning to ask for a while, but why are there three columns in the icons on the left of the game (IE watchful, shadowy, dangerous, persuasive, notability, etc.)? I vaguely remember their being on other feature that took up some space outside second chances, but I have not seen it or anything like it in ages. There used to be two different kinds of second chances, I think - at once point it was possible to have, for example, some Hastily Scrawled Warning Notes and a few Anticandles to provide Shadowy second chances.

It is quite luck-based, but some options are extremely profitable. The upgrades themselves vary based on equipment, but you can upgrade up tp the most shadowy boots in the slot. I would advise using the wiki to know what cards to use and which equipment to bring.

Criminals were indeed the first, but Revolutionaries were one of the last (and Urchins converted somewhere in the middle).
Calling in Favours in the Flit has been a card for a long time (since at least mid-2013, while the Favours/Renown announcement was mid-2015). it was probably made a card because it was always superior to the other Call in Favours options (even when is used to trade Connected).

I do it because I want to advance the Liberation. I hadn't even considered the rewards.
I've been using most of the proscribed material as bedding for all those weasels that have moved in, and given the rest to my ever growing army of Urchins. Nothing urchins love more than mucky books, it seems. Well, apart from gin and ciggies, maybe.

A good source for Aeolian Screams as well, and I don't believe the wounds quality is capped there It's not. When I was there, I've used all my Stormy-Eyed (except the last CP which I use to accept the gift), to gain 189 Aeolian Screams (and as many Wounds).

The Owl is definitely worth your while, I would say. Increasing it from 16 to 18 would save you 71 CP of MW each time you grind from N8 to N9, 63 from N7 to N8, and so on. You can grab up the Seal on your way out to Bullbone Island the first time, and it'll probably take you two trips to the island to get 500 crypto notes, if you don't have any yet (if you have extra collated research or other items to trade for notes, you could probably cut it down to one Bullbone trip). Overall, a big time saver in the long run, even when you add up 2-3 zee voyages and 1-2 Bullbone carousels (you don't have to go through the breeding carousels in the Labyrinth when breeding the Owl).
That said, it's going to take a while to reach N8/9 with 18 BDR. Just going from N8 to N9 at that level takes over 550 CP of MW. (The reason people are saying N9 instead of N8 is because you can't force-draw the Amanuensis card without at least one point of Notability. So, if you spend all 8 points and go to zero, you have to wait to draw it again to reach level 1, and you're wasting grinding time.) edited by earthbourn on 10/24/2017 edited by earthbourn on 10/24/2017
My view is to stop at N8 and wait for the card (assuming you have the time to draw cards frequently), using the extra actions to regroup. I typically use tier 3 conversions and need to get across the abyss from absinthe to visions of the surface. Or even the double jumps when you have stacks of 1000 or so.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.
No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

What's the best Dangerous grind for a high-level player? My other three stats are all at or above 200 without modifiers, but my Dangerous is still languishing at a measly 152.
I like grinds best that grant something in addition to the desired quality - i.e. I liked to grind Shadowy using Affair of the Box, because I got a monetary benefit as well, and I used the MW/Notability grind to build up my Persuasive. Any suggestions?

War of Assassins is also one of the most highly-profitable, albeit card-based, London grinds (though Collections of Curiosities which you then trade to Tomb-Colonists). So if you intend to keep playing for a while, even if you don't draw the tomb-colonist card too often if you stockpile a bunch of Collections you'll eventually end up trading them in, for a nice - if slightly delayed - profit. Not like there's inflation, though.

Probably a glitch, or you have some nightmare reducing equipment.

@Caroline Augusta Baroness Aubrecker (love the name, by the way): You might be equipped with the Bejewelled Cane and Cheerful Goldfish. Also, if you reach menace 8 you can, instead of clicking "onwards", navigate to the "myself" tab and equip menace-reducing gear or drink laudanum/tinctures/etc. It's a handy trick for when you really can't afford to be inconvenienced, although I do recommend stopping by the menace areas now and then for variety's sake. Except prison. Prison is bloody dull.
