i've been holding on to it for a while, haven't started the story yet today finally accidentally sold the the thing, is there a way to get it back?

Selling it before paying any fate for the story simply resets the story's quality, which means that you should just run into the black painting again at some point in the near future. edited by Vavakx Nonexus on 10/4/2017

The only way to be permanently rid of it, that is. You can sell the painting, but if you do that the card eventually comes back and attempts to lure you into the story again.
