Didn't one of the recent Exceptional Stories strongly imply that she is one of the Duchess' sisters, fled to (and presumably changed by) Parabola? I sure wish I could remember to echo things to my journal.

I sure wish I could remember to echo things to my journal. I can't find the exact Echoes, but yes, mostly. In The Attendants (ES for August), the eldest sister is associated with red and queens. I was under the impression she was associated with red hands specifically, but I can't find the echo right now.
That still leaves a lot to be answered, though.
What is the House of the Feather? It's different from the Palace the sisters constructed.
What is the nature of the Avatar mentioned in the destiny?
Why is she associated with Dreams of Chess, and does that imply a deeper connection to the Great Game?
I agree that the Red-Handed Queen is near the top of the list of mysteries I would like to learn more about.

I sure wish I could remember to echo things to my journal. I think that was one of the Keys in The Attendants, correct? That ES covered all of the Duchess's sisters, I think, as well. (You might try here for further lore, although it's also mostly speculation... If the red-handed queen is any of these, it seems, to me anyhow, to most likely be the fourth?)
(No relation to the Bloody-Handed Queen from Wednesday in Parabola, yes? I've heard she's meant to be the Captivating Princess, and of no relation to the Duchess or her sisters.)
I really, really doubt one of the Duchess's sisters is the Red-Handed Queen. For one thing, the eldest sister is explicitly dead. That's why her door is "red as the death of queens". The Red-Handed Queen is very likely the same entity as the Bloody-Handed Queen anyways.

Ambition: Nemesis confirms that the Red-Handed Queen's mortal avatar is
Dr Carrywell.
Whether she's a human woman with a Parabolan aspect, or an imaginary creature with a human form, she seems restricted to those two things in her manifestation for now, if the Fingerkings' implications can be trusted. Personally, my question is "Who is the glove maker, and who is the glove?" edited by Gul al-Ahlaam on 10/3/2017

there was also a discussion among the Sunless Seas folks regarding her being the Red Handed Queen's avatar, as her character in the SS uses that same image - but other than the game assigning the same image to her and the Red-Handed Queen (well, the game even assigns the same image to the Blind Bruiser, Blue Jack and Devious Henchman), i wonder if there's another indication that she is really her mortal avatar?

I wonder if Alexis had the exact idea of Second City lore or just some vague directions. The Attendant as it appears seems largely a post-Alexis Thing, and so does the House of Feathers. The only other place it's mentioned is in SSk iirc.

The images are both the same and unique. So it may not be explicitly confirmed, but very strongly implied. They also have at least one thematic similarity:
Both are traitors.
edited by menaulon on 10/3/2017

There are many cases where the same image is used for multiple persons.

This took quite some digging around, but I feel like there's too many strong hints around to prove that she really is the mortal avatar of the Red-Handed Queen, and not just the case of similar image.
Firstly, while looking for Dr Carrywell in Venderbight with Ambition:Nemesis and sufficient Dreams of Chess a card will show up about a tomb-colonist challenging us to chess, because the pieces told him our name. The pieces said we're looking for the Red-Handed Queen who has the knife (while before this we were never mentioned to go seek for her, only Dr Carrywell).
http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Go_over_when_he_beckons%3F -> and of course, the nice addition of the lovely Red-Handed Queen image
If we're successful, he'll surrender and topple his own king (note that in the Dreams of Chess continuity, the Beleaguered King might end up being defeated by the Red-Handed Queen's efforts). But if we lose, the flavor text describes how our pieces fell to "his merciless knights and his inquisitorial bishops".
These two chess-pieces were also mentioned in A dream about the Red-Handed Queen, where we dream about being her.
http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/A_dream_about_the_Red-Handed_Queen
The dream describes that the Red-Handed Queen is trying to "stay several steps ahead of those other assassins, the One-Eyed Bishop and the Lonely Knight". Whether the assassins are chasing her, or are her competitors in pursuing something, I don't know.
And perhaps the most important part of that dream which ties back to Dr Carrywell:
"You can go anywhere. You use secret passages to enter the rooms of your enemies, vulnerable in their sleep."
Remember that Dr Carrywell is powerful because she had been amassing information from the Grand Sanatorium's inhabitants. Those are her "secret passages" to sneak through her enemies' defense, who would be asleep (red honey connection? Or just that Carrywell's simply involved with the Fingerkings?).
About the Red Handed Queen: If you go to Venderbight in Ambition: Nemesis and have A Game of Chess ≥ 5, they literally just tell you who she is, name and all.EDIT: It's this option. No speculation required. ^_~ edited by Gul al-Ahlaam on 10/21/2017
