I think Poor Edward is what you'd get if the story were about a prince setting up a sealed palace of many rooms where the red death was on the inside.

Is it a political prison? I thought they selected orphans mostly at random, or based on the criteria of the experiments.

Yeah, Clarabelle's predicament is a bucket o' squick factor. This upcoming act of Light Fingers is probably going to hit on that angle even harder, what with the plans to find a moon-miser broodmother and perform a crab abortion. Crabortion?

Gul al-Ahlaam wrote:
Worth noting that Fires' "gains" in the Orphanage are heavily implied to be the salvation of London and all her citizens.
Are you basing this on Fires's attitude towards London as shown in the Affair of the Box? Light Fingers itself doesn't shed light on the orphanage's larger purpose beyond the implication that it's a mad science laboratory for love stories.

The phrase "Mr Fires's gains" creates the amusing mental image of Mr Fires working out in a fully-equipped dirigible-borne gymnasium.

If I'm not much mistaken, that intimidating figure in the mask is Poor Edward, who features in Ambition: Light Fingers. He's one of London's less pleasant characters, and that is really saying something.

While I appreciate that you and half the others in this thread have their head dunked in the gutter, Edward is a seriously creepy dude, and the Orphanage in question is definitely not like those involved with the more scandalous corners of society.
In case anyone isn't aware, the Orphanage is basically Mr Fire's personal political prison where inmates are tortured and experimented on to serve his gains. Light Fingers has some of the darkest material in Fallen London and a large portion of it is related to this place: diabolical science experiments, being buried alive until you manage to commit suicide and escape via death, constant mind-breaking torture to passify the inmates, the concept of the government in London somehow being more shady than we thought, and the implications of dubious consent in relation to a main character in the questline carrying a hybrid-experiment child. The only place I've seen similar themes to that are with the Mountain of Light's child Mt Nomad, and even that's more vague than this.
Overall, Light Fingers is the best Ambition in my opinion, but it's also by far the most morbid. Can't wait to see how it plays out.
Hey, at least losing a £1.3pa scarab grind isn't as bad as losing an option to trade a point of connected: masters for 50 first-city coins. *glares at Heart's Desire*

Regardless, you want beetles? I've got beetles. Come on down to the Labyrinth of Tigers! Use toadstools and a stick on a plated seal for an average of 440 scarabs (70% chance for 500, 30% for 300). Putting to zee and nabbing a seal takes some 20 actions, and breeding with two methods takes 15 actions, so you're looking at a competitive 12.57 scarabs per action. Don't worry; if your beetle source is lost as you work against a Master's unnatural breeding project, you can always get more beetles by helping a Master's unnatural breeding project!

Of course, the truly dedicated Light Fingers scarab-grinders are still back in room 387 of the orphanage. So beautiful...

He's honestly not all that villainous, it's just that he's outrageously creepy. Like, he's the scariest dude in Fallen London by a nautical mile. Also he's very charismatic, in his freaky way, so there's an element of attraction to balance and accentuate the terror. Or maybe that's just me. ^_~ God I'm so glad he's back. I can't wait to see how he survived. I hope he just walked right through the carnage like a dapper Jason Voorhies.

What is it that makes Edward so terrible? Is it just that he buries you alive rather than killing you outright? Does that really make him worse than, say, the apocalyptic evil of the spider-councils?

He's even polite enough to warn you ahead of time that he'll make you suffer if you keep poking your nose around the orphanage. Regardless of what exactly goes on in there, you're still entering a non-public building without permission.
Here's a crazy thought: what if Poor Edward wants you to free Clarabelle, but is so closely watched by their superior(s) that they have to try to stop you or else be replaced by someone who would definitely stop you? If deterring people from snooping on the orphanage is so important, why doesn't he just permanently kill your character? Instead of beheading you and dumping you in the river or dicing you up and feeding you to dogs, he puts you in a box which can be escaped in several ways. Further still, why does he give you Lethean tea leaves, one of the very few things which can free a person from the orphanage?

Another Light Fingers question: The orphanage has or had a moon-miser (its fate is unknown with the orphanage destroyed or damaged), and was using moon-milk to instill the obsessions of the orphanage's subjects. Affair of the Box reveals that Stones also had a moon-miser, and was using the moon-milk to create soldiers of some sort. Poor Edward is an agent of Mr Fires. Jasper and Frank have worked for Mr Fires in the past (e.g. the meeting with Soap in the clay quarters), and in the AotB storyline they're working for Mr Stones. Their pursuit of Dr Vaughan in Light Fingers could be work on behalf of either Stones or Fires (my guess is Stones). Does all this mean that Mr Fires and Mr Stones have or had competing moon-milk projects? Is there anything more about this outside of Light Fingers and Affair of the Box?
Not at all. She's creepy but can be very lovely and tender. We have a good understanding and mutual respect. In fact, I like her a lot (always a delight when she visits my Salon).

Edward is creepy in a menacing, vicious, violent manner. He's nastier and more dangerous and harmful than Jack-of-Smiles.

Are you basing this on Fires's attitude towards London as shown in the Affair of the Box? Light Fingers itself doesn't shed light on the orphanage's larger purpose beyond the implication that it's a mad science laboratory for love stories.

Fires' experiments seem to be geared toward inducing more and more abstract forms of love. First toward other people, then other species, then inanimate objects, abstract concepts, locations. There's some stuff about "loving London" IIRC, and in the Affair of the Box it's indicated that he loves this place, wants the Bazaar to stay. At some point and again this is IIRC, he talks about wanting to the Bazaar to love London, to see it as he does. Not much of a stretch to say he wants to Moon-Milk the Bazaar, I don't think.

  • Now that I'm writing this theory down it seems less "heavily implied" and more "entirely possible to infer." Hmm. Either way, food for thought, even if I'm no longer nearly as sure of it as I was before.

    The Captivating Princess.

The Princess may be polite, but she's about as atrocious of a person as Edward.

What is it that makes Edward so terrible? Is it just that he buries you alive rather than killing you outright? Does that really make him worse than, say, the apocalyptic evil of the spider-councils?

I think he seems worse *because* he's human. We expect monsters to behave horribly. It's different when you encounter an evil human being.

Even Jack-of-Smiles doesn't give off such a sinister and creepy vibe.

Alright, it's official. Never look to Ambitions for your love life. (Except for Mr. Pages. I guess I'm drawn to bookish guys)

I don't think this update is going to finish Light Fingers. If I remember right, this was to be the penultimate update, not the final one; and Light Fingers is I think one update behind the rest of the ambitions currently, so this will catch it up.

Of course, finishing all the ambitions could be next on the docket, but we don't know, it hasn't been announced.

    Think "Orphanage".

(And not the one you can establish in your Town House).

Worth noting that Fires' "gains" in the Orphanage are heavily implied to be

  •
the salvation of London and all her citizens.
Though we'll have to see if new developments introduce a twist or subvert that setup in some way.

While I appreciate that you and half the others in this thread have their head dunked in the gutter, Edward is a seriously creepy dude, and the Orphanage in question is definitely not like those involved with the more scandalous corners of society.

Alright, as fun as it is to have our heads buried in the gutter instead of dealing with Monsieur Ed, t'isn't the topic.

I've made this topic over here so that we can harbor our Neathy desires while keeping up with Light Fingers here... for the week or so the topic's relevant for, anyways.

So the thread of this story picks up out at Zee at Dr Vaughn's encampment, yes? Just wondering if I should plan to camp out there overnight on the 25th to get a head-start on things.

I would advise not doing that.

Much thanks, you saved me a pointless Zee voyage! Not that I mind zailing, but that would have lost me about a day of getting started on this.

On a side note, I really hope the airship is an item that I get to keep. Acquiring a dirigible is a dream for my character (that, and marrying a devil).

That said, what happened to the Music Hall Singer? And when will I be able to thrash the h--- of Poor Edward?
