I've no fear of the grave, Hesperidean and all. If you'd like to provide me with more ribbons, I'd be happy to accept your requests.

Happy to send fellow wearers of the Black Ribbon to the Boatman - with Feducci as our new mayor, it is only proper to Duel

First, I want to point out that lethal sparring uses the exact same mechanic as regular sparring. The only difference is some text at the beginning, and of course the end result.

Second, this is also the same as chess matches, except the sparring uses Dangerous/Shadowy and you can use Dream qualities to help your attack, while in chess you use Watchful/Persuasive and different options are presented based on a random value chosen at the beginning of the match.

The match itself consists of 5 social actions (3 for the initiator, 2 for the invitee). The 3 middle actions are challenges. The winner is determined based on a best-of-three of these challenges. That is: nothing you choose impacts the next steps. Any choice you make only impacts the current challenge.

Details:
• Step #1: P1 send an invitation
 • Step #2: P2 accepts the invitation; chooses a Dangerous/Shadowy attack
 • Step #3: P1 chooses a Dangerous/Shadowy attack, potentially using Dreams
 • Step #4: P2 chooses a Dangerous/Shadowy attack, potentially using Dreams
 • Step #5: P1 complete the match. Rewards/penalties are applied

Each of the three challenges (in steps 2-4) seems to be a skill check. So luck plays a factor, but the one with the higher level in that stat has an advantage. I'm not sure how that Dream qualities play into this. The simplest guess is that your relevant dream level is added to your chosen stat (Dangerous/Shadowy) when doing the skill check.

Every challenge (steps 2-4) awards the winner 1 x "Sparring: Bouts Won". Whether you see this message or not, you can see this in your qualities, under Stories. This is how you can know for sure that whatever you chose in any round affects only that round - one of the players always gains 1 x "Sparring: Bouts Won" every challenge round.

The winner is the one who has at least 2 x "Sparring: Bouts Won" by the end of Step #4.
Following the mechanic it would appear that the Initiator of the duel is at a huge disadvantage (which would follow the results I have seen so far).

P1 starts the duel and P2 can quickly look at P1's profile to see if they are setup in Dangerous or Shadowy gear and attack where they are weak. Unless there is a large mis-match P2 should win the first round. Even if there is a mismatch, the dreams quality will likely make up the difference.

P1 then gets to do the same to P2 likely winning the second round. Then in round 3 P2 gets to attack, winning that round and the match.

Has anyone won a match that they started? If so, by how much did you out-class your opponent?

i did, but it's a much more rare occurence than winning a duel one has been invited to. from what I can tell, around 30 levels of stat difference is a solid enough bet on out-classing your opponent, though luck is also involved to some degree

That makes sense as Nightmares are likely to get you between 15-20 and being in the wrong gear even if you are trying to balance the two stats effectively would be another 20 points of loss (unless you are a Licentiate).

With that, I feel it is only Sportsman like to offer anyone that sends me a duel invite an invite back from me in return. That way both of us get a ribbon.

Too bad FG didn't make the system a little more balanced

I have just got my first stabbing since a long time.
Does anybody know how dreams impact the bout? I know they make the attack stronger, but does it matter which one I choose?

Hey, there. Shameless plug incoming. There's this nifty sheet/leaderboard kind of thing that I started, called the Sanguine Ribbon Society. There are a bunch of people from the FL subreddit so far, but I decided to branch out to y'all as well. It's nothing really original, but it's neat and organized and auto-sorts. Feel free to join and challenge anyone!

I won my very first bout, and haven't won any since, and my last bout was initiated by my opponent, not by me. Thanks for the explanation, though; I was taking into account my Dangerous but not my Shadowy rank.

I'm so pleased with this new feature. With my Dangerous at 200 I stopped sparring competitively and started doing it only to help lower level players raise their Dangerous. Now that there's a version of sparring with higher stakes I have an excuse to go all-out with my equipment. I might even start using Notability to raise my Dangerous past its standard cap.

Quite literally, hit me up.
