Well, happily, we now have our Election subforum to cover election questions - so here's this week's thread for general short inquiries!

Probably a very lame question, but - where can I find what my Making Waves quality is? Shouldn't it be indicated in bottom-left corner, as basic Qualities and Menaces?

I wish, and I don't know why they don't show it there. But right now the only way to look at it is to go to the "myself" tab and search through the "story" section until you find it.

You can also go to the "Attend to Matters of Society" in your lodgings and mark the option to summon the Amanuensis card as a Plan.

This way you can always go to the Plans tab and hover over the Making Waves requirement of that option to see how much you have vs how much you need.

I have a couple questions:

1. What's the best way of grinding Connected: Masters? Currently I'm doing Proscribed Materials from unfinished business, in order to gift them to Mr. Pages in batches of 10k on that opportunity card, but is there an easier-to-grind method?

2. Which of the renown items are worth grinding for? I.e. which ones are best-in-slot - both excluding and including fate items?

  • 1. Using "the special books" is much cheaper. You'll pay roughly the same amount in Echo-value but gain 3 CP instead of 1.

    2. All of the level 40 Renown items are better than all other non-Profession items in their slots, except for the Criminals' One Who Pulls The Strings, which is tied for best Shadowy with the Fate-locked Laconic Prodigy. If you do not have Flute Street, you cannot get the Rubbery Men 40 item, but you can get an equal Persuasive bonus from the Docks' Unexploded Mine.

If you don't care about profit and haven't started on Plotting Against The Masters, the beginning card gives you an option to Inform the Constables about them, which removes the Connected: Revolutionaries quality from you altogether.
You also get a Constables favour and some Ragged Clothes as a reward!

Going from 40 renown to the max is actually quite a lot of turnins. Assuming you can reach 50, that's 16-17 turnins, which are +5 cp quirk each.

FYI - it seems that there is no actual max.

While 50 is the highest Renown you can get when Connected is auto-converted, there are reports of people pushing Renown higher with Favours. With best gear (and a mood), some base qualities can be high enough to allow Renown 52.

What ways are there to raise Hell favours?

I know of two opportunity cards, which never seem to want to show, and - after accidentally spending what I *did* have, because of a misclick and the game allowing you to click on options that do nothing for your character - I'm more in need than ever before my making waves goes down . . . the wiki just said "coming soon" when I clicked it :-/

Hell Faction card, Polite Invitation, An Afternoon of good deeds (option that raises Scandal) are the main sources of them as far as I know. Also, having Macaw as Connected Pet. You can also go to Polythreme and spy for Brass Embassy, but that is one hell of a grind ( pun totally intended).

If you have a Brass Embassy lodging there is an option on its card, too.

You only need to match your Notability to maintain it, thankfully - 1 Making Waves for 1 Notability, 15 Making Waves for 15 Notability.

According to my calculations, it takes at least 238 Favours to go from Renown 5 (after the Carnival) to Renown 40. That's if you make sure you succeed at all the attempts when they become difficult. Which should be possible with very high stats and many second chances.

Success/failure shouldn't change the number of Favors. My experience is that failing the stat check will lose you 1/5 of the material cost, but no Favors. But who knows, that may vary by faction.

My Time the Healer is late; it arrived almost a full day after its usual time last week (over 22 hours), and it looks set to repeat that performance this week.

Time the Healer is always at least a week after your previous one. So if the last one was late by some time, then that moves your expected time up by that much. It's never going to go "back" to an earlier time, I think.

    Damn.

Thanks for letting me know. Can anyone PM the other ending please?

Is the nocturnal visitor to the cellar quality linked to the fate locked The Gift storylet? The value is as high as it goes but the story doesnn't seem to move on.

Thanks again! I haven't paid for The Gift yet (I think that will be for next month) so please no spoilers yet! I would be grateful though for the alternate SFiG ending. I didn't want to jeopardise my friendship and though foolishly that I could get it back!

It's impressive how the writing makes you care so much about NPCs! The Regretful Soldier's tale alone made me pay out for the spirit trade!

Is there something wrong with the server? My action candle isn't working so I don't know when I run out of actions till I can't click. I also can't seem to mouse over anything anymore.

The timers are very buggy. I'm sure that I read somewhere that Failbetter had enough bug reports sometime ago but, so far, nothing has been fixed.

I'm also getting a lot more blank screens and other errors. But I don't know enough about these things to know how easy it will be to fix.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

Yes, Thieves Cache is more profitable and even more if you finished fate locked Soul Trade story.

Pretty sure this is false. A bit surprised that you maintain this position given you were part of the thread where we discussed all the various factors involved. It is a difficult question and it's misleading to assert that one strategy is better without all sorts of caveats.

From that thread, caveats aside, in general Deep Blue Heaven is better. Thieve's Cache is in general better for spirifers. However, in both cases the difference between the two strategies is fairly marginal. Also spirifers have lost some profitability post-Renown conversion.

Having done the math myself, thief's cache is much better. If you only look at the treasure rewards, then Deep Blue Heaven will give a better reward even accounting for the large increase in actions, but the "free" ~9 echoes you always get from the thief's cache tips the balance significantly.

All I've seen from you on this is this post and it's hardly empirical evidence. All I am saying is that this specific thread is for general short queries. Making definitive statements in this thread about unsettled questions of complicated optimisation without explicit evidence is misleading and unfair to new and casual users who rely on this thread.
