Have You Ever Gained UNACCOUNTABLY PECKISH w/o Warning or Consent!

I drew an opportunity card related to Devils, I think it had something to do with the Affectionate Devil, and since I've been enjoying the romantic sort of opportunity cards that he and the Quiet Deviless are associated with I did it. IT GAVE ME UNACCOUNTABLY PECKISH WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT!

Soon I was getting BLACK BORDERED NON-DISCARDABLE OPPORTUNITIES, and if I was a player who didn't metagame at all I'd have no friggin idea why or what they mean. One such card was about a messenger sent by Mr. Irons talking about how he knows I'm pursuing a name, BUT MY CHARACTER IS NOT; WITHIN A ROLEPLAYING CONTEXT THIS MAKES NO SENSE.

SUCH A NEGATIVE STATUS EFFECT SHOULDN'T BE GIVEN SO RANDOMLY!

Here's a link to the opportunity that randomly gave me Unaccountably Peckish.

Unnecessary snark deleted.

But seriously; they're devils. They do these things.

You can get rid of it with the relatively harmless (and cheap) Ace of Hunger card. Plus, next time, you'll simply refuse their invitation and all shall be well.

It's very easy to get rid of. Happens all the time to me.

Cavorting with devils involves an element of risk. Yeah, crazy, I know. Who would have guessed? Perhaps you should stay away from devils, and avoid risky things altogether if they're going keep freaking you out like this. Everything seems to bother you to an alert level of ALL CAPS! smile

But seriously, it is trivially easy to be rid of it. I wouldn't fret too much if I were you.

Bad things tend to happen when you mess around with devils.

Your game is not "effed up". You can easily remove Unaccountably Peckish by purchasing a snack in the Labyrinth of Tigers or simply getting chestnuts from the ACE OF HUNGERS card that appears once you have 1 Unaccountably Peckish. And Seeking doesn't actually have any negative consequences until after you click "yes" in a storylet that tells you in no uncertain terms that there will be dire consequences for continuing down the path.

You'll be fine. It's hardly worth all-caps ranting about.

SPOILERS ABOUT DEVILS

According to all the spoilers I read on TV Tropes DEVILS are DISGUSTED BY Seekers of the Name! They won't even buy the Soul of one. So why the HECK would hanging out with Devils cause me to start Seeking MR. Eatens NAme?

Being Unaccountably Peckish doesn't mean you're Seeking. It's just a path that can potentially lead there if you give in and eat your own teeth or something dreadful like that.

Devils aren't even disgusted by Seekers themselves. They're only disgusted by stained souls, which becomes necessary at a certain point of Seeking, but persists even if you quit.

Too true. Why, when SMEN was still on hiatus for a few years, one can still get Peckish. Being too peculiarly hedonistic will earn you CPs, for example.

If you want to know more about that, try this (old, I know).

Also, a list of possible Peckish gains if you want to be warned.

I answered yes to the poll because a while back, not long after seeking was reinstated, time the healer accidentally gave everyone 1 cp of UP.

There is an improv phrase I like: "Make it your character's problem." Just as you didn't know about the consequences of your action, neither did your character. There is no way he could have known. And now he feels an Unaccountable Hunger. He's getting cards from Mr Irons saying he's pursuing a Name, when he isn't. How is he going to respond to that? If it's something he doesn't want, how is he going to fix it? This is an opportunity to discover something about your character that you don't know. Namely, how he responds to unexpected adversity.

It's one of the reasons that roleplaying within a game is more fun than writing fiction where you control every outcome.

I find that part of the fun of the game is that I don't know the consequences of all of my actions. If all of those consequences were a net positive, and if I received a warning about every bad thing that might happen on every storylet, it wouldn't be much of a choice, it wouldn't be much fun and it wouldn't be much of a game.

I remember gaining that random 1 point of UP with my characters and dealing with it easily with the Ace of Hungers. Recently, though, I was coming back from a seven-months hiatus and I discovered that one of my profiles randomly had 9 UP. (From where? No idea.)

(I decided to use the opportunity to opt out of seeking and a misclick costed me dearly; so, yes, UP alone can be quite a hit when it's high.)

I'm still healing my character from all the menaces the misclick caused, but I'm more genuinely curious as to how Derek got so much UP in my absence (probably a bug, I guess) than annoyed. 1 point of UP is easy to clear, so I don't mind getting it from unexpected places. I miss those thrills of clicking something and suddenly having to deal with more than you bargained for - I miss this from when I was just a newbie screwing with things right and left, because it made my victories sweeter.

  • Time, the Healer now gives 1 level of Unaccountably Peckish if you already have a point. If your character had any Peckish before Seeking's hiatus, that would be where it came from. As someone mentioned upstream, there was also a brief bug where many people got a point of UP for no reason, which would also have caused it if they had none beforehand.

  • He was clear before I went in hiatus (I wasn't doing anything special, just grinding for Christmas, then real life called and I gradually stopped playing). If Derek had a point of UP by then, he wouldn't be just 9, he would be around 30 after all those weeks. I was active when Seeking returned and the bug first ocurred, as I said in the post, and cleared both my profiles from it. Unless the bug returned 2 months (8 weeks) ago, there's no reason for him to have any UP.

Is there anyne who got UP randomly around May, 2017, here? It would close the mystery. xD

There's also a path to Seeking which doesn't impose or require Unaccountably Peckish, through Recurring Dreams: Death by Water.

As some have said - there was a bug a while back which gave many a point of UP (which then increased every week).

Contact FBG support. They cleared UP on request from the accounts which were effected.
