Making time(zone)-sensitive social actions in an Event free to play could be a start. If you have no actions and an invite is pending, you might tab away to do other things, then forget about it. Your friend is then asleep or working.
Perhaps! FL could start using the opt-in Notifications scripts in most browsers, to ding players when specific social actions have come in.

I wonder what will happen with the one of my characters who was locked at "preparing for debate" 4 for the entire election. (4=cannot cancel). Will that debate conclude fiercely next year?

I'm still able to accept pending debate invites. There's a few Fixer menace offers too, and if a player is free their name is still int he list. Milk it while we can. Perhaps any winnings from leftover debates roll over to next year? Not sure on that point.

I believe my Convincing Rhetoric, etc, carried over from last year. There's a chance those resources will linger again if you don't want to, or miss out on, trading them in for Candles and such.

Someone invited me to a debate, then left London. Someone else invited me in the meantime, I accepted, and they disappeared. Now I'm stuck in a debate with someone who doesn't seem to intend to continue it, with another pending invite ready to be accepted as soon as I somehow get out of the first one.
I'm honestly kind of interested in just waiting and then having a random debate at like Hallowmas or whatever, completely out of the blue. That would certainly be entertaining from a roleplaying perspective. (Especially since both our candidates lost.)

The option to cash in surplus donations went away quickly after the election.
