Anyone had a go at (failing at) robbing the Brass Embassy since the conversion? It used to wipe your Connected: Hell and send you directly to jail, but what happens now?

Presumably you'd lose any favors you had.

I've been trying to check on an alt but I keep accidentally succeeding :X

I know you don't gain a criminal record, you lose all favors, and your renown doesn't go up. I tested on a character with 0 renown before.

I did it on two characters with renown 50. They both kept that renown.

I had literally been waiting for this for months. I had a ridiculously large amount of Connected: Hell, and failing the Brass Embassy theft is the only way to get into New Newgate (after the first time, anyway) without increasing your Criminal Record.

Speaking of which, for the love of God Failbetter, please add some extremely difficult but not Fate-locked way to lower that Record, or at least a more reasonable way to get into the prison. It is ridiculous. Add some option to bribe Constables with 7 Favours to lower it by one change point, or to get into the prison without a stain on your record. Hell, even spending Connected: The Masters on this would be more acceptable than nothing. Multiple storylines require you to get into the prison, and that should not be punished permanently. Even Weeping Scars are more erasable than this!

Weeping scars can be removed? I know that stains can be cleared, with fate, but thought wounds and memories of chains were untouchable.

I’ve seen the option. I can give you a hint as to where if you want.

  • I’d heard that Stains can be cleansed too, and I think I know where, but I wasn’t sure enough to mention it. I imagine Memories of Chains can also be removed somewhere, but I’ve never heard of any such option actually existing. Here’s an interesting question: is it possible to complete SMEN all the way up to the Gate, get the Knock, and eventually be none the worse for wear? Can you avoid or heal literally all of the damage?

I’m not going to try that, if only because I don’t feel like going through that pain and causing immense suffering to others. Oh, and it would utterly annihilate all of my item stockpiles. That is a particularly brutal and ingenious touch to the whole thing. Even character destruction doesn’t feel as painful as that, somehow.

As far as I know, you can't remove Memories of Chains, except through a specific exit from SMEN, and not the one that grants the Knock. Once you're Embarked, you can't repeat the storyline, so presently I don't believe it's possible to heal all the damage *and* get the Knock.

That said, it would make sense if you could eventually remove them in Parabola, and that Glassman option's been lying dormant for a while now...

Scars can be removed by the shapelings and Stains can be wiped clean with absolution, but there's no way whatsoever to remove Chains. All ways to exit SMEN go through A Bad End, which does not remove any of the three.

A certain Lady at Midnight will remove them.

...I was the one who recorded the result for that option and I could have sworn it was just a redirect to A Bad End. There's no way to tell though, now that the page was deleted and restored.

I mean, it would be confusing if it wasn't just a redirect these days, but it would also be the only way to ensure that option retained its old function as "the best way to quit".

I've checked the deleted history of the page and there's nothing much else there.

You've added the success results on January 6th. It looked as it does now (minus the trimmed text). No reference to A Bad End.

Your Renown is left untouched. So is your Connected, so if you are feeling sentimental you can still go for it!

    I've been NORTH.
I've held the idea of THE KNOCK in my mind, raised my hand to the frozen door, and then turned away with THE KNOCK in my hand.

I know the place that I can be absolved and healed, to remove the scars from my flesh, and the stains from my soul.

There is, as of yet, no way to take the chains from my mind.

I like them though, I'd not cure them even if I could. It feels like the PTSD that I fight in the real world each day.

As for other harm... Due to using some holiday content, I am content with what I've lost. Sure, there's two possible people I could have married that won't talk to me anymore, but I could have avoided THAT too, if I'd wanted.

So, there is a path, but it is as fine as the eye of a needle.

Oh, and there's even an argument that one of the biggest costs (resetting connections and renown) is actually beneficial if you are trying to get all quirks to 15.

Course, the amount of fate required... still, might do it, as a holiday gift to myself, as I do something each year.

Are there any qualities besides Memories of Chains and the progress indicators of SMEN that can't be erased after taking the Knock? Maybe someday this can be one of the most insane accomplishments bored endgame players can tackle: getting the Knock without consequences.

This would definitely not be in the spirit of SMEN, though, so I understand if that is intentionally never made possible.

it was horrific, destructive, expensive, and quite all encompassing.

But, yes, if you are very, VERY careful, and spend the better part of $50 in fate, you can prevent anything permanent from being done, other then the chains.

It'll be multiple years for me to recover everything I lost, but not quite as many years as I was already playing... almost, but not quite...
