lately i have been dipping my toes into fate locked content starting with flute street (very interesting lore but a little bit disappointing) and intending to try and get my long lost soul back.
but ive been wondering would the soul trade story be worth pursing for a person of some importance like my self? i ask because its meant for much lower shadowy characters than mine and i get the feeling that the gains from it will reflect that.
however if it gives me means to acquire large amounts of souls then ill be interested since im using a lot of them at the moment.

Is anything in this game worth anything besides bragging rights? Hesperidean Cider may instantly cure all wounds and unlock some profitable cards, but all it really means is you've spent a great deal of time and effort on a game to change some pixels. All goals in Fallen London are essentially self-imposed, and reward nothing more than personal satisfaction and the attention of others (aka bragging rights).

Scarlet Saint has no gameplay effect, correct. In this game personal interest does tend to be more important though. Plenty of players have reached Courier's Footprint for example just for that cool title.

For mechanical rewards, Shepherd is the only one worthwhile these days, as the spirifage echo grind is far outclassed by expeditions and tiger grind. Though I'm still not convinced being a Shepherd is actually profitable enough to bother with.

It's a choice between 15 magnanimous and 15 heartless.

The Menace wipe is a bulk wipe, but it works well with Favours, as most sources from faction cards have an associated Menace increase. I usually just hold onto a Shepherd card in my hand if the need ever arises. As for easily repeatable London-based grinds, expeditions to the Tomb of the Silken Thread using Strong-Backed Labour is still the best, but the profitable Airs change is a good point. Personally, I'm still inclined towards the Widow, as I like raising connections with her, but there are advantages to both.

There are better grinds, but spirifage is still one of the better (best?) easily repeatable London-based grinds, and it does augment the value of a few other things like Thieve's Expeditions (on the soul reward branch) and One Stone in a Thousand when dumping criminal favours. But I find the main benefit is that it gives me a profitable way to change the Airs of London (when practicing spifirage in the Spite). I'm not sure if there is a more profitable option to do so, but I find myself having to seek out particular Airs as I work towards Paramount Presence for inviting Crooked Crosses to Salon, during Feast of the Rose to elicit the Fountain option on each Feast card to maximize echos, and occasionally to lower suspicion in Spite. I probably would have found wiping menaces useful earlier in the game, but at this point I tend to keep my menaces fairly fixed (scandal 2 for certain flash lay reasons, nightmares up for Nadir, etc.) and would find bulk wipes (assuming that is how shepherd works -- haven't tried it) more annoying than not.

Becoming a spirifer gets you the best base grind in the game currently (as trading in souls for brass is very very profitable), whereas the Shepard option lets you eradicate all your menaces.

If you like to gain lots of money and don't mind stealing souls it's a good option.

The Shepard option will also let you build up a rapport with members of Society, which can come in very handy if you have a salon.

The Shepherd card does have some uses. I used it to get to Scarlet Saint faster and a friend of mine used it to hit Courier's Footprint with only one Mood.

Unless there's now a way to convert echoes to USD or somesuch, I'm pretty sure money is still just for personal satisfaction and bragging rights :P
That literally is all there is to it. Its card has an action to exchange 1000 deep amber for a trembling amber
You are right. It is 2.15. That's the number I first got but then must have mistyped and got 2.5 (was doing on my phone so was hard to double check)

And yes it would probably be more efficient to exchange all favours in one go. But 1) I was simply going off xKiv's strategy and seeing what gain a Boneless Consort would add, and 2) it means that you can't dedicate yourself to this grind. If you already have 7 favours and Slime and Amber is simply not coming up you have to pause this grind and potentially do something less profitable. Whereas with Boneless Consort you can accrue deep amber until it does come up

That's true.

So you basically have a grind of 2.147 EPA, and whenever you do draw the Slime and Amber card, that particular cycle or two will have the better EPA of 2.481.

However, that too isn't fully accurate. It's true that you can accumulate Amber waiting for the Rubbery Spouse card, but it is an Infrequent card, so realistically, you won't be able to convert the Deep Amber into Trembling Amber at the rate you grind it (unless, as you mention, you stop the grind waiting for the one card which raises the profitability).

if my math is right, then without the occasional Rubbery Spouse card, this grind provides ~2.073 EPA when Calling in Favours, and ~2.476 EPA when accepting a gift for 7 Favours.

Either way this is not bad at all. Of course, who knows how this will behave once Constables are converted to Favours.

Now that favours and renown are fully implemented, anyone still digging being a Shepherd over a Spirifier? I did this as PoSI having completed many of the late game stories - how quick the storylet ended came as a surprise.
