Chrome extension: Conversion Helper Messages in this topic - RSS

I've created a small Chrome extension to make it slightly easier to keep track of item conversions, which was whitelisted on 6 April 2017. Details are below, after the download links:

The extension is available from the Chrome Web Store here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fallen-london-conversion/bajlcoahedhgjfpfgahdfaoeohmjbhfb
The Firefox Add-on is available from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fl-conversion-helper/
The source code is available from Github here: https://github.com/gallmarch/fl-conversion-helper

Basically, I've been doing a lot of side-conversions of Tier 3 items lately (grinding Making Waves), which requires a lot of scrolling through the inventory and keeping track of where I am in the conversion chain. I thought it would be nice if I could see my items arranged in the order of the chain, displayed in a way that would make it obvious whether I had enough of a particular item to convert. So I wrote a small Chrome extension to do this, and then expanded it to cover Tiers 1 and 2 as well. It looks like this:

The extension adds three new categories to the top of your Inventory in the 'Myself' tab: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. Within each of these categories, the items you have are arranged in the order of the 50→51 conversion chain (starting, arbitrarily, with Academic). If you're missing a kind of item, you'll see an empty slot. (In the image above, I don't have any Tier 3 Infernal or Rag Trade items, for example.) If you don't have enough of each item to perform a conversion, its icon is disabled (in this category only, of course, not in the main inventory). I more or less only ever do the large-quantity (slightly profitable) up-conversions (500→105), so you'll only be able to click if you have enough to perform one of those:

The extension is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible. It doesn't have any effect on the rest of your inventory. The three categories start out collapsed (like the categories in the Qualities section), but the extension will remember your preferences, so if you like to keep Tier 3 open all the time, you won't have to click to expand it every time you return to your inventory. If you would like to completely hide any (or all) of the tiers, there are options to do so in the extension's popup window:

Feedback and bug reports are very welcome. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 up-conversion quantities are a bit odd, and I can only test with the items in my inventory, so I may have missed something somewhere.

Version 0.2.6 is now available from the Chrome Web Store and is awaiting manual review by Mozilla. The update adds two new categories: one for Tier 4 items (since it's occasionally useful to up-convert these) and one for faction items that can be used to increase Connected/Renown. (The faction items are listed in the order their factions appear in the 'Contacts' section of the 'Myself' tab.)

dov wrote:

The faction items' icons are always enabled, whether or not you have the requisite Favours/stats/items for conversion. This limits the category's utility, but in order to fix this I'd have to make a few server calls and reproduce a fair amount of the game logic: technically feasible stuff, but enough to tip the extension over into what feels like 'FBG might nix it' territory. I'll contact them to ask, but don't hold your breath.

As a workaround in the meantime, the Item Search extension also works for qualities, so you can do a quick search for 'favours:' (including the colon) and it'll just show you a list of your faction Favours:

It means installing an extra extension, which isn't ideal, but it's what I do and it works OK.

I'm going to see if I can help to get Playing Favourites ported over to the redesign first, since that's a bit more immediately useful to more players; but after that, I'll absolutely look at Library, sure!

Very quick reply: I'm publishing version 2.0.4, which makes this compatible with the redesigned site. I've published it for Chrome and will do a Firefox release next. It should pop into existence on the Possessions tab once your extension updates (assuming that you haven't disabled it). Bug reports welcome!

Deploying software at Christmas is a futile act of self-destruction that will probably end with people's hair on fire, and thus entirely in-character for Fallen London. I have just published version 1.4 to the Chrome Web Store and Mozilla Add-Ons... thing, and it should gradually become available as they update.

Version 1.4 gives you a bit of control over whether items are enabled or disabled. You can choose whether 'Tier X' items are enabled for mass conversions, for small-quantity conversions, or always; and you can decide to keep faction items enabled all the time, should you wish.

As usual, it works for me on my machine, but testing the upgrade path is quite difficult and I might not have caught every corner case, so you might encounter problems when updating. A delete-and-reinstall should get things back to normal. Bug reports and feedback are extremely welcome, of course!

I've just published version 3.0.0, which updates the extension to work with yesterday's updates to the FL site. It's a bit of a quick and dirty fix, and I'll come back and tidy it up, but items should be displaying again.

Hey! It's working OK for me at the mo. Are you on Chrome? If so, please take a look at this thread: http://community.failbettergames.com/topic27376-psa-conversion-helper-and-goat-farmer-on-chrome.aspx

Basically, there's a bug in some versions of Chrome that breaks browser extensions. If the fix in the linked thread doesn't give you any joy, let me know and I'll escalate it to tier 2 support (tier 2 is also me, but involves me swearing at my computer a bit more).

Thanks for the heads-up. This is an issue I've been experiencing throughout porting to the redesign — I mentioned it as a known issue in the subreddit announcement but forgot to do so here; apologies for that. (I'm surprised you weren't experiencing it prior to the update a couple of days ago; that's interesting and may be informative.)

The bug relates to how the redesigned site distinguishes between taps and mouse clicks in order to show tooltips differently; programmatic clicks (which I'm using in FLCH) are handled as taps. As far as I can tell it's a bug with a third-party package; I've raised an issue on GitHub with the package's maintainer and will request that the FL dev team upgrade if/when it gets resolved (assuming it'd be painless to do so; obviously they are sufficiently busy that supporting browser extensions is not a high priority).

In the meantime there is probably a workaround I can implement, but it'll take some time and brainpower, both of which are (currently and chronically, respectively) limited. Apologies for the ongoing inconvenience — I am currently on Winking Isle but will be back in London soon and therefore strongly personally motivated to get it fixed. :-)

Yes, absolutely. I will probably have it default to 'invisible' in the popup menu, in the interests of unobtrusiveness. I'll have to play Fidgeting Writer all the way to the end to check the item IDs, something I've actually never done before (so this is a good excuse).

It'll be a few days before I can push out the update, though: I'm close to finishing a large refactoring as part of making the faction item icons more useful, so I will make sure all of that is working as intended before I add the category.

Finally, as I didn't want to keep bumping the thread to do so, so I'll take this opportunity to thank everyone for the positive feedback. I'm glad the extension is useful!

Sounds like a useful addition! I can't imagine that FBG would have a problem with this, so I'll push an update (with details) tomorrow, when I can physically bear to look at the FL interface again. (I've just finished two weeks of hardcore card-flipping and Notability grinding, so right now I want nothing more than to punch the Affectionate Devil right through my laptop screen and all the way into Parabola.)

I agree it's a great idea.

What I'd love to see is an inventory section which shows all Favours, just to see how many there are at a glance, instead of searching for them under the Contacts section.

A bit of news that's relevant for people who are currently using the extension: I've published an update to version 1.3.10. This update (a) adds the Fidgeting Writer category, as requested — hidden by default, as it's a bit of an Interface Spoiler, but visible on the dropdown menu — and (b) makes the faction items category a bit more useful by checking the rest of the 'Myself' tab to see whether you can convert Favours to Renown (i.e., enough Favours and/or modified attributes high enough). Item icons are greyed out with an explanation in the tooltip if you don't meet the requirements. I find it slightly less frustrating than the previous incarnation, and I hope you do too.

I ended up rewriting the extension almost from the ground up in order to make doing the latter easier, so there may be some weirdness when you upgrade. (The likeliest effect of this would be the extension simply failing to show up on the page.) If you have any problems, please uninstall and reinstall the extension (links are in the OP). If problems persist, then let me know — preferably by email to gallmarchindustries@gmail.com.

Apologies for the inconvenience!

Is there any way you could add a golden border to the items that grant MW?

Sorry for the delay in responding — real-world stuff got in the way. The Firefox version is sitting in a queue waiting for approval by Mozilla (currently #118), but in the meantime you can install it as a temporary add-on:

Temporary add-ons only stay installed until you restart Firefox, so you'll need to repeat the last steps (the ones in the mozilla.org link) each time you restart your browser. It's not terribly convenient, I know, but there isn't anything that developers can do about it.

First of all: thank you for all the work improving and adding features.

As for Favours: the item search extension is a good idea. But I was looking for a way which doesn't need lots of clicks (nor typing). So that one could see at a glance how many Favours there are of all types. I tried to do this myself, but sadly I have no experience in coding extensions...

A really dirty but probably trivial way to do it would be scrape the HTML displaying the favours from the Contacts section and use that to get the number of favours.

Thank you for the faction items update! That is wonderfully helpful! Keeping track of them all in different spots was such a nuisance. Thank you!

Thank you so much! I love this and use it all the time! If only it would work on the ipad version of Chrome! One suggestion for future versions - I can see how many favors I have for the deactivated renown items but the active one does not show this. I realize that for most this means there are 7 favors, but in the early renown levels it could be less. Anyway, thanks again!

That's weird. There should be a number at the bottom right of the faction item's icon that shows the number of Favours you have, whether or not you're able to convert them. In the screenshot below, for example, I've got 4 Favours: Constables (which I can convert) and 3 Favours: Criminals, which I can't. If what you're seeing is different, can you post a screenshot?

Thank you thank you thank you! This new version is beyond incredible! I must say, I was confused at first when I thought I had five Jewelled Reliquiaries, but I quickly realized the number is merely showing how many favours I have. And the fidgeting writer is also a nice touch.

Note to FBG: Hire this person to fix the mess that is your Story qualities tab :P

Absolutely essential extension, should be part of vanilla game, etc. I have only small bug report - on Firefox, the part of code counting favors for renown conversion isn't working. It always shows "you have 0 favors, need 3", so it never enables the items (thus I am even more glad that now, we can enable them, always).

Tested on version 52.5.2 (64 bity) (ESR).

//Edit

I really, really hope that version for Pale Moon or Basilisk Browser (FOSS, based on modified Gecko engine, extension engine available) will happen at some point, cause after the fiasco-fail firefox v 57 (aka "let's break 99% of addons for sheer fun of it") come out for all, we *will* be having many people migrating.

You're absolutely right — Chrome 76 made some under-the-hood changes. Thanks for the heads-up! I've just published version 3.0.5 to the Chrome Web Store, which seems to fix things. I'll keep an eye on it, though.

I'll publish a similar update for Goat Farmer ASAHP.
