I miss my appreciation society (the Indolent Iconodules). Yes, sometimes they were rowdy, sometimes they dragged me into slanging matches with rival authors that I'd have been much better staying out of, but on the whole they were far cheerier company than a pot of ink.

What's the best way to grind searing enigmas to make the impossible theorem? As is often the case, this depends on your definition of "best".
- The cheapest option (in terms of materials and actions) is probably via the Nadir, where two cards can provide an Enigma (one of them easily; one with a very hard challenge). This is probably also the slowest method, as it's both time-limited and luck based.
- You can do Heists - there's much speculation now as to what's the actual rate of the rare success which gives Enigmas. It's probably the most profitable of the options.
- If you have the materials and don't mind trusting a bit in the RNG, the Fidgeting Writer is also an option. You have a roughly 5.14% chance of converting a Tale of Terror into a Searing Enigma, so on average you'll need ~20 Tales of Terror per Enigma (plus other conversion items).
- If you have lots of Mystery items stockpiled (especially Uncanny Incunabulum), you can directly manufacture the Enigmas at the University. This is probably the fastest way if you have the materials (though also the most expensive).

To become a Scholar of corespondance you need to get Set of Correspondence Stones for the first time and to get them you need to do the expedition Tomb of the seven for the first time? Im correct? edited by Tofan Bogdan on 2/21/2017

You've slain a Worryingly Large Rat
Arriving in Watchmaker's Hill, you found work at the Department of Menace Eradication. Your first contract was to hunt a Worryingly Large Rat. This is the first and earliest tier. It will place you near the beginning of the Dangerous content, where you will investigate an infestation of sorrow-spiders."
My character has done neither of these things to my knowledge. So whatever I pick it is going to skip some content. There doesn't seem any way to escape this. It's very annoying. I'm actually thinking of just dumping this character and starting another one now. Advice? I, meaning this character, can still take the Worryingly Large Rat contract from the Department. And I'm waaaay beyond this stuff for ages now - so I assume it's pretty safe to say you shouldn't be missing out on anything by taking this level, as you should also still be able to go rat-hunting then (it just requires Name Scrawled In Blood 1, so... ).

I would not get kicked out of court quite yet. As of now, there's no way to get back, and if you're still not a POSI, losing access to it loses some useful grinds. You might as well work to progress one of the other stats so you can use it for POSI. What you chose at this point doesn't actually matter. Actually, you don't get kicked out of the shuttered palace, just court. I'm not sure what that does to heart's desire, although I assume it's set up so you're not locked out. edited by Pumpkinhead on 2/24/2017

That doesn't sound right. In order to progress Heart's Desire I need to perform the Topsy King's opera. And performing an opera (ANY opera) will get me banned. I'd rather it be one and the same opera. Anyway, my question was about how long it'll take me to return to London after the Foreign Service storyline.
If you perform the opera and get banned, you are sent straight to the tomb colonies, once you get back you are given the options to pursue foreign service, but you don't have to.

I'm torn, in part because I haven't been saving up my Authorial income, and Stolen Kisses will become harder to get ahold of and in part because, as a Companion collector, I'd be sad to lose my Appreciation Society. On the other hand, being a Correspondent is overall more lucrative and provides a greater stat-boosting item (the Violant Ink). I think they're about even for RP reasons.
Well, there are other ways to get Stolen Kisses - albeit less good. Besides, the Feast of the Rose was particularly generous with them. I still have plenty to spare despite being an Agent.
As a companion collector myself, I gave up on job-related companions: like the connected pets, you can't get all of them anyway.
I'd switch to Correspondent if I were you, but, obviously, the final choice is up to you.
