This is such a sudden and huge obstacle in trying to progress my ambition. I saw on the wiki that it can be gifted by other players, so does anyone have either tips to getting them; or even better, if some higher level player has some left over?

By far the fastest way to get them is to turn in your Masters connection. You can get that reasonably easily from holiday events (you may have gotten some during christmas if you were playing around then).

I found Favors: Criminals and Inklings of Identity to be rather cost-effective. The favors can be picked up at the Carnival Sideshows, or through the opportunity cards "The Mayor of London" (Intrigue against the mayor), "An evening's zailing" (Join the pirates), and "The Alleys of London: The Criminals" (Provide an alibi). Inklings of Identity proved a bit harder, but I was able to acquire and convert a nice supply of Proscribed Material from the Life of the Mind storylet in the Empress's Court, specifically "Discuss politics at a salon".

The Museum robbery gets the most coins, has the best story and takes relatively little in way of resources. When I was at that point, I made a pact with a fellow HD'er and we sent each other on, and then traded. Because you can't steal them for yourself, but nobody said you can't steal them for someone else, and they steal for you! Yes, it's a wasted action, but it was worth it for the RP value.
I have a few laying around, so I can send some to those in need to further HD. When I was starting, a veteran player helped me too (thank you, Grenem!). And I don't mind sneaking into the Museum again either - feel free to send a request.
