I was wondering what all the ways were to get into newgate prison, what their conditions were and what penalties come with them. I recently got to 40 renown with the criminals faction and would like to get the corresponding item associated with it; however I want to avoid raising my criminal record getting into newgate or waste my 450+ connected hell if it is somehow possible.

You could of course wait for the Hell conversion to the Renown system, at which point failing to rob the Embassy would only wipe your Favours.

Vake hunters also have to go to prison as part of their ambition. You have to beat up some guy in the shuttered palace in order to get thrown in there, if I remember correctly.

Not quite, unfortunately. Beating up the random functionary is provided as a quick way to gain suspicion, but it just sends you to prison as normal.

Nope, it is just the embassy(the normal heists also just give you alot of suspicion IIRC but I know you won't avoid a criminal record with them).
On the other hand, unless you are collecting money for an Overgoat or cider or want to have the torment destiny in real life by trying to keep 15 notability a criminal record is not so bad.

Just be careful not to let your criminal record get too high (level 5 - A Hardened Recidivist), or you may have trouble using the Instant Ablution Absolution. I'm not sure if having a criminal record that high actually prevents you from using the Absolution or simply makes it less effective, but I for one would rather not find out the hard way.

Also, something that might be good to know: My alt isn't at level 5 as I assumed. She's currently at level 4 (plus the one cp she just got when I got her imprisoned again for science). Here's what the quality description says:
A Criminal Record: A Determined Delinquent - Ablution Absolution will no longer reduce your suspicion
So, ten arrests total until Ablution Absolution stops working.
