Today marks the beginning of The Feast of the Exceptional Rose! It is a season of love and heartbreak, passion and secrets! It is the season of wooing and gift-giving!

Along with the ability to divorce, the year 1895 brings back the freedom to marry as well! The tax has been lifted! As well as this delightful news, you may now take your spouse on a special evening out!

LOVE GIFTS

Send and receive gifts from other players!

Rewards from the Feast can be won by increasing your Masquing, through participating in the revels and the exchange of gifts. Use your Masquing quality to unlock special companions, only available during this festival!

Make friends for the exchange of gifts on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit or right here in this thread. Please feel free to use #ExceptionalFeast on other channels to alert other players.

MARRIAGE AND KEEPING THE FIRE ALIVE

Now that the marriage tax has lifted, you’re free to court your partner all the way to the altar! Begin at the Attend to Matters of the Heart storylet to work your way up to a full-blown proposal! There are a multitude of exceptionally lovely venues throughout London for you and your partner to explore.

This year, special evenings out are now available to married couples. Choose a lively, elegant, or ecstatic assignation to impress your heart’s desire. Begin planning with Attend to Matters of the Heart, available year-round from your Lodgings.

END YOUR INCONVENIENT ENTANGLEMENTS!

Has your spouse been too long gone? Are you too distressed by their unaccountable peckishness? Has love simply faded? The divorce courts will hear your plight; and, if they are satisfied, will end your marriage, so that you may seek out new love stories.

If you wish to divorce your partner, look for the option to seek a divorce on the Attend to Matters of the Heart card in your Lodgings.

SKIN-BOUND MEMORIES!

Clathermont's Tattoo Parlour! The place to come for inked proof of eternal love!

A unique story involving the Neath’s famed tattooists, the Clathermont Family is available for the duration of the Feast.

Find the Clathermonts in Ladybones Road when you have A Name in Seven Secret Alphabets at 4 or higher. As part of the Feast, continue this story from the same area by playing News at Clathermont’s from 13th February.

THE LADY IN LILAC

She examines you carefully. Her eyes swim with glints like violet wine...

The enigmatic Lady in Lilac returns to London during the Feast of the Exceptional Rose.

On the 13th February we will be releasing the Lady in Lilac card into your opportunity deck, allowing you to trade in your gifts for Masquing. From the 13th, you’ll also be able to turn in your Masquing for special companions on the Encounters at the Feast card.

The Feast will end on the 20th February. The Lady in Lilac and Encounters at the Feast will remain available until the 24th, after which your remaining Masquing will be converted to Making Waves when Time, the Healer visits.

A WELL-FINISHED ROSE

For those of you who played The Empress' Shadow and taught at Sinning Jenny's Finishing School, checking in on your students during this festival will reveal a little something extra.

Last May or so, there was a rather strange bug for a few hours, where all cards with lock conditions - but no unlock conditions - were available to all players. The initial Secular Missionary card only locks with Intimate with a Secular Missionary, so for those few hours the card could appear for everyone. (The initial Firebrand card locks with his Intimate quality, but it also unlocks with C: Revolutionaries 5, so it was not affected.)

That first Secular Missionary card of course sets Intimate with a Secular Missionary to 1, so in that brief period of bugginess her story was reset for me. Fortunately the card linking her with the Firebrand is unlocked with sufficient progress with the Missionary rather than the Firebrand, and the option doesn't require exactly 10 for his quality. Thus I was able to reset the Firebrand's quality as well, repeat the Nadir expedition, and choose the Missionary this time around.

A pity I wasn't able to do all this before the bug was fixed, or I could have restarted the story again to get a second Missionary and see if that patch event for the 30 Missionaries is still around.

Hello - a question about marriage - My character's betrothed just took over the wedding planning and I got this message:

<character name> has taken over the wedding arrangements. You can rest now. Nightmares is dropping... You've lost 104 x Organising a Wedding (new total 0).

Is this the way this is supposed to work? It seems kind of strange to lose progress like that!

Also, do we need to have the wedding before the end of the Feast? We were hoping to role play it for a while. Thanks!

1) that's because your fiance has gained the equivalent amount of wedding planning. Not to worry!

2) previously weddings were available year around with no festivals associated with them. Haven't heard a change otherwise.

I usually consider a week a reasonable window. If they don't accept in a week, I don't feel rude about withdrawing. I'd say that you waiting a full year is polite beyond anyone's wildest dreams of propriety. Withdrawing now is not impolite in the least, in my humble opinion.
You have been accommodating to a fault, and should feel no guilt whatsoever.
But maybe others will have differing opinions, as I have been accused of being rather brusque in the past.

Oh boy, for one of my characters, I just slipped in under the wire! I only got 3 encounter cards all week, but I stockpiled gifts, and I just managed to get one of each of the 10 non-fate companions with 3 gifts to spare! I wanted to save one of each, but decided that I wanted the companions more. This was my first feast--it was fun! I loved all the art and text for the companions--very cool!

Whenever I try the trick with non-Fate items now, though, the gift disappears completely.

This only ever worked with Fate gifts.

Update: FBG have responded that this was indeed a mistake - the Ushabti should be exchanged for 1 x Masquing, not 2.

Woe is me, for I cannot choose a tattoo!

In particular, I cannot make up my mind whether I should pick something that fits my character by stats (which would be Bizarre, both because my character is quite bizarre but also because it's otherwise the hardest of the BDR to raise IIRC) or something which fits by theme (in which case, no tattoo would be best, but then again Respectable is literally everywhere and seems by far the easiest to accumulate)...

I'm not expecting anyone to provide me with an earth-shattering epiphany, I just wanted to put my frustrations out somewhere people who don't care can read them.

People say rats via rat-catcher professions, but I'm working on a sheet that would take every possible actions into account (AP, req, extra req, bonus materials) converted into E or AP for an easy measurement of efficiency, but also per AP to measure speed of progress.

For the moment, I can tell you that if you draw cards in Flit you may already have a lot of "free" progress.

Confused about ushabti.

In inventory, they're called Antediluvian Ushabti. When trading to the Lady in Lilac, they're called PRESUMPTIVE Ushabti.

Which is it?

To clarify:

The way it worked (at least until now) is:

If you send someone a Fate gift and then cancel, you do *not* get the item.

If you send someone a Fate gift and *they decline*, then you get the Fate gift yourself. This apparently doesn't work, though, with just the new Fate item (Heartwood Hearse).

If anyone knows differently, please correct me.

Now as for gift trading, due to a series of events best not spoken of I find myself currently swamped in loose teeth. Having finally emerged from the Stygian -- or perhaps Lethean, given how d__nably little I can remember of it -- depths of the Zee and its clammy embrace, I find myself inundated with the prattling of heartsick ninnies and (I suspect) honeydrunk fools wearing masks. Ah, I beg your pardon -- masques. The vernacular, as it were, eludes me, a quality I intend to jealously cling to!

Nevertheless, I've met with a singular princess during the revelry, and I've an inkling that yet further networks might be established, salacious or otherwise. I'd be eternally (ugh) grateful if one were to extend a charitable hand in this regard, and I'd do my best to see their generosity repaid. If only to square away that pernicious little debt, I suppose. Anyway, should you deign to arrange a gift be sent my way, send it to: Sachikoma EX.

I believe the Quiet Deviless is available for the same amount of Fate year-round if you have a Guest Room at the Brass Embassy. So no need to freak out if you're currently short of cash but may have some later.

I'm fairly sure that's how I got mine. I know it wasn't at the Feast of the Rose, as I have never participated in it before.

Anyone want to marry me in an event of the year? I'm afraid I can't be bothered to put any energy in planning, or in anything at all, really. In fact, if you do marry me, I will run off with the
+2 notability gained from being the event of the year and scare off the Amanuensis to gain no candle. Then I'll run off to the Avid Horizon. Maybe if I'm feeling philanthropic I'll divorce you first. If you pay for it.
Is this how one finds love?
(I'm not serious (well, I'm serious that that's what I would do if someone did marry me, but I'm not seriously looking for someone), but if there is anyone out there that would actually like to throw a ton of effort at a seeker, Amanda Albright is here for you...)

I was so set to grind some masques and win my quiet deviless as a companion -only to find out that without money, I'm stuck at 30 :/ Why did the kickstarter have to be now?

I'm really keen to get my hands on the quiet deviless -so if anyone feels like throwing some Fate-locked content at Pavonisa, I'd be incredibly grateful. And willing to spend however many free evenings I have on anything you might need wink

Ways to get the Quiet Deviless as a Companion:
    • Via the Encounter at the Feast card. Costs 100 Masquing (at least 70 of these need to come from Fate).
    • Via the Brass Embassy lodgings card. Costs 40 Fate, and a Portfolio of Souls. Requires upgrading the Embassy lodgings to a Sanctum (cheaper during Christmas if you're soulless, but the expensive option can be done by anyone all year).
    • Via the Loquacious Vicar storyline. Costs 50 Fate. This is easily missed, since usually people play this storyline very early on.
All of these options require An Intimate of Devils 10.

Similar options exist for acquiring the Green-Eyed Devil as a companion, for the same Fate/Masquing costs (though he only requires An Intimate of Devils for the Feast option).

A note to Seekers: if you have a stained soul (which blocks the Intimate of Devils cards) and still want to get the Deviless: The Feast has two special rare successes which will let you raise An Intimate of Devils. Once you raise it to 2 you'll start drawing the regular Intimate of Devils cards and raise it to 10. After acquiring the Deviless/Devil, you can drop this quality back to 0 to avoid the cards.

    Depending on why you're asking:

You can always set up an alt account - or use a current alt account - to send your main account fate-locked items. I screwed up last year, as well as disliked the stress of trying to navigate socially with other players and trusting others with real-life cash, so this year I avoided all of that by using my alt to send everything to my main (I missed out on a few items by choosing two 130 packages, instead of the 280 package, but live and learn, lol). Essentially, that way, you won't need to cancel anything, as you're just sending to yourself smile

That is...that is pretty brilliant actually. (Actually, I just got on the wrong profile and looked at the correspondence tattoo, which was really brilliant because the sigil was DARE, this was expected anyways).

Either way, I couldn't wait, and I forgot about the existence of the invisible tattoo(didn't even know about it since the wiki was pretty good at hiding it) so even if it was a unique tattoo I would have been too much of a fool.

I am willing to reciprocate all gifts sent to me with equal gifts in kind, though I sadly have no Fate to give Fate-locked items. If anyone does wish to send fate-locked items, I thank you, and I will send you anything in response that I can. To none-fate senders, I will send in response what I am given, if I do not have the materials for it, then I will after a day or two.

Well I daresay this has been a prosperous 24 hours of trading thus far. I've now obtained almost all of the non-fate gifts and reciprocated, bar the Decanter of Lachrymose Chartreuse and the Pink-Painted Cat, both of which I am very eager to get my hands on.

I'm also absolutely down to trade for all those juicy fate locked items and can reciprocate in kind. Please feel free to PM me here or send a message in Fallen London itself if you'd like to set a trade up. I'm well stocked on fate for the occasion.

This is very good info. Possibly, FBG have changed it for this year - in the past, withdrawing a Fate gift definitely did not return it.

To manage my money better, I'm viewing the festival encounters in advance on the wikia. I'm curious about those identities: I've seen the Cheery Man, the Last Constable, Soap and Sophia, Mrs Plenty, and several familiar faces from Sunless Sea. But who is the Neurasthenic Assassin? The Canny Costermonger? The Profoundly Educated Gentleman? And is the Ghostly Presence a fidgeting writer? Is he one of the heroes in the Irish songs of the Sardonic Music-hall Singer?

  • The flavor text mentions that they haunt a room where you keep a third city relic, which may mean, well, nothing, but could suggest the fidgeting writer, indeed--especially since the text also says they've been reading your books. I'd call it circumstantial evidence, but lore has been built on more gossamer stuff.

    Good evening fellow Neathdwellers!

I've been playing FL for a while but haven't really gotten around to dabbling in the more social side of things as yet.

However as I'm somewhat of a collector of London's esoterica, my first Feast of the Exceptional Rose seems a most appropriate time to immerse myself in the community.

I am absolutely game to trade for both non-fate and fate items. By the end of the feast I hope to have acquired both treasures and new associates.

Please do not hesitate to contact me!

    Sincerely, H. Glamore.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

20, and then you can use the item exchanges to boost it to 30, anything beyond that is fate-locked.

Quick question: I have two painted cats. If, when the Lady in Lilac comes around I would like to keep one, is it possible to surrender only one of the cats and retain the other?

Can someone help me out here? I'm trying to use the Exceptional Rose card and it seems to be eating the card, chaning my Airs and... that's it. I'm doing this on the app. Am I missing how this is supposed to work? Anyone else seeing this?

Edit: I'm thinking this is a bug. It doesn't work on the app but it does seem to work on the browser. Anyone else seeing this?

Yes, you'll be fine. Rose gifts are given up one by one.

I wasn't planning to participate in this (looking down the list it doesn't seem to me that any of the companions within my reach are worth the trouble) but some of my contacts have already started sending me (non-fate) gifts. I don't really have the resources to reciprocate, but I don't want to tick people off. I'm in a bit of a bind. What happens if I decline the gift? Will they get it back? What's the best course, here? Am I going to have to write to all my contacts individually asking them not to send things?

That aside, I am open for trading:

    25x Glass of Teeth
8x Tiny Kettle of Pickled Liars' Tongues
10x Illicit Volume of Unexpectedly Racy Fungal-Themed Poetry

Send them and I'll return the favor. I will try to update this ASAP whenever I trade something.

Another fun time of year in the Neath. I suppose even we the folks down a mile or so underground have more than just fire or strange oddities to ward off the Neath's Darkness. Gifts of Love or Hate from someone at the very least mean they acknowledge you, and it can be flattering to have an admirer, or (in the case of hateful gifts) can fill you with joy since it probably means they are jealous which can also be flattering in an ego building sort of way. (tho if the "probably" random number generator sends you a gift of a Devilbone Die, it is more because its genuinely mocking you unlike other examples....)

    (edit: ugh me and typos!)

I'm a bit miffed there are no new NPC marriage options, especially for the notorious Missionary/Firebrand duo, but the new companions look interesting and have good art . . . just a shame the card never appears, so only my alt was able to nab one.

I'm hoping to acquire all the non-Fate FotER companions I didn't have from last year - 9 of them. I've got 21 Masquing and 63 Masquingsworth of rose gifts, and I've got the Lady in Lilac and The Feast of the Rose cards in my hand. What are the odds that I'll be able to achieve my goal (i.e. that I'll draw the Encounter at the Feast card 9 times)?

    Same for my main.

I've always wondered if items like Devilbone Die could be given usages, like making certain cards more frequent or allowing one to temporarily make adjustments to their deck . . . could make festivals less frustrating, while providing an extra element to the game, and giving a usage to seemingly useless items.

As an unrepentant clutter fetishist, I would like to recive a kettle of liars tounges and a buttered chess piece. I'm running a little low on those higher teir items, but can afford to return in kind, though if its all the same I'd rather send gifts of equal value (probably teeth or poetry). I'd also just like more masquing, so everything is welcome and will be reciprocated.

EDIT: Thanks to those who have sent me knights and kettles. Tat collection is now complete! I am still happy to trade items with anybody and no longer have any preferences as to what I receive. Thanks again.

Tanned Mask is best in slot for Shadowy (I think). The Hearse is best in slot for Persuasive - it only gives +1, but it's the only Persuasive transport (and it's also best in Bizarre, which is mostly useless but nevertheless neat because generally that's the hardest of the BDR to raise).

Then you have the Rosary which is only useful for BDR (unless you go Seeking) and the rest are literally only for masking or collecting.

Yeah, I just drew "an encounter" and it seems so.

I must say, without a 30 masq companion, gift giving for non-fate user isn't much profitable, since with the "Feast of the rose" card you can grind masquing quite easily (and gives usually several echoes worth of stuff, too). In theory you could even have multiple companions, grinding masquing to 20 and then using "an encounter" card . Unless "the feast" is undrawable when "an encounter at the feast" and the lady in lilac appear?

My first Feast I got almost all (if not all) the non fate locked companions without trading gifts. Last year I got the Diplomat, The Cat Chiefest Claw, the Pentecost Ape, and got the acquaitance with the Princess.
This year I traded mainly because I wanted the gifts.
I think the non fate locked masquing was intended more as a discount for the fate locked companions rather than a way to get 20+ masquing companions.

To be honest I prefer this way, since I'm not a big fan of the 20+ masquing grinding thing.

In case anyone is not aware of this, it is NOT possible to get to 31 Masquing by turning in non-Fate gifts until one reaches level 29 and then turning in a 2 Masquing gift. I just tried doing that, and once I had reached level 29, the option to turn in 2 Masquing gifts locked.

Ok, I know this might set me up for ridicule and a lecture about how random number generators work, but just hear me out.

I have been pretty much checking my cards hourly for the lady in lilac. I get the feast of the rose card all the time, and even the companion choosing card a bunch, but never the lady.

I first got the lady using the mobile app (I know, dumb move, but I was at work) on like the first day it was available and it essentially bugged out and nothing happened. I'm wondering if this somehow broke my account and the ability to get that card.

I'm holding a companion choosing card in reserve waiting for the lady, and maybe having that card in your hand prevents the lady from coming?

I care because I invested $20 to get 100 fate-masquing worth of items to upgrade my secular missionary and I'm starting to worry that it will all be wasted. I feel like people with fate masquing items should be guaranteed a storylet somewhere (House of Chimes, maybe?) without having to wait for the card to show up.

I moved to a remote location, which is advice I saw here and was awesome, frankly felt stupid for not thinking of it myself. I get the dang feeding my plant card constantly, heck even the dining with the crew of the Galatea card has come up twice or more.

And of course once I post this I'll probably get the card, which is also another reason I'm doing so. :P

You need fear not! The Lady and Encounters cards have, in the past, become storylets at the end of the Feast (as Mr. Sacks did in January).

It's funny, a while ago I was on here asking questions about that stupid plant. I was getting constant cards, and I wanted to get rid of them. I eventually decided to power on to Attending 18 to get rid of all the cards. Guess what? Three months or so later, I've seen like five plant cards.
Good luck with your current endeavor. I think we all can sympathize with how obnoxious the RNG can be.

Just to clarify, this isn't a fourth wall moment: the Lady in Lilac will not appear in Ladybones Road if you're drawing there. And always draw from a place with few location cards like the Forgotten Quarter.

She actually appears in Ladybones. I'm there all the time grinding for Valuable Secrets card and got the card a few times.

I finally got my first tattoo, a very enigmatic one of a invisible city. In doing so, I encountered a pop culture reference, some bizarre, and a lil specially enigmatic thing.

18?! That's a lot of pearls, jade, and dead rats.

Not really as it gets easier at higher levels. If you really want to get rid of everything regarding the plant and not worrying about resources you need to win the tournament, DON'T claim your reward and increase Attending to level 19.
Other way is to get to 19 and not have the resources required for the current plant battle (wines, for example).

I believe they come up most often on Ladybones Road. So if you aren't there, you'll be less likely to draw it.

No, these cards have nothing to do with Ladybones Road. You can draw then equally anywhere in London.

If anything, you're slightly *less* likely to draw these in Ladybones Road, since there are cards out there which *only* appear in Ladybones Road, so by going to a location without any location specific cards you increase your chances to draw the ones you want. But I believe that the increase is this probability is negligent.

    When is the feast ending?

The Feast will end on the 20th February. The Lady in Lilac and Encounters at the Feast will remain available until the 24th, after which your remaining Masquing will be converted to Making Waves when Time, the Healer visits.

Best of luck getting all the companionship you desire. Although please don't despair if it looks like you might need another year or two to track down all of the intriguing characters wandering the streets for the Feast.

You need two tattoos for that.

You actually only need one to experience it(I got my second tattoo this year and I could watch her tattoo a pale visitor), are you sure you didn't get the name as your tattoo? That tattoo doesn't give you a tattoo so you may have missed that.

and the incident does disappear for the next feast IIRC(it should say on the quality, just find it in circumstances or the story tab).

    An Incident at Millicent's
[You may not have another incident at Millicent's this Feast.]

Thanks, Master. I have 2 for that, but I don't want to get the tatt unless it fits Alys, so. ^.^ Though I suppose I could find out on my alt, she loves secrets.

Alts: (please direct all inquiries to Alys & say who they're for)
-Nikki, the Playful Daredevil, leading the constables on merry chases across London at every available opportunity. It's not a good robbery if you didn't get chased~
-Shylarah, waifish, wide-eyed, painfully foreign, entirely untamed. Her search for a way home now leads her to Parabola. There's something about her...
-Dr. Maxwell Thomas, a kindhearted physician who can't stand to see suffering. Moral to a fault, even to his own detriment. Unlucky in love.

I know the devil companions can be achieved with the least fate from a 5-card lodging, and I've got my dearest deviless. But what about the text? Are they the same with the text from the Feast?

No, but Masquing will probably go away!

Leftover Masquing is supposed turn into MW, though I don't know at what conversion rate.
    Rose-gifts remain.

And FYI - both the "A Lady in Lilac" card and the "An Encounter at the Feast" card are now a pinned storylet.

I'm very excited - I managed to get all the [edit: non-fate] companions (aside from the Canny Costermonger, whom I already had) this year, with one (or several) of every gift (actually, 27 Glasses of Teeth if we're being specific) to spare! *fist-pumps the air* What a fantastic feast! I wish everybody similar luck.
