Delicious friends, the Feast of the Exceptional Rose will soon be upon us!
Prepare your heart for Fallen London's festival of love and gifts, which will begin 6th of February and last for two weeks.
More specifics to follow when the festival begins.

The sidebar has occasionally made clear that, while London has papered "Festival of Love" over the event, it's actually a celebration of passion: its rise and fall, its rich beauty, its deadly ferocity... Making divorce a selling point of the Feast of the Exceptional Rose doesn't degrade the season. It just makes it more honest.

I'd quite like the Firebrand and Missionary as new spouses. The FotER versions each cost as much as the Boneless Consort, so it'd make sense for them to be +3BDR spouses (the Firebrand being Dreaded, and the Missionary being Respectable). It's also allow a level of BDR customisation that doesn't mean that everyone has to marry a squid-person for max BDR.

Well, there might well be something like that in the works. Or at least now would be an opportune time, as Hannah just announced in the Twitch stream that they were bringing Marriages and Divorces back with this feast (as well as some new companions), so that would be a nice time to see some NPC love as well.

Oh well, I guess it is more than made up for with the myriad Companions that cost nothing but community involvement and determination. I'm just hoping they add a companion between 21 and 30 masqueing, since... well, the masqueing cap from cards is 20-21, which means the fate-free gifts don't have any user except saving yourself some card drawing. Well, maybe that's not true, but I'd like a "gift exchange manditory" companion added to the list, as I know you can get all free companions in one feast without ever exchanging gifts, if you're active enough. (I did, back during my first feast.)
The non-Fate locked gifts do still have a purpose for newer players, just not for senior players who have done the Feast multiple times before. :-( I too would like to see a new Companion or two whose addition to one's collection does not involve Fate. I have so many leftover Feast gifts that I could not use last year, because I had all of the Companions who might be obtained with a modest amount of Masquing, and my additional gifts could not boost my Masquing past the cap. To be clear, I got all the companions extant at the time, excluding fate ones (well, actually, a single fate one too), during my first feast. If someone with less than a year- less than six months, since I came in on the tail of hallowmas- can do that, my point stands pretty well. Not perfectly, but I stand by my point and complaint.
EDIT: to add to my point, which I still suspect some people might be missing, I didn't use any of the gifts for the fate-free ones; I got them all through *just* feast cards. edited by Grenem on 2/3/2017

I got all the companions on my first Feast too. I managed to start the gift-exchange thread on the forum, so there was an extremely large amount of gift exchange. It devastated my stores of Romantic Notions and such, but that's why I keep stocks of 2000 of each item anyway. You can never tell what you'll need.

Like, the Firebrand and Missionary would be perfect for such an upgrade; there are so few NPC spouses to choose, while PC spouses are currently unavailable, and it just feels that such a Valentine-themed festival would be an ideal introduction to such spouses.
This, there are literally only two non fate locked spouses that aren't other player marriages, but are extremely easy to get locked out of and you can't do anything to get them back if you lost them(fitting for SMEN if you sacrifice them, not anywhere else), you can't even pay to restart their stories or anything, they are just lost forever.

Please note that, unless things have changed dramatically from previous years, you don't buy the items directly, but pay to have them sent to someone else in your name.
Therefore, arranging equivalent exchanges with fellow players is highly recommended. (The IRC crowd tends to be quite reliable and helpful in this regard.)

That being said, isn’t it possible to raise Masquing on your own by taking on Menace Eradication Contracts of a certain nature? I think that would give you a 3:3 Fate-to-Masquing ratio, too.
Yes, you could raise Masquing that way, giving one Masquing per Fate like most of the Fate-locked gifts. It would take more actions than sending gifts and having them declined, but doesn't require anyone else.

Yes, it is my recollection also that no new companions were added last year; otherwise, I would have acquired them. But you are right, FBG could change that this year; I hope that they will.

The only downside to the Firebrand and Missionary as potential spouses is that would make them unavailable as best-in-slot Persuasive companions.
Of course, they could be your spouse and accompany you too, even if it would seen slightly odd mechanically.
Estelle Knoht wrote:

If people could get married but not divorce, that would create more stories of doomed love: two pining lovers kept apart by strict matrimony laws, even when their spouses are missing or dead...
But divorce can be the narrative focus of a romance story as well, and a diverse selection of story archetypes is important. We wouldn't want the Bazaar to get bored of London, after all.

And the Boneless Consort costs you all of your Connected: Society. There's not a reason for there to not be a cost. (Also, the BiS Persuasive companion is the 40 Renown: Tomb-Colonies one http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Newly-Born_Frost-Moth)

I don't think they are best-in slot, though . . .
There are items like "Appreciation Society" for the companion slot, which also have 9+ persuasive.
True, they are locked to professions, but I think the very nature of FL is to be unbalanced (with staff stating this once or twice). It may come down to a choice between whether a person wants the spouse or a current profession more, but the choice would be there and they'd be able to get those two as a spouse without losing the best-in slot options, should they be willing to change professions.
