Christmas has returned to the Neath! We have plenty in store for those festively inclined, with our very delicious Advent Calendar beginning today, along with the release of this year’s Christmas cards.

ADVENT CALENDAR
Each day from today through Christmas, visiting the Advent Calendar will reward you with something distinctly festive and gift-like.

Due to access code restrictions on mobile, it’s important to note that the Advent Calendar is only accessible through browser. Each day when you visit the calendar, click once to open the door for that day, and then click again to receive your prize!

Be certain to follow us on the channel of your choice (Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook) for reminders of when each gift is released! Each gift will only be available for a few days once they’re announced!

This Advent, you may even find a gift from snowy northern climes...

CHRISTMAS CARDS
Do not forget to let your loved ones and enemies know you’re thinking of them this Christmas! Yuletide cards are available starting today until the 31st December!

Your stock of cards will be replenished weekly by Time, the Healer. Find them in your Lodgings, under Send a Christmas Card. This year even the Mayor might get involved.

(You don’t need to be acquaintances to exchange Christmas cards, unless you intend to arrange for the Bazaar or the Mayor to send a Christmas card on your behalf when they become available.)

Find new players to exchange cards with here, on the Fallen London subreddit, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. Feel free to use #flcards to show your interest!

EXCEPTIONALLY FESTIVE MERCHANDISE
The Fallen London store is now bursting with clothes, accessories and gift ideas for you and your delicious friends, including some new delicious hoodies.

Featured is the Mr Sacks range, guaranteed to attract second glances, questions at your festive parties (is that Father Christmas? Where are his eyes?), and perhaps a few nightmares this holiday season!

Be certain to order your gifts with plenty of time for shipping! Here are Spreadshirt’s US and EU cutoff dates.

When I received my Bucket of Lacre from the Advent Calendar this morning, I got all the old storylets about how to transform it into Taste of Lacre, and I used the one that is best for me. But other than that bucket, I haven't seen any sources of Lacre yet this year, and I too wonder what's up. So far it's been a quiet and dull Christmas season.

Please don't forget: Snowed In! didn't begin until the 14th of December last year. Christmas in the Neath is our longest festival by some stretch, and we're still warming up. Expect 'snow' soon, and until then I hope the daily free gifts are enough to keep you entertained.

Delicious friends!

The Twelve Days of Mr Sacks have begun! Each day for the next twelve days a new card will appear in your opportunity deck, containing festive encounters, delightful presents and seasonal stories!

You don't have to check in every day - as long as you've played "Day 1: A Peevish Visit from Mr Sacks?" before mid-January you'll have until February to play through the sequence.

Season's salutations, one and all!

Just a quick question regarding this (or other festival): do you announce modifications, increased/decreased difficulty, similarities or anything comparable with previous year?

Are you wondering about Nomen? wink The Noman story will work this year as it did last year.

In general, we'll give you a heads-up on significant changes in the run-up to a Festival, or on the first day. If the changes are fundamental, as with Hallowmas, we'll give as much notice as possible (I believe we mentioned the Hallowmas rework shortly after Hallowmas 2015/1893). We do of course reserve the right to add surprises, but hopefully only ever delightful ones.

Hope that helps!

That's kind of the point of the Advent . . .

It's like a . . . lucky dip. You sometimes get amazing things, sometimes useless things, and often something in the middle. It's all free, so it's difficult to complain, and - honestly - the amazingly awesome stuff balances it out pretty well . . . you just got a 62-ish echo item and a one-of-a-kind item . . . even if you got rat-corpses for the rest of advent, in terms of average pay per day -? You're already onto a winner.

Like others have said, most of the appeal is the lore and the text.

This is my 4th Sackmas and I look forward to finally taking it easy. The first time around I was new and wasn't even aware of the advent calendar (which at the time was just links posted on social media). I spent my second one madly trying to gather enough lacre to upgrade all 3 5 card lodgings in one go and my 3rd one was another mad dash for lacre so I could keep a Noman alive until the feast.

This time around I have no grand plans to completely season specific goals and I can just sit back and enjoy the snow. The terrible, fishy smelling, false snow.

Yes, don't neglect the Noman experience just because you can't power through IroNoman marathon this year. You will still have plenty of time to chum around with your Noman, have a few drinks, cause some city mayhem, share a little sniffle over the fleeting gift of mortality, and more before Time melts it away for good. Or if that's all too touchy-feely for your taste and it's just cold hard lucre that you're after, you can pop your Noman like a pinata once you get to it a certain point and enjoy another cobblestone laid on your path to Heartlessness. The choice is yours!

I (and presumably others) sent in a support ticket to give additional cards starting Monday, so that *everyone* would get three batches of cards. Failbetter agreed and changed to date to the 5th.

If your TtH visits before Monday noon, you will most likely get your third batch on Christmas day. As far as I know, the timing has been adjusted in such a way to nobody will be disadvantaged.

I am still intrigued with the event involving Mr. Sacks, the "Taste of Lacre" and the other peculiar items/creatures of the end of the year. It should be interesting.

Just to confirm: I didn’t receive any new Cards today. Reminder text on the card itself now says: “From 5th December until Christmas Day, you will receive new Christmas cards each week via Time, the Healer”. Looks logical, as it makes three full calendar weeks, so everyone will get an equal number of cards.

Assuming nothing has changed, BOOM is a Must storylet activated by having St Arthur's Candle and lacking a quality gained through said event. As far as I know BOOM will not take Luminosity items nor Saints' Candles - that risk lies in trying to burn it for Searing Enigmas.

Agreed. The other point of the Advent Calendar is the fun of anticipation. What will it be today? Something great, or something mundane? My alt was very happy with the Searing Enigma she got, as it enabled her to complete her quest for St. Arthur's Candle without buying an Enigma with a Trade Secret.

I have a lore-question related to the Master's gifts:

As far as I know it is pretty much confirmed that Apples/Heart and Cups/Mirrors are the same ... indiviual. (The Curt Relicker pretty much explicitely says so.) However, when we visit the Masters using the Robe, Cups and Mirrors them seem to live in different places (as do the other "two").

I have this theory that there should be 12 Masters. With Eaten gone, 11 should be left. Apparently it's not public knowledge that, for instance, Cups is also Mirrors. So, do we know why two of the masters are double jobbers? Are there supposed to be two more indivuals and the Masters are hushing up the fact that two are missing? They seem to go to great lengths to make it seem like there are 11 Masters. Does the Bazaar know?

The Bazaar knows about Mr Eaten(and is even one of the reasons it exists...), but who knows about the uhh, "Second Master", if it even exists, there were never any direct mentions of that so either they are really good at hiding that information(something they didn't seem to do very well with Eaten, though he had much more influence on the world) or they are doing this for another reason(or maybe Hearts/Apples and Cups/Mirrors just really like having two roles).

The first one (Day 1) is a universal storylet. The following Days of Mr Sacks are cards.
However, if this plays out at in last year, then towards the very end of the holiday, the remaining Days' cards *might* show up as a storylet, to help the less lucky of us find them.

Is anyone else finding the "Twelve Days of Mr Sacks" cards to be unusually recalitrant this year? The last card I received was Day 8 sometime between December 25 and 30, and I have not received any more cards as far as I can recall. I don't think I've had this much trouble with the deck RNG before - previous Christmases had me finishing the story invariably in December.

The cards were released to the drawable deck, one day at a time, starting December 25th. This means that the Day 8 card was only made available on January 1st. It's definitely not possible to finish the Mr Sacks storyline before January 5th, when the Day 12 card was released. (same for last year).

With reliance on luck it's inevitable that some players would draw the cards quickly while some will have to wait a while. That's the nature of the RNG, especially when there are so many players.

In short - it's just (temporary) bad luck. If you keep flipping cards, the next ones will appear. Their frequency does increase as time goes by (they start as Abundant, but the earlier cards are now Ubiquitous).

Leonard of Quirm wrote:
Will there be a way to finish the story at some point without having to rely on deck chance? Penstock's Wicket has already opened, and I'm worried about missing out.

Possibly, as the season draws to its end, the remaining Mr Sacks cards might get converted to a pinned storylet, to help the less lucky players. No guarantees.

Anyone else out there who still hasn't finished the Sacks cards? Definitely starting to get a bit frustrating, since at this rate, by the time i have a chance to buy a noman it'll be going for top price. the rng has never been so cruel and capricious before...maybe i was due, but it's enough to turn one toward the revolutionaries....

It's definitely not 2 days, but I can confirm that the earlier cards are now Ubiquitous (just drew the cards for days 6 and 7 on an alt, and these at least are now Ubiquitous).

I'm not sure exactly how many days after the card is introduced the increase in frequency happens.

EDIT: Just drew the Day 8 card - it's also Ubiquitous

You basically casually save resources to buy buckets of lacre from the urchins over the course of a year or grind like crazy in December.

20 ToL is only possible with Fate expenditure or stacking it two years in a row.

By being overwhelmed by the urge to beat death.

Serious answer:

I'd imagine most people gathering that much are doing the Noman run, which means they've spent a good portion of their actions over the preceding months/year gathering the materials to buy buckets from the urchins. Then they prayed to the rng and used their notability to make the darn card show up, over and over again.

For reference, you get a high level of taste by using buckets to take you to 8 (via the semiotic monocle). Gambling tears can take you up to 11, and beyond that you either need to use the advent calendar & mr sacks cards, or (if you have a dreadful surmise and high skills) you can feed a bucket to a wild boar, which takes you up to 15. But that level of taste isn't really useful for much outside the Noman game, so you aren't missing out.

Oh, and some people will have taste left from last year.

Just trying to maximize what the season allows :-)

The first Noman went immediately down a well to get a candle. The second one has just turned into an Elemental Secret. And since the price is still low and I have lots of ToL from last year, I've created a third (again, for the Elemental Secret).

I likely won't get a fourth one, since the cost will probably be much higher by then (and I want to keep some ToL for next year). We'll see how fast I can make this third one also "bursts in a shower of riches".

You're entitled to that opinion, of course. Personally, I consider the Noman severely over-hyped. It's just a walking, talking pile of slush, for God's sake! wink
Not everyone's a crazy card-flipper, I think I got only two Tears over the course of the year. So, collecting Vials of Tears to finally get my hands on some Master's Blood is the best use of ToL in my eyes, once you've got all the Lodgings you want.

Since today is the last day of Sackmas, I decided to post my theories here in the Holiday thread. All the visitors have more or less made themselves known, but especially todays visitor. But I'll get to that.
  • Day 1. I suspected Spices by his response to being offered Prisoner's Honey, but he does not play games. Based of the words of Day 5's visitor, it would have to be Wines.
  • Day 2. The extremely camaraderie displayed leads me to suspect Apples.
  • Day 3. Stones. Obvious.
  • Day 4. No Visitor this night.
  • Day 5. Your being addressed as My Dear and the disdain for your visitor on Day 1, along with the bad pun, can only inevitably lead to Mirrors.
  • Day 6. As if his approach of conversation via the narrative were not a grandiose intimation, then his proclivity to agglomerate condemnable publications conclusively incriminates Pages. And he uses big words too.
  • Day 7. One of two I am less certain of; His mentioning of Wells and Guilt make me think of Veils.
  • Day 8. Silas the Showman, obviously.
  • Day 9. If not made clear by his shocking appearance, then the Unaccountably Peckish granted by one of the options should clinch it as Eaten.
  • Day 10. The other one I'm less certain of; He requests Wild Words, which could be used to sabatoge a Tragic Love Story, and he does enter through the Chimney, so Fires would make sense.
  • Day 11. Irons, does not speak, only writes.
  • Day 12. A Noman, plain and simple.
Now, how many of these Visitors are Nomadic, as Day 12's was, is up to debate. Excepting those that explicitly mention the phrase "My Original."
Feel free to point out anything that would contradict my hypotheses, except for Day 5 being Mr Sacks, Purringly and Fires being said to have a Purring voice. After all, Veils likes to play pretend.

Urrgh. Today's Advent calendar really screwed me over.

I was carefully following the guidelines to make the most ToL from your pails of snow, and had it at ToL 5 ready to use the Semiotic Monocle one last time. Then I opened the Advent calendar and it bumped me to ToL 6 so the monocle wouldn't work any more.

To make matters worse, I ended up trying the monocle on my Pail of So-called Snow anyway - not sure what I was thinking there - which did nothing but waste the pail. I could at least have tried putting another soul in it. I is disappoint.

As this thread is more visited and related to this festival I have another Fate question:
Does the Robe have any other benefits besides the comfort item? You get it from SNOWBOUND! and my guess is that you waste your chance to get An Unusual Pail of So-Called Snow. Do you get any Snow or ToL from the Robe?
My budget won't be able to cover the Robe, the mask from the Rose festival (++ Shadowy and BDR), this season investigation (the 8/12 Fate ones) and the future KS! Need a little planning! Big Grin

A comfort at home with your favourite master wink

As opposed to a home-comfort from your favourite master . . .

On a serious note, I imagine they might just stay at eleven, giving people time to get all eleven. I would guess - when it comes to a point people reasonable could have collected them all - they'd add new items or rotate a selection of items each year . . . that could also be an alternative.

Sinning Jenny Christmas card is either bugged or bad description. There is no option to accept it. You automatically accept it so if your loved one is sending it to you timed to reduce your suspicion actually wait til scandal and suspicion are high since you won't be able to wait to accept.

Does the Well teleport itself into your Lodgings using neathy magic or does Mr. Eaten visit you to rebuild the thing stone by stone.

Either scenario is equally disconcerting.

I'd stay away just to be safe, but I think it might start with the second candle. (But hey, not sure)

Then again, gaining a candle results in +1 SMEN, so you could use that to help boost yourself up without spending appalling secrets. (And maybe avoid winking isle, if you got a lot of people to send them to you)

So you have to NOT have the quality gained from it to get the BOOM storylet? That's a shame, because you could have also gotten the quality by sending Mr. Kennedy some rats as a goodbye present from Failbetter. It'd be a shame if you couldn't activate the bomb via SMEN because of giving a festive farewell to him. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Because if so, then I'm out of luck.

That quite depends on if you actually want the 'remaining' lodgings? Since they don't add anything extra above the odd option here and there... I for one never bothered to get the Sanctum for this lady, and can't say I've been missing it. The Noman, on the other hand, is quite a b____ to keep 'alive' in terms of investment costs if you really mean it... but apparently it's also the only remaining source for Elemental Sekrits. I'll be building a snowman again, as I wouldn't actually know what else to do with the sticky stuff... as for now. Maybe they'll surprise me smile.

I actually had an issue with the advent calendar as well, but only when trying to use the same link to log into my alt. Well, actually, you won't get any because it says time, the healer will only start giving them from 9th december and on, but when that time comes, it will just set the number to 7.

I don’t see when it says “9th of December” in the original post. I seem to remember that it was saying something like this before, but I have just re-read it, and there’s nothing about December 9th now.

It says it when you take the access code(try it on an alt).

    Hullo Lillian,

I resolved the issue by removing the "www" from the front of the URL (www.fallenlondon....). Once I did that it worked correctly. For some reason clicking the advent calendar link provided takes you to www.fallenlondon.storynexus.com rather than fallenlondon.storynexus.com.
