It was my understanding that it was impossible to get out of taking your reward from the oddities, so I'm asking if there actually is some way to not take the reward from a bundle after opening it?

Unless the storylet you're in has a trigger which repeatedly fires it at you, you can escape by activating an item in your inventory (eg, a Renown item) which has its own storylet.
Not quite sure how this works with opening a bundle, I've never had a reason to try!

I just tried this on my alt, it doesn't seem like it's possible to get out of the storylet even if you perform an action with an item from your inventory, which is a bit unusual but at least we can't break the game like this :P
edit:to give more details, you can go into the storylets for your items and even perform actions there, but it will lead you back to opening the bundle when you finish. edited by The Master on 11/25/2016

It's probably an extra safety mechanism to keep the game from breaking. Programmers often add "just in case" conditions like this so that unexpected things don't have unexpected consequences.

It's just to hinder things going unresolved that need to be resolved (because otherwise seriously strange stuff might happen) - it works the same when choosing/changing a Destiny for example, no way leaving The Gates of Midnight without getting one. So neither players nor telcos nor earthquakes can accidentally break things.

Yeah, it's definitely a safety check. I bet it's so players aren't eligible for the storylet after taking an option that gives a Bundle reward, and thus can't click "try again" to go back into the storylet before opening the Bundle.

It is a safety mechanism. If you have a bundle they will make you open it with a autofire story. And all the stories that give you a bundle is locked when you have one to prevent you from accidentally overwriting the current reward.
