Recurring server hiccups Messages in this topic - RSS

I'm getting recurring error messages when I draw cards, or go to new places in London, or when I try to return to my hand of cards. Sometimes several in a row. Not quite unplayable, but it does not bode well for doing anything I'd wish to make a journal entry for. It's only been going on for an hour or two now, but I'm concerned that it might continue all through the weekend unless someone does something. Am I alone in getting these error messages?

EDIT: I just checked a grammar site to find out that I should have used "recurring" instead of "reoccurring". And even though the issue is now resolved, I didn't want to leave my erroneous grammar to be stumbled upon in the future.

How this usually works is:
1) there's one database for persistent storage of everything. If this breaks, everything breaks.
(I have no experience with distributed/replicated databases, and you need them synchronized anyway if you want to be sure that there's nothing that can be abused by determined users)

2) there are many application servers (that's where the actual code for generating pages and processing any actions runs); as far as I can tell, fallen london runs on Amazon's cloud, which means many of those can be quickly started/stopped, even automatically in response to demand (i.e. more holiday -> more players -> more servers needed -> more servers running; it's not *that* simple, but that is the essence of the principle)
Application servers can also be placed in different geographical locales (for starters, think europe/america/australia/...) so that when your browser goes to www.ultramegasuper.url, it can go to the closest one depending on where you are at the moment. (they still all have to share the same database, though, which can mean longer delays there)

3) if everything works asbestos it can, every session (from login to logout) is tied to a particular application server, so that the server can have some resources prepared for that session (like, say, it can remember all your stats, qualities, and items without loading them from database every time - reducing or eliminating any/most/some database delays). This requires some coordination in case a server suddenly shuts down, or somebody manages to concat a different server without telling the first server, but it's generally a great benefit.
(you don't normally get to pick which application server you contact, you don't normally get to even *see* that there are multiple application servers; there's a different server in front of them (load balancer, reverse proxy, whatever) that makes those decicions)

4) if one of those servers start getting into problems (hardware failure, too many sessions, slow connections to database, DDoS attacks), any sessions tied to that server will see problems (delays, lag, inability to connect, explosive errors, ...). Sessions tied to other servers won't see those errors, unless the other servers also get problems.

It's possible (and, I suspect, likely) that different browsers from the same computer will get assigned to different application servers.
You might switch by logging out and back again (but it's not guaranteed). It's also possible that the load balancer will decide to switch you even without that. Or that the problems will migrate between servers.

(all of this is written from the position of somebody who only really implements application code - I get in concact will most of that, but don't actually deal with it seriously or even regularly; but I hope I at least painted a reasonably approximating picture)

TL;DR: characters *do* live on different servers, but they can migrate, and have a solid lifebase underneath.

That's what I was thinking too, although at the moment the problem has gotten better for me without seeming to have gotten better for a lot of other people.
My main account (the one that was useless 12 hours ago) is now doing okay. I crashed thrice in my 20 actions, which isn't terrible, compared to almost 20 for 20 actions yesterday....
I did get one crash on my alt this morning, but only the one.

This would be bad at anytime but I agree that is additionally frustrating at the moment.

I was doing the Notability confession grind and not being sure whether the item conversion has worked and the game bugging out when you summon the amanuensis makes it worse.

I was considering spending the Fate to get a watchful doll but this bug is just too frustrating and I don't want to risk RL money at the moment.

Sorry RL means I am not a very active player at the moment. No social actions unless you are prepared to wait and definitely no sparring or other mult-action things.

No Calling Cards or boxed cats please. Will take dupes on the affluent photographers. Other social invitations welcome. Parabolan Kittens usually available, send me an in-game social action saying you want one and I will get one to you as soon as possible.

Dear FBG, server errors happen and that is perfectly okay, but if you do not get to fix this before Monday, please consider extending Hallowmas for a couple of days longer than planned. It is really quite impossible to do the Hallowmas-required Notability grind like this.

I've gotten it doing pretty much anything, including switching tabs, doing various actions, clicking on my opportunity deck...

In addition to the above problems, I've been getting an issue where after a crash, it shows me the results of my actions but doesn't actually apply them. So I'll click accept on something, crash, refresh, and it shows me the results (that didn't actually happen or change anything) and the options for the action below it.

Annoyingly it showed me gaining level 6 in my salon, but that was an action that didn't actually apply. The second attempt only boosted me up to level 5.

Aye, can't trade confessions, and I had a card repeatedly sending me back to the location I was in rather than opening properly earlier tonight.

And you are sure that you still qualified for that card? (Just checking.) If the card is discardable and you no longer qualify for it, it still stays in your hand, but does exactly what you describe: When you click on it, it only sends you back instead of letting you play the card. If the card is non-discardable and you no longer qualify, it just disappears. Which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on which card it is.

I'm getting this when trying to start an inventory conversion action, it keeps dumping me back to my character inventory page. I CAN click and see the story tab, but clicking on anything gives the server error.

It's too bad though, with the timing, I know many of us were grinding notability for the festival.

This problem is plaguing me and my alt too on firefox, chrome, safari, edge and opera. It's both puzzling and vexing.

In addition to randomly going to the Myself tab, it also gives the "something terrible has happened" error messages with alarming frequency like so on various browsers, even with the cache and cookies cleared:

After clicking "if you click here, all will likely be well", the page will refresh and I will be taken to the Myself tab, where (if I'm unlucky), this will happen again when I click the Story tab.

Yeah, it's producing some very strange results. Case in point:

It's showing results and choices on the same page.

Also getting heaps of errors here. Often multiple in a row. Worst is when trying to convert items. Will sometimes bring up the results of an action but then not apply them.

Same issue. It's really a pain considering I decided to try my hand at the limited-time-availability Notability confession grind. Difficult grinds for a seasonal event with a clock ticking down are a really bad time to have the game become nearly unplayable. upset

Yep, crashing about every second action for me. Can't determine what specifically is causing it; seems random.

I was seeing this a little bit this afternoon when it was annoying but fine. Then it disappeared for a while. Now it's back with a vengeance and makes the game completely unplayable. For me it doesn't seem to be tied to the opportunity deck specifically. I've had it happen when I clicked on a card, attempted to discard a card, or attempted to open a static storylet. At the moment, once a character hits it it seems to get stuck, unable to look at the story tab. I don't know for sure how long this lasts as after a few tries I just give up and leave it for an hour or so.

Yes, me too. I had this problem yesterday evening, and still having trouble this morning. My alts Jack and Edith are the accounts affected, but it only seems to affect the Tier 3 conversions. I spent some time flipping cards and playing some storylets, and all seemed normal. But when I switched back to try and do some MW conversions, it was back to the error messages. Interestingly, I was even able to interact with other inventory items (I petted my Starveling Cat, for ex.), just not the Tier 3 conversion circuit.

I sent in a support email, but thought I'd outline it here as well.

I had this problem last night and it persists up until right now. If anything, I think it's gotten worse; I can barely take three actions without a hiccup.

Seconding the notion that maybe Hallowmas should be extended a day or two. I'm getting maybe one action for every two attempts, and the ones that go through don't always give the advertised effects.

Last night I couldn't do a single action without an error . . . today has been on and off, but - right now - I can play the game faster than I've ever played it, as the speed is absolutely phenomenal compared to the speed I usually get (no error message in sight).

The selfish part of me hopes they don't extend the festival, as I just want to get it over with and visit Huffman already, but - well - I can see why some people would want/need it extended, as it's only fair. Maybe they can just dole out a few extra confessions and let the festival end on time, as opposed to extending the festival?

I've been having trouble since last night but repeated side-conversions works more consistently than trying to draw cards.

One thing good about the way drawing Slowcake works is that once you force draw him he goes into your active cards so he can't be discarded accidently
