Delicious friends! We have heard whisperings of Hallowmas and so we wanted to let you know a few things, ahead of our official announcement.

Firstly, those currently preparing for Hallowmas, know that it will again focus on Confessions, but function entirely different from previous years.

And secondly, we will be making an official announcement about the festival after 11th October, so keep an eye out around then.

* * *

The Feast of Masks will take place from 24th October until the 7th November. But be aware, this festival of confessions and betrayal is unlike the ones that have come before it, and you may find that not everything will be revealed at once.

New for Hallowmas 1894

The Hallowmas of 1894 will include some new features, such as:
 • new confessions from prominent Fallen London characters
 • an entirely new way to trade confessions
 • certain companions will be involved
Fallen London is a city of a thousand stories, and gathering secrets will attract certain powerful entities of the Neath. Will you honour the trust of those who confess?

Confessions at the Feast of Masks

Don your mask and collect confessions. Then it’ll be your choice to trade them to friends, factions, or other prominent people of the Neath.

At the end of the festival, Mr. Huffam will still be about looking to interview festival-goers. While the Spirit of Hallowmas is absent this year, you will still discover a Hallowmas epilogue and special epithet.

Destinies

The ability to acquire or change your destiny will be the same as previous years. This can only be done at certain times of the year, so be sure to take advantage of the chance!

Oh no, the Hallowmas nostalgia is starting to kick in. Even if there’s no mechanical reason to do so, I loved Hallowmas as the season of mass networking between players.

I am sorely tempted to set up shop and take over Caligula’s Coffee for a Hallowmas party for me and 300 of my closest friends. It would be totally unrelated to anything official or any specific game mechanic, just a big mixer party for folks to meet each other. Aaaa someone talk me out of this, talk me down from the ledge of wild parties and endless inboxes full of kind messages from new friends. I am ~this close~ to throwing a huge coffee party and I know I shouldn’t. But my longing…
oh no, my will to resist is fading. oh no oh noooooooooooooo h e l p
Wasn't around last year's Hallowmas, but this thread got me hyped for this year's!
In the meantime, can someone post a small brief what was with the networking, social actions and sheets? smile

Cheers!

Short summary?

Everyone could request confessions from other people. this required 3 actions and that that person had not given a confession to them yet. A POSI could use two types of confessions indefinitely, while a non-POSI had easier options that could only get 6 confessions.

If Someone asked for a confession from you, you could decline (a bit rude, but...) or accept. You needed a certain level of menace to get and to accept confession requests (3 in each associated menace)- and without that level of menace, you'd get told you didn't have the required stats. Accepting a confession would cure menaces (-10 cp in each associated menace), and give you 1 spirit of hallowmas.

A POSI could turn in a confession properly for 4 spirit, or betray and get more material rewards, but only two spirit. People left unbetrayed could be betrayed next year, or the secret buried again.
{there was also a less obvious non-betrayal that only gave 2 spirit, but that doesn't matter.}

So Nitebrite set up this massive networking thread so everyone could ask everyone else for confessions much more easily, and everyone was deliberately grinding menaces and doing this en-masse. This makes no sense from a narative perspective, and it wasn't exactly the most fun way to do things, so it's not a suprise they changed it.

{There were also a few standardized events, but the big thing was this. also: http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Visitors_at_Hallowmas and (this hub page has last year's newly added npc confessions.[1]) http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Hallowmas}

At the end of the season, you would get rewards from mr. huffman, who's writing up the hallowmas edition. it'll open a new option on one's public.

[1]{Throughout the last week or so of the season, you could ask six npcs for a confession (one a day, IIRC)- mostly ones from sunless sea, though there was an interesting one from the bishop of southwark. then, once all six had been released, you could keep or betray their trust. Betrayal would give 5 echoes and 2 spirit of hallowmas, while keeping the secret would give 2.5 echoes and 4 spirit of hallowmas. Hopefully there'll be something like that in the new one, the lore was neat!}

Thousands is a bit of an exaggeration. We had a little over 300 participants, and contacts lists don't even break until you hit 1400. But yeah that tech could use some upgrading to handle decently sized lists of contacts in the literal thousands one day. That's the dream.

Hallowmas is coming and that means NPC confessions! Usually Sunless Sea promotional characters, but perhaps more.

It'd be fun if we could suggest who we would like to see show up for Hallowmas next year, similar to how we can suggest Mayoral candidates. There's all kinds of fave characters out there whose confessions I'd love to hear for sure.

Last year's was my first Hallowmas in the Neath and I very much enjoyed it - I wasn't even aware that we really "broke" the holiday by confessing so much. Anyway, I am so looking forward to this Hallowmas and hope they have come up with some great new mechanics.

To be clear- when I say "wasn't the most fun way to do things", I mean in comparison to other possible alternatives, not that it had a negative fun level. And yeah, it was fun- didn't change that if you did a perfect balance of sending and receiving you had to spend 300 actions sending requests, 100+{time to grind two menaces back to 3}*100 actions, and then spend another 100 actions turning them all in, if you wanted to get the top rewards. It was a more action-intensive event than, say, the feast of the rose, in other words.

@Robin Alexander: yes, it went smoothly, but I don't think FBG expected (or intended) so many people to get over 1000 points. Since they didn't even have any special rewards for more than 500.

I don't think it is the fact that many people got top prizes and more the fact that it is a narrative collapse where swarms of people dancing around the Bazaar, wearing scandalous clothing and actively clawing themselves with Starveling Cats, all for the sake of good money.

Also, many people's friend list exploded with thousands of people they don't normally talk to, which probably put a strain on the server a little. Guilty as charged.

It can be a bit confusing, but there are two types of confessions at play here:

Item-like confessions:
There are 7 total, of which 4 are already available (from Jenny, the Widow, the Kashmiri Princess, and the Illuminated Gentleman), and 3 are to become available on October 31st (from Lettice, Feducci, and the Captivating Princess).

We've received 3 such confessions (at random), and more opportunities to get a few should open at some yet unknown times during the holiday.

These are the confessions we can trade, use to enhance companions, or trade for Favours.

You can see these confessions in your inventory's curiosity section.

Quality-like confessions:
These are available once a day (and then are gone). So far we've had the Magician yesterday, and the Surgeon today.

There's no use in the game yet for these. But presumably, after the holiday when Mr Huffam makes his rounds, some rewards might be available based on the number of such confessions collected (that is, we'll be rewarded for playing daily and getting each of these qualities).

You can see these confessions in your Myself tab, under the Story section.

Yes, it was some work, and I was looking forward to being more organized this year with my invitations/betrayals/secrets. I really enjoyed the teamwork of the holiday, and, while I didn't reach 500 spirit with any of my characters, I really had fun with the level I reached. I also made contact with a lot of players, which was a really cool side effect of Nitebrite's massive effort.

I'm both excited and a tad apprehensive of my first Hallowmas. And though things seem to be changing for this year, I might as well ask: I've heard rumours it would be useful to have your soul when celebrating Hallowmas, is this true? Should I focus on gathering as many bundles of oddities as I can?

And while they are free confessions, they aren't ones people can upgrade companions with which is probably what people are after.
