There've been so many FL soundtrack posts on Tumblr, I'm happy to see this thread re-emerge. Personally, I'm surprised no-one's nominated Florence + The Machine, considering how much of her work concerns the themes of exotic colour spectra, death by water, and being overwhelmed by forces beyond mortal control. She has as much to say about willing submission to annihilating passion as the most Bazaar-struck Feast-fiend.

I have composed a Fallen London soundtrack in five parts, each taking its broad theme from a chapter of The Waste Land and its Neathy analogue. The Burial of the Dead evokes mortality, decay, trauma and renewal; A Game of Chess, love, hatred and adversariality; The Fire Sermon, the Correspondence, the Judgements and the Liberation of Night; Death by Water, the unforgiving, all-devouring sea; and What The Thunder Said, the willing sacrifice of the self and the overwhelming passions of nature. There is no sixth chapter. Ware serpents.

The Burial of the Dead

Florence + the Machine - My Boy Builds Coffins
Florence + the Machine - Blinding
Florence + the Machine - Only If For A Night
Florence + the Machine - Shake It Out
Florence + the Machine - Leave My Body

A Game of Chess

Florence + the Machine - I'm Not Calling You A Liar
Florence + the Machine - Kiss With A Fist
Florence + the Machine - Girl With One Eye

The Fire Sermon

Florence + the Machine - Spectrum
Florence + the Machine - All This and Heaven Too
Florence + the Machine - Lover to Lover
Florence + the Machine - Seven Devils
Florence + the Machine - Cosmic Love
Florence + the Machine - No Light, No Light

Death By Water

Florence + the Machine - What The Water Gave Me
Florence + the Machine - Never Let Me Go
Florence + the Machine - Drumming Song

What The Thunder Said

Florence + the Machine - Rabbit Heart
Florence + the Machine - Hurricane Drunk
Florence + the Machine - Dog Days Are Over
Florence + the Machine - Heartlines

Is Someone There?

Florence + the Machine - Breaking Down

Songs for those who suffer from recurring dreams of drowning, and worse:

Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows - Hearse-Shaped Basins of Darkest Matter
Birdeatsbaby - The Lighthouse (I find the lyrics in this one to be startlingly reminiscent of the Northridden)
Zoë Keating - Escape Artist
Through Waves - This Too Shall Pass, Movement II
Birdeatsbaby - The Sailor's Wife
Nouvelle Vague - Waves
Terrance Zdunich and Jessica Lowndes - In All My Dreams I Drown

Also, I must echo Sir Frederick's suggestions for Death By Water, because I absolutely love them. (in fact I adore and endorse the entire soundtrack proposed by him, but this part is most relevant to my post, so I'll stick to it.)

This one might be of interest too - modern lyrics, but conjuring the energy of Caravan Palace (which I would also recommend for this list.)

Oh, I love this thread! Not to mention it's filled to the brim with good musical taste! Absolutely delicious that!

Right, here are several pieces out of my thousands upon thousands collection.
Only several are kind of, roughly thematical - the rest, well they just pop in my mind from time to time when I lurk in FL or drown in SS. Big Grin

Edit: Aaaand I'll post the rest of the songs just as links instead as embedded items so the thread doen't slow-load or kill someones bandwidth.

(1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIPqwjFqzeQ / Doktor Kosmo - Holiday => I imagine this is one of the songs that play in a never ending loop inside the Hell-bound trains at Moloch Street.

(2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF4RCOcz9ow Tiny Tim - Living in the Sunlight => The Royal Bethlehem's secret theme.

(3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK_a73LC7_k Alexandar Borodin - Requiem => You can never go wrong with classical music. Also when I imagine the gates of the Avid Horizon opening or another city getting dragged underground - this is the musical piece that pops to mind.

(4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIPrY12-2q0 Fantomas - Rosemary's Baby => "A lonely night in the Iron Republic"

Personally, I downvoted you because I disagreed with your selection. Didn't mean for it to be taken personally - sorry if I managed to offend.

I wasn't offended, it just seemed pointlessly petty. I haven't liked some of the songs suggested here either, but I didn't go around giving other forum members negative rep because they have different tastes in music than I do. It's fine to not like my suggestion, but I don't see what was so wrong with my post itself.

Here's a fanmix I made, actually! May as well explain my reasoning for all the songs here, though. They mostly all have a melancholy indie-rock sound, which I think fits Fallen London quite well! Most of these lyrics fall somewhere on the scale between 'mournful' and 'angry as hell', which I think fits too!
Also, two of them have Seven in the name and some are about drowning. Fun times.

Blindness- Metric- Absolutely haunting. Starts out soft and sad, gets bitter and intense.

Despair- Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Nothing like an ode to despair to set the good ol' Fallen London atmosphere.
Seven Devils- Florence + the Machine- This is where the 'angry as hell' part comes in. Nice song to get revenge to.
Laughing with a Mouth of Blood- St. Vincent- Loving the dreamy, ominous quality this song has.
Power and Control (Acoustic)- Marina and the Diamonds- A soft, gentle song about manipulation and faking affections to gain power over people!
Yellow Flicker Beat- Lorde- A bit more modern sounding than some of the others on this mix but these lyrics are SO GOOD. Puts me in mind of both Seeking and the Liberation of Night.
Gigantomachy- Cake Bake Betty- A fairly pared-down song with great vocals and dreamlike lyrics.
Goat Shepard- Mirah- Another Super Duper Angry song about goats, good stuff
What the Water Gave Me- Florence + the Machine- Seeking: The Song. But seriously, this song is so great.
Seven Nation Army- Postmodern Jukebox- The vintage style of this one is so appealing, and the lyrics are seriously badass. Great cover of a great song.
Breathing Underwater- Metric- Starting and ending the mix with a song by one of my favorite bands seemed like a nice idea. And the lyrics for this one are fantastic.

I think I've found the musical rendition of some part of the Crimson Book, and other neathy goodness.

Oh, how fun!

256. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - "The Companions"
257. Kate Bush - "There Goes a Tenner"
258. Sergei Rachmaninoff - Isle of the Dead (op. 29)
259. Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 2 (not sure if anyone's smuggled his work down from the Surface these past several years...)
260. Niccolo Paganini - [insert your choice of literally any of his violin sonatas]
261. Johannes Brahms - Hungarian Dance No. 5 (though this is perfect for most things, in general)

231. Danny Schmidt - This Too Shall Pass I know it sounds kind of country-ish, but it's got that melancholy, ethereal feel.
232. The Tiny - Closer Similar reasons as the above. That unreal feeling. And it's a love song. You know what they say about the Bazaar and love

  • 233. Rainbow - On the Street of Dreams To be honest, I don't know why this reminds me of FL. Maybe it's the meeting in dreams bit? But it's a good song.

    234. Clark "Plazmataz" Powell - Flare Deep, dark, marvelous. This one's instrumental, by the way. Gives me shivers every time I listen.
    235. Candles and Clockwork (Alpha Version) The title alone is fitting. And this one's sad too. Why am I picking so many sad songs?
    236. Clark "Plazmataz" Powel - Rain I seem to like instrumentals today. Have fun trying to decipher the whispers that show up about halfway through.

    Think that's enough for now.

For some reason - and for me at least - the music of Vaughan Williams fits perfectly with different areas of Fallen London. Particularly his Sinfonia antartica with the Forgotten Quarter. And just look at those names: A Sea Symphony and A London Symphony!

Although I listen to many different genres of music, I prefer classical as the background for Fallen London.
