Characters Themes: Of the musical kind. Messages in this topic - RSS

I find it to be a fun passtime, pondering just what kind of music would accompany characters in a variety of situations; What kind of music would fit them as a theme?

So, I thought I would make a thread on it!

Go on, post songs! How would you describe your character in musical terms? What would play in any situation you can imagine them being in?

The most in-character song lyrics-wise of off the top of my head would be Iron Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, but I imagine in his off-time Barselaar would listen to something like this.

I can't find anything that really reflects the Cats and Parabola aspects of my character, but the other side of their coin is easy.

Like all the Navy Absimiliard is a creature of tradition -- but more so than most. Fellow officers in the Navy describe them as "... much better suited to the days of Wooden Ships and Iron Men."

Thus: A Drop of Nelson's Blood

I personally pick "The World is Not Enough" by Garage for Dirae Erinyes - though I suspect that song is pretty much the theme of every POSI character.

Also "Hammers in my Head" by Miracle of Sound. Good for Dirae Erinyes general perspective on life and probably for other dangerous oriented characters as well.

Let me see... The Professor's themes are Beethoven for when she is remembering her past, Mozart for when she is doing smart things and whatever played in Tom & Jerry cartoons (ie, classical music that we think is funny just because we associated them with cartoons) for the rest of the time.

The Six Handed Merchant's theme song would definitely be One Voice, by The Wailin' Jennys:

For anyone who knows Six's background (spoilers), this song has just the right mix of sweetness (and fridge-horror creepiness) to fit them well: wink

This is the sound of one voice
One people, one voice
A song for every one of us
This is the sound of one voice
This is the sound of one voice

I can easily picture Six singing this in a solo at the Singing Mandrakee while harmonizing all the parts at once.

Perfect song for a flawed man trying to make sense of a mad world. Also, the western vibe made it a no brainer for a man coming straight out of the prime cowboy days.

Miss Ludlow loves to do silly things. Whenever she is nanty narking, investigating crimes and bothering the Duchess, "Murder, she wrote" plays in my head. But there is also a time of prayer and reflection, which "Miserere" fits quite nicely.

You are absolutely welcome to do so! With any new character, I recommend looking them up in the Directory of Role Players and Their Characters (you can find my own listing there too!) and continuing to learn more about them through roleplaying.

Florence's backstory is Things We Lost In The Fire. Nowadays Science/Visions and Cosmic Love (by the singer she was named after, no less!) suit her well.

I haven't even gotten around to giving the Pathetic Seeker a proper name yet but Seven is definitely her theme song. You can probably tell how seriously I take her character from that.

While I have full playlists for both 'iterations' of my character, I feel Le Perv by Carpenter Brut, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzuPI7tk9B8), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap by ACDC, and Lose Your Soul by Dead Man's Bones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnEkboR86h0) work best for when Vortigaunt was known as The Melancholic Mercenary.

For when he became known as The Reformed Licentiate, Go Higher by Pop Evil (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXvkTuMyZpM), Blood of Angels by Brown Bird (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmneIEkQUeY), and Undefeated by Skillet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMr93ZZMFmY) . Blood of Angels also really works as a good Revolutionary/Liberation song in general.

The most fitting song I can think of is Copland's Clarinet Concerto. It captures the professor's inner sadness in the first half (Tragedy: The Death of a Brother and Melancholy 10 will do that to a person) and the lighter aspects of her character in the second half. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKkv6YpMqZE

The Hellfaring Mystic would probably be represented best by the Hellfarer OST I started compiling on my tumblog, seamoresunless. Black Sun's Hymn to Lucifer, the title theme from The Ninth Gate (indeed, the whole soundtrack!), and Coils unreleased Hellraiser soundtrack. Possible the theme from Clive Barlers Undying, also.

Pinned two songs, one for Professor Strix and another for Derek. Both are Brazilian songs, so I'll provide the translation in the spoiler:

    Prof.: "Flowers" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nB53snE5Go

    Derek: "Abandoned Major": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCIevU6KLQg

    [spoiler]
    Flowers

I've stared until I got tired
of looking at my eyes in the mirror
    I've cried because I destroyed
    the blooms in the flowerbed
The wrists and the fists are cut
    As my whole body
There are flowers climbing the roof
    And under my pillow
There are flowers all around me
There are flowers in everything I see

The pain will cure those griefs
    Blood tastes like tears
    The flowers smell like death
    Pain will cure those cuts

    Flowers!
    Flowers!
    Plastic flowers don't die.

    Abandoned Major

    I am lost
    with no parents
    Right in your front door
    I am asking
    Your hand
And a bit of your arm

    Crumbs from your yesterday bread
    Leftovers
    Interest me
    Small portions of illusions
    Sincere lies interest me
    They interest me

    I am asking
    For your hand
    Take me anywhere
    Give a bit
    Of protection
    To the abandoned major

Your body with or without love
    Leftovers interest me
    Love me like a brother
    Sincere lies interest me
    They interest me

    Crumbs from your yesterday bread
    Leftovers
    Interest me
    Small portions of illusions
    Sincere lies interest me
    They interest me

    I am asking
    For your hand
    Take me anywhere
    Give a bit
    Of protection
    To the abandoned major

I may have given this far too much thought over time.

Lord William's score is in two parts, both by the amazing band The Protomen. Whilst choosing a band that's primary work is a rock opera loosely based on the Megaman games might seem odd, their music is fitting and incredibly emotive, and just fantastic in general.

On the discovery of the murder of his daughter, and the subsequent heartbreak and depression

On his time in the Neath, and his pursuit of his quarry, the murderer of his daughter.
