Hi guys! I know that straw polls have a bit of a bum rap in the UK right now after they failed to predict GE2015 and Brexit - but just for fun I'd like to do one anyway! When you feel you've completed your election career, tell us who you've voted for and how much you've contributed to their tally, and I can make and maintain a google sheet so everyone can see how the forums voted!

UPDATE: Current tally HERE

Ganoidyn has pledged their support to the Jovial Contrarian - the Statesman of London! Ganoidyn has been fixing the election behind the scenes, and is contributing a full 20 election career and 7 notability [EDIT: 8 now!] to the Contrarian's cause, whatever it may be.

Fronkstrog prefers a much more direct approach, and having just gotten enough Notability to be promoted to Murderer, is now contributing 20 + 2 [EDIT: 3 now!] as an Agitator for the cause of Sinning Jenny.

Can whoever is downvoting people on this thread please stop?

It is your freedom to downvote as you please, but most people downvote posts because they found it objectionable and need a way to express that to the poster. The downvoted posts don't even have a quirky comment for you to be offended by, they are just votes. There's a lot of new faces around the forum, and it'd be nice not to drive them away for reasons unknown.

In addition to contributing 30 voices towards Jenny on his own, Passionario handed about about 300 Fate's worth of campaign materials to other Fixers supporting her cause.

No one is entirely sure why he's doing that. Some dismiss it as a matter of desire ('Scarlet Saint, scarlet stockings, need I say more?'), while others suspect that he might be one of the 'friends in high places' blackmailed by Jenny.

The truth is far more absurd. Passionario was one of the specialists assigned by the Masters to help Jenny with her campaign. When she severed her ties with the Bazaar, he was fired along with the rest of them - but the urchin delivering the message became a casualty in the Chimney-Pot Wars before he could deliver it. And so the eyeless Fixer continues to toil, greasing palms and calling in favours to bring about a victory for Jenny - whether she likes it or not.

18 July, 1894 (The Lofty Tower)

  • Hunched over your scribblings, you recite the entries to yourself, going through the lists from the older entries you know by heart to the newer ones freshly-copied from recently-opened letters; cancelling away outdated entries and scribbling the more recent numbers into the crowded margins. A knock at the door. "Another message, sir- mad- uh, y-" you retrieve the note and shut the door in his face, too eager for the latest figures to care about the banal niceties.

"Bonny Kate," you murmur to yourself, filling in the latest corrections. "Morkan Kassington - well, that's too bad. Alwaysmetara - such a remarkably swift return to prominence, all things considered... Catherine R- for heaven's sake-" and you strike out her entry entirely and rewrite her name on a completely new line.

It is just past two in the morning when your work is complete. The polls have spoken. Over a hundred and sixty Londoners have graciously consented to sharing their voting intentions, as well as the mayoral candidate on whose behalf they have campaigned by day, sabotaged by night, and otherwise manoeuvred at all hours.

Trembling with exhaustion, you set pen to paper for the last time, as you prepare to publish the conclusions of the mayoral poll:

"The results show that Sinning Jenny, of the Sisters of Abbey Rock, is likely to be the victor of this first mayoral election. Just over half of those polled have indicated that they intend to mobilise support on behalf of Jenny, who is predicted to end up with slightly under fifty percent of the final vote.

The Jovial Contrarian's supporters tend towards the more influential, although this difference is likely to be slight in the final results. Three out of every ten Londoners polled would have the Contrarian become London's first elected Mayor, although their reasons are vastly disparate. In the final tally, the Contrarian is expected to take almost a full third of the popular vote.

Reginald, the Bishop of Southwark, may be consoled over the mysterious impoverishment of his campaign by the fact that he will likely retain his election deposit, finishing at a respectable eighteen percent of the popular vote. Although less than 30 of the 167 polled indicated that they would support him, these 30 have so far shown themselves to be the most stalwart campaigners, drumming up the most influence per supporter. While the Bishop has come in third this year, he is likely to have gained a substantial base with which he may launch future campaigns."

I love this, like . .. very hard. I'm just tickled at the idea of the Fist of the Bazaar toiling away in service to the Masters -- helping Jenny -- all because of one dead messenger and word that never arrived.

She is Not A Good Person.

  • But almost no one is a good person in FL.

    Besides, neither candidate is perfect.

Mister "I perpetually have sand in my Forgotten Quarters because of THEM THUR DEV'LINS!" a.k.a the Bishop - is a looney akin to Captain Ahab from "Moby Dick". He got no tact nor what is needed to really fight the Fiery Bees. Not to mention his real end game goals are kind of bad.

The Contrarian on the other hand has a very solid mask made from his natural qualities of being sharp witted and silvery-tongued. But behind the facaede of intelligence and charm, he is "insecure", lost and a total pushover. I personally would never follow anyone who shows such lack in core leadership qualities like the Contrarian.

And now on the side tentacle - Jenny. Oh, she ain't no rose that one. But she ain't no stale rubbery lump either. She knows what she wants, knows how to get it and most importantly - she does it. I respect that. Of course, the tactics that she employs (i.e hoarding all Londoners secrets East in the safety of the Abby, the subtle blackmailing and manipulation of the populi and so on) are kind of...frown-worthy, but let's be also honest - such things are, dare I say, normal (be it in the game's universe and/or in real life).

The real deal with Jenny is to see if she'll deliver what she promises (as it is always with politicians and pseudo-politicians) which, even as a Jenny voter, I would say is a solid 50/50. As well, it will remain to see if her true agenda will be benign or will it be something preluding the creation of a power-mad tyrant that will in the long run, dunkle our bedunkles (thanks Mr. Pages)...but...eh.

In short - VOTE FER SIR GOOMY! Let's make London GRAPE again!

Jenny is corrupt and is set on corrupting others. Fair enough. Our other options: the Contrarian who has lost control of his campaign, if he ever had any, to forces that intend to destroy the Neath, and the Bishop who only wants one thing, and is comically inept at achieving it. Well, okay, two things: fighting hell, and self-denial. He's quite good at the second one.

Every day, Jenny's voteshare drops by 1%.
And I see the Bishop wriggling his way back towards that 20% mark! Hooray democracy!

(vote for the Contrarian! You just know that by next week he'll have February completely confused and locked up somewhere while his campaign marches renewed upon city hall!)

Level 20 skinny Campaigner supports Jenny with his 10 levels of Notability.
EDIT: How about adding a small chart there? If not, people who wish to do so can make a new Google xlsx and use this line of code:
    =importRange("1AbyF8Mm0bmIg6CN_pYEV9To2qKp13tZ6adSSYYUEaHs", "sheet1!I1")
It'll import the I1 (that's a capital 'i') to the cell; you'll need to replace I with K and M, add name of candidates on first column (or import those as well), add the values on the second and press Insert chart.

Joseph is currently a Campaigner for Sinning Jenny with an election career of 20 and a nobility of 9, but I'm planning on upping that point to 12 by the end of the election, if not hopefully higher. An alt of mine also is a Campaigner with 1 election career point, the only reason they're part of the election is because of those sweet sweet boots. Also, a bit off topic, but does anyone know why seemingly random posts are getting downvotes? I'm not seeing any notable issues with them, and yet they all had a -1. I upped them up to null it out, but it's still very curious.
EDIT: Ah, I think I see the issue. Pro-Jenny posts are being downvoted, both mine and the above included. I noticed that with the ones I upvoted and hoped that it wasn't the case, but maybe it is? Oh well.
EDIT #2: Thanks to whoever nulled that out!

    Chiltern wrote:

To be fair, it's not out of hate for the guy (most people love the war-hungry Bishop, after all, myself included). It's more out of fear for getting London and themselves possibly burnt to a crisp by literal Hell.

this pollster is quite moved by everyone's dedication to the democratic process, to the point where a number of people who do not regularly contribute to the forums have stepped up to make themselves heard. Not to worry, your intrepid reporter will not fail you in ensuring that you will always have up-to-the-minute coverage on how your chosen candidate is doing!

Jenny seems to have finally dipped below the 50% mark, which I'm sure is hopeful news for those supporting the Contrarian (who may or may not be December in disguise). Meanwhile the supporters of the Bishop are valiantly carrying on in the face of unpromising odds, just as he would like them to, I'm sure.

Right now, my main Skymaw is declaring for Jenny with 14 Fixer points and 7 notability. I fully expect them to reach level 20 on the former before the election is concluded.

Voting with alts is not my jam, so Belle Dame is declaring for boots. Uh, technically she's a campaigner and she's contributing one default point to Jenny. I'm gonna try to balance that out by holding off on my next notability point, until after the results have been tallied. Anyway, she's stuck in the abyss for now and in no position to campaign.

Fadi_efendi walks to the row of scarlet posters; they trace a line with their finger, then wipe it on their stambouline. "Glue's still wet. Be quick."
With skillful movements, the crew places their assortment of blue, gray and black posters on the spots of wet glue and press hard against the wall. It's over in seconds; Jenny's wall has now been claimed by the contrarian. The lookout gives the all-clear, and they leave the alley keeping close distance to the sinning nun's men.

in my dutiful updating of the poll results, this pollster has noticed (thanks to the spiffy chart so helpfully suggested by Skinnyman) that the Contrarian is slowly but surely gaining in vote share. However, this does not appear to be at the expense of Jenny - who stubbornly sits above 50% - but rather the Bishop, whose polled voteshare has dropped below 20%.

Will the final week of voting (and polling) see the Contrarian leap ahea- uhh- overtake Jenny? Will the polls prove wrong and the actual result surprise us all? Find out next week!

Keep up the good work, Ganoidyn. I am eager to see how your forum poll compares to the actual outcomes, signalling perhaps the extent of a 'silent majority' as well as some clue to their leanings.

I do hope FBG publishes actual polls using their data towards the end or afterwards. They mention polls on Twitter, at least. Which might be referring to these!

You must be a Person of Some Importance before you can have Notability, which is you are a relatively new player, is less likely. Nothing to worry about, though, and I hope you're enjoying the election.

Right now I'm contributing 30 votes to Jenny. It would be 31 if my TTH had come half an hour later last Friday. It will be 31 before the end of this week.

There's a point. We're presumably running a first-past-the-post race - but how might it play out in other electoral systems? Well, we couldn't exactly do proportional representation, with only one mayor - we might put the Bishop's head on Jenny's shoulders, but... well, I'll just leave you with that mental image. How about preferential voting? Who would be each candidate's supporters' second choice?

My main account is a 13+7 (soon to be 14+7) campaigner for the Contrarian. I also have a Seeking alt that's campaigning for Jenny (mostly for dem boots), but out of fairness, I plan on having them sit on one vote.

I'm noticing that despite the early discovery of the (alleged) mechanical disadvantage, the Fixer profession seems to be very popular among those on the forums :3 I'm unsurprised that Campaigner takes second for the BIS gift, but over the course of the last week I have decided that Agitator is just incredibly quick to advance, if all one wanted to do was hit 20 career in as short a span of time as possible.

I'm happy to see more people flooding in to declare for the Contrarian! Here's to hoping that over the next week, as people finalise their tallies and start pushing their Notability, we (the contrarian supporters) get a real boost in the straw polls!

Màiread is a true red petal and a campaigner for the magnificent Jenny, level 20 with 10 notability and rising - I'll probably get bored around 12 or 13, but who knows.

Nice work on the straw poll, by the way!

My character had thrown her, admittely somewhat halfhearted, lot in with Jenny as a level 6 Agitator + 7 Notability, mainly because the Bishop and his crusade against Hell chafes against her infernal connections and her messy past with the revolutionaries would make supporting the Contrarian rather... awkward.

    Wait, Notability counts too?

I'm for Jenny because I'm a dirty commie. Currently at 13 Fixer and 9 Notability. I can probably max out my career before the end, but I'm not getting any more notability.

Edit: Also, what's this about Spacemarine rallying votes for the Contrarian? I've been living under a rock this past week, you see.
