That empty little slot on my profile has been bugging me lately. How would one get a destiny? What do they do?

You can pick up a Destiny at various festivals! There will quite probably be such a festival sometime late in August, so until then you need not worry about your Destiny.

To be more specific, a destiny is a vision that your character has of their future. It's one of the ways that Failbetter has implemented a sort of "ending" in to the game (the other being Seeking). Gameplay-wise, they don't affect much. Most are just a simple +5 to one stat, though some offer a +3 in another stat.
Here is a link to the different destinies on the wiki; come the festival, you will be able to pick from these.
