I previously sailed north a decent distance, but surely Mr Eaten would be 77 leagues north of London. I do wish I had brought some navigational aid besides the For-My-Own-Good Compass. Should I keep going?

Many thanks to Charlotte de Witte for her assistance during preparations.

(No, of course I don't see any such candle. But I feel reassured that I'm Nearly There this time.)

A pleasant symmetry of the perfect 100.0. & 10.0. Still no Easter Eggs at this last "reasonable" number of significance, so I'm guessing there are none here on out either. BUT STILL WE ZAIL ON.

What is this? The ice sublimates, turning to steam for the first time in this timeless place. It took the full revolution of a Judgement before the Bazaar tracked me down, but at long last its servant has found me. That is no sunken island beneath me — its stone snout opens, and the flash of magma blinds my dark-accustomed eyes.

Suddenly, I remember. I remember libraries and lead plaques. Brush strokes capturing bristles and motors. Weak points plotted and alchemies imbibed. My long preparations have left even this shell of my body with defenses and plans.

Come then, beast that sunk Knossos and opened a path to Ilium. Do your masters remember the taste of surprise?

"Sklekto-selemach Talus'g——"

A mirror opens in the boiling sea.

Mewling interrupts the incantation. Magma shot through with thick, white sorrow engulfs my form.

The boiling subsides. Black, lumpen hills of cooled tephra drift in the waters. One of them has the barest remnant of a face.

Six kittens step onto the broken ice and shake themselves off. A short distance to the north, confusion replaces a dead god's anticipation.

=================
=================
=================

It is over! Thank you to everyone who read along. My expedition ended at Approaching Journey's End 443, or approximately 20,950 change points. Along the way, I gathered over 3,800 pages of each type of research, and earned something like 30 Dangerous to reach the stat cap.

Thank you to Vavkx Nonexus and Bunnyapocalips, who both just sent me Parabolan Kittens and inspired this final twist. I hope you understand that, in the twisted mind of a Seeker, using your gift to destroy all my dreams and end myself is a top compliment.

Additional thanks to Charlotte de Witte for helping me gather second chances long, long ago; and to Sebastian Olmen for providing some of the backstory to this expedition. Once I am back in London I shall contact them to see if they are even aware of this expedition!

I love that people are pursing these wild dreams. 77 approaching journe's end, 77 irrigo, 50 nightmares, tons of fab diamonds, etc. The adventurous spirit of this community is truly admirable. I hope to see some of these wild easter egg hunts pay off one day, but even if they don't the journey is exciting enough on its own. Props to you TheThirdPolice. This is the type of content I like to see when I visit the forums :-)

the crew around me are changed I see them now as shadows but most are dark that waves are not

Now, I am holding a bat. I am sitting in a pair of hands. It knows the salt winds that Olmen built, stone by stone. I try to see its wings but even here in (my cabin?) the zee commands my vision. The bat's presence here alone is a secret of appalling significance. Olmen's descendant wants me to turn back. For this, I could be convinced—

It does not close my eyes. The zubmarine's lamp rotted from the mirrors outward. It does not need the light; my blood navigates. The sudden darkness is an impossibility.

Glim falls, shattering into fragments in the air. I scream from the pain in my head. Over us, a cyclone of bats, crushing the air with the secrets only they can hear. I deny them as I have denied them all!

Becalmed for weeks. A moment of clarity. Take stock.

Slowly, I collect the knowledge to evade the ever stranger monsters. But they learn faster than I do. I can evade two more, perhaps three.

I am down to the final scraps of Olmen's charts. If my navigation is true, the final marks will let me pass the Grinning Reefs. After that, I am blind.

A human bone. (I count my limbs. Not my own.) Not even marrow left. I must fish for supper before the wind returns and I start to eat the ship.

I bite down, and the whirlwind once again drives me forward.

I am mumbling the secrets as something struggles under my tight fingers. "a cousin visits a fluke and the circus acrobats were seen to slip past the blockade and Benthic is producing artificial lacre and"

It would be cool if high qualities like this had little Easter eggs. Even if they were nothing useful, merely an acknowledgement at how far you've progressed. For example, imagine if Approaching Journey's End 50 let you dock at a distant lightship where the captain asks what the hell you're doing in the middle of bl--dy nowhere.

Captain's Log, Day ??
Approaching Journey's End 176
Partial Maps Remaining 113

A few minutes ago I reached the unheard-of calms of 7.4 Troubled Waters. A short series of miserable hands later, I end the day at an unusually furious 10.8. The rare decision to embark in piratery may also cause delay if Her Majesty's Navy shows up, as Time the Healer will need to reduce my Suspicion.

But I shouldn't look forward to Time the Healer:

You've gained 1 x Unaccountably Peckish (new total 6 - There is desperation)
You've gained 1 x Unaccountably Peckish (new total 7 - There is furious desire)
You've gained 1 x Unaccountably Peckish (new total 8 - There is a consuming passion)
You've gained 1 x Unaccountably Peckish (new total 9 - There is only hunger)
You've gained 1 x Unaccountably Peckish (new total 10 - THERE IS A VOID)

One final note in a shaking scrawl, "My friend, Please-" I don't read the rest. I tear the note apart and throw it away. Phrases catch on the wind, 'so much-', 'a price-' something about a sister (or is it a brother) swept away unread. When I see the next bat coming I don't even let it land, a flung stone sends it plummeting into the waves like lead. The book it was carrying is swept away, photos washing up on the shore, unrecognisable.†

Dark days are here. Now out of maps, any time I experience the Fury of the Unterzee, there is the risk of the Black Three: the perfect villainy of cards which will force a coin flip that could end my quest.

I still have enough zee ztories for one more evasion, and am nearly at another. Once I have used them up, there will be four Fury cards that can align to cause the coin flip.

No matter.

Onwards!

Your support has rocketed my progress to 79 already, somehow. And no, there's nothing new.

Incidentally, anyone with a Clipper or a Yacht should be able to zail forever. That sounded incredibly boring, and zubmarines are much cooler anyway, so there is an abrupt end in my future. It's actually quite a neat little tactical minigame this way, moving up and down the Fury border to get rid of bad cards.

Rough calculations suggest I'll "sink" after hitting 133, but a lot could change before then.

Witold Gombrowicz is taking over for a few days. The following quotes are from his book Diary, Vol. I.

Enormous, anonymous waters. We sail on.

The doctor made fun of me when I lost the chess game to the fumbler, whom he introduced to me as Goldberg, the master of Santa Fe. He said:
—You lost out of fear.
I said: I could give him the rook and win.

But my and his words are like silence before a shout. We sail on toward . . . We head for . . . and I now see clearly that the faces, conversations, movements are loaded. They are defeated. Frozen in a pitiless leading of something to . . . An unpredictable tension crouches in the smallest movement. We sail on. Yet this madness, this despair, this horror are inaccessible because they don't exist and because they are not, they are in a way that is impossible to refute. We sail on. We sail on the water, as if from another planet as night begins to steam in from all sides, our field of vision begins to narrow and we in it. Yet we sail on and in us grows without respite . . . what? . . . what? . . . We sail on.

Next day

Whatever we do, whatever we say, whatever we devote ourselves to, we sail and sail. While I write this, we also sail. The faces are terrifying because they are smiling. Terrifying movements because they are full of calmness and marvelous bliss.

We sail. The ship trembles, the machine works, the rustling billows of water at shipside, sprays and dregs, we sail on, plunging deeper, ever deeper into . . . reaching . . . Words are no help because while I am saying this, we sail on!

Thank you, my friends, thank you. This is the final missive from Gombrowicz before I return to my usual updates:

Next Day

We sail. The complete helplessness in the face of pathos, the incapacity to get at this power, which happens in us with a constant straining and tightening. Our uneventfulness, the most common uneventfulness, explodes like a bomb, like a thunderbolt, but beyond us. The explosion is unattainable for us, cursed in commonness. A moment ago, I met a Paraguayan at the bow and I said yes, I said, ha, I said!
Good day.
He, on the other hand, answered, ha, he answered, yes, he answered, O merciful God, he answered (sailing all the while):
Nice weather!

Even in my narrowing ocean this lure is a drop of spittle. He only sends it to conceal his new sabotage. The bats' veins run marble-pale, each moonish bite sends me among columns and Calvaries. My navigation is not impaired. I ate the maps long ago and my tendons remember them. They do not need my sight, so I dance in a cedar-scented midnight and laugh and laugh and laugh as the soldier's spear breaks skin.

When I was going to Nightmares 50 (shoulda kept on till 77, bad me) I found it was also a very tactical game. Wound management in particular is problematic in the Mirror Marches, and eventually -- if you are seeking to increase your Nightmares -- you will find there are cards that you simply cannot play because of wounds. For me it happened somewhere around the 30's.

Fascinating that zailing forever is also a mini-game within a game.

My earlier estimate (death at 133) is now way off as my strategy improved. (Or else I can't do math — nah, I'll stick with the first story.) Now at 136 and only 2/3 of the way through my Partial Maps, which will be the limiting resource.

*Peers at the murmuring figures through a very powerful telescope.*

Hello there! I am moving to a different continent tomorrow. It's been taking up a bit of time, as you can imagine, but I promise I will cross the ocean much faster in real life than I do here. Once I'm semi-settled I can probably push myself into a fatal current pretty quickly. My delay may also be related to a sorrow at my impending doom and the end of a long saga.

A couple answers for the curious:

— If I remember my planning from long ago, this is trivial (though still time-consuming) to achieve with a Clipper or Yacht. I chose the Zub because I wanted a challenge: at some point, I will be set all the way back to AJE 5 against my will.

— East is for salt and the peaceful. I zail NORTH, to dread and desire.

I started today's voyaging immediately after posting the explanation above. Six actions in, the nightmare scenario occurred:

(That last one is the correct image for Hardship and Want.)

The Helvetica Scenario (two game-ending cards in hand, leaving me no choice but to play the third) has already forced me to climb to Troubled Waters 10.6. Even if I succeed at one of these luck challenges, I will only drop to 10.1, still at the Fury's mercy. The Helvetica Scenario will remain, and depending on the draw I may need to attempt a second luck challenge immediately.

It is too early in the morning to face drowning. I will leave you all (and myself) in suspense a little longer.

Wonderful! Ridiculous obsession. That is quite SMEN. I can't but imagine a correspondence sigil will be originated after you get 777: a story between a seeker captain and the deep water, "hurtling forever towards the north", maybe.wink Even Mr Eaten now and then has encountered something unsuspected.

A large portion of this expedition's strategy involves deciding when to move between Troubled Waters 8–9 (Lashing Waves) and Troubled Waters 10 (Fury of the Unterzee). Certain cards are only available in one or the other, which means that crossing the border in either direction can empty your hand of dangerous cards and allow extra redraws. (This is the only way to discard cards in the Unterzee.)

However, Fury is much more dangerous. I am counting successful round trips to Fury as "Storms" now. Each visit risks a capsize.

The Stone Pigs Cough & Hardship and Want
(Second image is out of date on the wiki.)

For the entire year I've been zailing, I have had no way to bypass these cards. They are a 50% luck challenge, and if I fail, I am reduced all the way to Approaching Journey's End 5. Once in a blue moon, I draw both of these cards at once, and am forced to choose whichever cards show up in the third slot. This can spiral into very long stays in Fury and waste a lot of resources. Let's call this the Helvetica Scenario.

Meet my personal Scylla and Charybdis:

A Blank Space on the Charts & What Are Those?

These are the two Fury cards I prepared for before leaving. You can avoid the 50% luck challenge and turn them into a rather nice escape (-5 Troubled Water points) by expending, respectively, Partial Maps and Zee Ztories. These have battered me about many times, so I have run out of both resources. They are now just as dangerous as the cards above, and contribute to the Helvetica Scenario. If I ever draw any 3 Helvetica cards at once (max hand size is 3 at zee), I must attempt a 50% luck challenge. Success will be tallied as a Lucky Escape.

There is, however, a glimmer of hope that I had not accounted for before setting zail.

A Wily Zailor

This card grants +8 Approaching Journey's End (the best per action available), +4 Troubled Waters (A fairly worrisome chunk, but decent in terms of AJE:TW ratio), and +1 Zee Ztory. Every 20 times I use this card, I gain enough ztories to recover a "possible reprieve" — the ability to escape a Helvetica Scenario if one of the cards is What Are Those?

By Salt, what a journey! I'm continually impressed by your dedication, and occasionally I remember that you're doing this IN A ZUBMARINE and am impressed EVEN MORE.

When you're forced to choose a luck challenge, I vote that you go with The Stone Pigs Cough because the Zee could always use some more islands. Your volcanoes will blot out the sun! Or they would if we could see the bloody sun from here...

edit: when the waters are troubled, I say "What Are Those?" is the best choice. You'll at least put on a good show before the zee-beast swallows you, and every time I hear the card's title I'm reminded of that meme with the shoes.

Perhaps people more generous than I could donate some Fate to recompense you for the missed Exceptional Stories? I imagine Failbetter can’t make exceptions like this, for fear of the precedent it would set.

This passage is an outlier in the book. Most of it is his thoughts on literature, art, society, generally tearing apart the nonsense ways people talk about them and imbue them with false importance. His novel Pornografia (the only one I've read) is excellent if you like disturbing Eastern European literature.

Tree boughs crack and fall into the zee without a ripple. There is no air here, only a succulent vacuum that keeps my mind clear and my eyes pungent with pressure and rust.

I do not remember where my zubmarine went, or who sent this rowboat.

I open my hands — curved and wide as a qalupalik's rib, fingerless — and let the oars sink into the last open water. I strove so hard, once, forcing my way underneath the waves. This time will be easier. I slip down, down, and down. Then north once more, sliding through my doom, listening to a prison of ice above me groan as it fights the zee beneath it.
