What's the rarest item in the game? I'd say A Sealed Copy of the Crimson Book, since it sells for a ridiculous amount of money and it can only be found on a card at a certain time of the year.

Why is NiteBrite hoarding all the calling cards?
They were duplicated using a glitch, and Alexis stopped that and decided to give them to her (She was the second person to receive them?). Since Seeking is gone, there's probably nothing that can be done with them. edited by suinicide on 6/5/2016 The idea that I would hoard anything is somewhat ironic. Suinicide sums up the situation very well and succinctly. The text below is just me venting about about being accused of card hoarding and isn't super relevant to this topic which is why I put it in a spoiler box. It is not necessary to read this rant if you are here only to talk about rare items.
I had a well known advice for new characters post once, that recommended players take on a taboo or geis to add to the challenge and fun of playing the game. I don't mention mine very often because it could be used against me rather effectively, but I will speak it here this once since it is topical. My character NiteBrite must help anyone who requests her aid through the proper channels provided it is reasonably within her power to do so. There's some flexibility of interpretation here, and its possible to deceive even by only telling truths, but normally I play this straight and she helps everyone.
During Hallowmas 2013 I cyclically raised and slashed my stats in half seven times so that seven people could get the rare destins candle. I made and gave away like a dozen waxwails throughout my K&C career. Hallowmas and Christmas social organizing and noman emergency response are some relatively well known good works and public services I've been behind. I practically never refuse a social action, if someone has nightmares I will take them as my own, if they want dinner I will be an excellent host/guest.
Another recent example was a new player came to the IRC shortly before Christmas, crestfallen that, after crunching the numbers they found it was mathematically impossible for them to get the last handful of echos they needed to buy a four card lodging for the upgrade to a 5 carder. I converted four of my seven levels of Connected the Masters into first city coins for them and personally set them back on course. My whole career in Fallen London has been spent in the service of others, creating hope where before there was only tears. There's basically nothing I have that I would not let go of for a good cause or person, or just to help someone else because I can. And it's not just minor trinkets or heh, here's one second chance- no some of these things took literal months of my life to make and I gave it freely to others. There were even many cider owners before I had one, and yet I was the first to publicly and freely share sips with the masses.
The calling cards I have, I have as the result of a bug. Everyone else lost their bugged cards so I don't know why mine survived, but my theory is that at the time Fallen London didn't think I existed due to the Scorched by the Sun eaten fate content/bug. I was an ended/non-existent character who couldn't receive social actions properly from within Fallen London. It's possible this effect shielded the cards from being removed as they were removed manually. It's also possible Alexis just let me have them in a fit of good will/mercy; I don't know and its impossible to say. But the important thing to note here is that the card stopped being usable at the same time that seeking ended. The social action was removed, it was after all -the- social action which caused the end of SMEN. Passing card duplication was the primary bug that shutdown seeking for all these years.
But if I could pass the cards? Yes, I absolutely would. Even when I didn't know about the duplication, when I thought there was only one card in the entire game, I passed it on when I was no longer the best person to hold it- when others were more capable of finding lore I stepped aside and gave it up. Knowledge and community are so much more valuable than any physical possession or stat or quality. Finding lore and helping others is basically my reason for playing, even when that means letting go of all my possessions and material things. So to call me a hoarder in such a context, especially when intended as an insult is rather offensive to me. To say this means you know absolutely nothing about me or how I play.
edited by NiteBrite on 6/5/2016

If your going by ownership there's the cider. Only a select few have completed that grind. There are also a number of items that aren't available anymore. In that category I'm going to go with the Gilded Crustacian. To have that you would have had to have a dark carapcaced crustacian, have happened to have logged on for the brief wash of sunlight that happens only once a few years ago and I think only lasted an hour, and have happened to chose the option that did the transformation.

A complete mess, to be honest. Buggy. Rife with cheating. Not very narrative. There was a leaderboard, and crazy people fighting like rats in a sack to claw their way up it. The whole game was quite a bit less sophisticated at the time, and K&C was the very basic PvP end of it. But I think we did have echoes by then? I could well be wrong, the memory cheats.
Knife and Candle Mark I: My Part In Its Downfall: There was a gang who ganged up on people, I was in it. This understandably provoked a certain degree of ill-feeling, though there was no rule against it at the time. There actually weren't many rules governing original K&C at all, and it wasn't at all clear what constituted cheating, and eventually someone outside the gang gamed the system to such a spectacular extent that the whole thing got taken down. Which served us right, no doubt.
It was fun while it lasted. I don't think I could do it now, though. Not nearly crazy enough! I always mean to try the new version out. One day.
Looking forward to Seeking again, though. That was my other big thing I was crazy about, though I'd flounced over missing the time-limited Sunlight event by the time of Winking Isle. (True story: while the Sunlight thing was happening, I was sitting on the steps in the British Museum, recovering from having seen (a replica of) this for the first time. Funny old world. I suppose I shall never have a Gilded Crustacean now. But I met a Lion Man.)
Oh, and has anyone mentioned Exceptional Petals? Those were similar to Apples of Discord, only you got them for scoring in the top five on the leaderboard for the original Feast of the Exceptional Rose. You had to collect Admired, which was what we had before Making Waves. I was terrible at social action stuff, as indeed I still am, so I ground my way up there by clicking and clicking and clicking and clicking and clicking, like someone with too much time on their hands and not enough to do, as indeed I once was. And nudged poor old Iskandra out of her spot, if I recall.
I still think Apples should give you loads of Dreaded, and Petals... I dunno, Bizarre or Respectable? Either way, I don't think they're going to! And the hundreds of hours I must have spent clicking to get them! But I must have had fun at the time. And I made friends. Non, je ne regrette rien.

Primitive Hat Rubbery Associate Rubbery Conspirator Oh! How could we forget about the Apple of Discord? Back when Knife and Candle was closed for the first time, the Apple was rewarded to the top ten or five or ??? K&C players.
The associate and conspirator are rewards for support emails: http://echobazaar.wikidot.com/companions#toc5 Also mentioned above is Wolfie! Which the wikidot says (above) was for a few of the first players. As for the Primitive Hat, the wikia page leads to the wikidot page for Hats, which lists an item with the same description and art as the Primitive Hat, called the Persuasive Hat. Perhaps it was renamed? Anyways, the wikidot lists this as the source: "No longer available, a thankyou to the first five purchasers of virtual currency"
There's also Queer Parcels, Knot-names, and these. Which were part of a weird luck based christmas thing.
This is all what I can gather from old threads: Queer Parcels and Knot-names were available from paying the fate here: http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Mr_Sacks_stalks_the_streets_of_Fallen_London The sender got a Knot-name and the receiver a Queer Parcel. Knot-names could be used as a sort of second chance to preserve the Queer Parcel. (Read more here) edited by Erika on 6/5/2016

Thank you, imeja, for your take on the original incarnation of K&C.
The original K&C had a mechanic involving a test against your Shadowy as to whether your opponent could detect you within 15 minutes, REAL TIME, of your attempt to stalk and ultimately attack them. As imeja said, there was a public scoreboard; one was forbidden from attacking anyone who was not within 10 places higher or lower than oneself on the score board. Other stats (including Dangerous for likelihood of scoring a hit) were also involved but my memory as well as imeja's has faded.
I remember it became known that certain players had figured out how to reliably score hits on opponents no matter what those opponents did, though I did not know until today that imeja was one of them. I do believe that this discovery was one of the reasons FBG shut the original K&C down, and completely revised it into the form/s of K&C we had until recently.
I also want to thank imeja for the bit about Exceptional Petals. I was not aware of those (probably because I was never within 5 steps of the top of the leader board). That must be a nifty souvenir to have. Optimatum is correct: Apples of Discord went out to the top 30 players on the leader board at the time FBG ended the original K&C. I was somewhere around 26th, I think.

The old wiki says Apples of Discord were given to the top 30 plays, no clue if that's correct.

@Julius: Elemental Secrets have also been part of the reward packages for sundry Excellent Friend stories (which is not, strictly speaking, Fate content). They can also be gotten as Rare Successes in FQ expeditions. So, rare enough, but not more so than other items of that tier.

A few corrections. Exceptional Story seasonal tie-ins cost money to access, thus they are Fate-locked. Elemental Secrets cannot be obtained through rare successes in expeditions; they can be obtained through either Fate expedition with luck. Exceptional Stories become available via Fate three months later in theory though some suffered delays. Most Exceptional Stories pay out with one item or items with a collective worth of 62.5 echoes; Flint and the seasonal tie-one are the only ones to give 312.5 echo items.

I'd assume the absolute rarest items are those obtained from the Kickstarters, like whatever items or qualities are associated with the "only one person can ever get this" stories.
For the rarest non-fate-locked non-time-locked items, that's harder. Obviously it'd be something you can't keep in normal play (something added during a story and removed by the end of it) and I would guess it'd be part of one of the Ambitions (as a relatively small number of players get far into those and then suddenly stop progressing, plus only a quarter (roughly) of players are on each one.)
If I had to pick one from memory, it'd be "Drop of Gaoler's Honey", which is from fairly early on in Ambition: Nemesis, but late enough to screen out most people who are likely to abandon the game at the drop of a hat. And it potentially exists for only a single action, between when you acquire it and when you consume it.

Wait, how was the original K&C susceptible to gaming? I was under the impression it was fairly difficult to win consistently.
Well, we seemed to manage it! But you only had to win more often than you lost to gain points, and you'd rise over time. An Overgoat helped. I remember getting the worst of it when other people started to get them, I had to have a bit of a fire sale to afford one. And it helped if you knew which defensive strategy the person you attacked was using. Once you knew that, your mates were sure to beat them, at least until they got on and changed it. So it also helped to know what time they were likely to be online... and so on. The more mad you were, the higher you placed.
I don't think I understood how the eventual winner was doing it at the time, though I daresay it was explained to me. Farming alts for the slaughter, possibly. Whatever it was, it was thoroughly unsporting of them to cheat better than us! I seem to remember I placed second in the end, although only because they'd given me a boost by spamming me with failed attacks shortly before the curtain fell.

Time to bring this topic back, it seems. I was just scouring the older wiki to ensure the newer one has all the obscure old items, and I came across a reference to boots called Noise-Eaters. Supposedly there was only one pair in existence, which makes sense as I haven't been able to find a single other mention of them ANYWHERE. Does anyone have further details?
Also, anyone know what inventory category the four Queer Parcel items and the Crumbled Remnant fall into? edited by Optimatum on 1/23/2017

If you count as extinct any item that is on an acount that has not been logged into for more then a year, and any item that has gone through the gate...
... I think quite a few of the rarest items are thus, extinct.
I suspect the golden crustation, no matter how common it might have been at the time, is gone now.

Noise-Eaters, huh? Keep in mind that it’s a wiki, so it may in fact not be real. Nevertheless, that does seem like the kind of description FBG writes…
It definitely exists.
As for the four Parcel items they should still be curiosity.

It does! Don't think there is a in-game source for it, though.
Back on topic, there's the Amber Carnival Token: Glowing mote which will allow you early entrance to the Carnival. Visit your Lodgings to use.
This is the message back then, before the Carnival was open for business:
"The Carnival will be opening around the end of March. But if you're lucky enough to have an Amber Carnival Token, you can get an early pass..."
Thing's on sale for 100 Fate. Ouch. Word is that it exchanges for a truly pitiful amount of tickets nowadays, too! Less than fifty, I heard. edited by Estelle Knoht on 1/23/2017

Apparently it was also obtained through a social media contest.

Gilded Crustaceans are not quite extinct yet! I'm not sure who else owns them, but I bet there are a few others as well.

Cheers, I'd completely forgotten the mechanics. And Watchful was tested against their Shadowy to hunt them down, surely. That's why an Overgoat was the must-have edge for a while. I was pretty good cos I was pretty crazy, but I got gradually ground down until I got one.

Now that Seeking is back, do you still have those Calling Cards, NiteBrite? And do they work again?
I'm not asking for you to pass them to me (I don't have a use for them yet and I would just hoard them), but I'm curious if they work.

Re: Echoing--Echoing was a feature of the game from when I started (can't speak to what happened before that) though I don't think K&C generated material that one could echo; it was content-poor, as imeja said. Originally, one could get rewards by echoing one's FL activities to Twitter (and originally that was the only way to access the game); Failbetter invented the Journals when it became clear that Echoing every last move to Twitter was annoying more people than it was attracting new players. :-)

Wait, how was the original K&C susceptible to gaming? I was under the impression it was fairly difficult to win consistently.
