The grind of keel against shingle announces the ferry boat. The Boatman does not greet you.
The Family Ties Season has finished. If you played the Frequently Deceased, the Seven-Day Reign and the Pentecost Predicament, you will have gained an item unique to each tale. You can trade in these items to unlock a short tale suffused with lore and adorned with an alluring reward.
This option opens today, and will remain permanently, so there is no need to trade in your items by any deadline.
The story can be found anywhere in London. Bask in it.
I was obligated to take the option saying that I wouldn't dream of obligating the Boatman to do something he didn't want to do, because of course I wouldn't dream of obligating the Boatman to do something he didn't want to do! So we had a nice chat, and I learned some interesting and pleasant things. And he gave me a nice little present, which was jolly kind.
Really enjoyed this. I took the hard path and stared steely eyed into the abyss. I let the forger off the hook that one time and its haunted me ever since.
Big thanks to RandomWalker for echoing the other path though. There's some really interesting lore down both tracks. This is one of those situations that makes me really tempted to get EF on an alt account.
Does anyone have any clue who the boatman was referring to when you ask him about family? Somebody 'close to' the Boatmen who's preaching what sounds like the Liberation of Night? Because I'm drawing a blank at who that could mean. Did the Thief-of-Faces join the revolutionaries when I wasn't looking?
If it helps, the text makes very clear that you are not dying and are a rare living passenger on the boatman' ferry. Since you don't die, that probably wouldn't disqualify you from returning to the surface.

From the text unlocked with Boatman's Opponent, it seems to just be a nod to the Boatman being acquainted with you.

So I was very rude with one alt, insisting that I go as close as possible to the shore, and my main had a fascinating chat with the boatman.
Delightful. The reward for being rude is harder to come by than the reward for being pleasant, but both routes have value.

I am getting addicted to those trade-in short stories. Each of them is a concentrated thrill. Lovely idea!

Will the family ties stuff come to the Fate page? Will it replace something else, like Heart's Blood?
Do you mean the individual stories?
If so, they will eventually come up on the Fate page. I think each EF story comes up on the Fate page around three months after it's release, but - so far - Fate stories remain Fate stories and don't become free . . . so you can probably expect this latest story around August time. (Edit: I just spotted someone else say it's five months after release, so the time may be longer than I expressed).
If you mean this extra item trade-in storylet, then no. It'll only unlock once you buy all three stories in the season, at which point it should - I'm led to believe - automatically appear to you without extra cost. edited by RobinMask on 6/5/2016

I've just played this, and I very much enjoyed it. I'd like to draw attention to something else that hasn't been commented on, though: in two occasions I saw an action's result that was actually a storylet, where the message about the alteration of a quality appeared right above the branches to be followed next. I've never seen before storylets and results fused like this; has anyone else? It might be a bug, or an experiment of some sort.

Playing the Family Ties trade-in was very in-character for my main, but I was disappointed in the non-text part of the reward:
It was a Starstone Demark. I already had two of them; now I have three of the blasted things! They are too hard to come by for me to want to sell them, but they're not unique either! Arrgh...
The text, as always, was splendid, and the information therein tantalizing (pun intended!). edited by cathyr19355 on 6/2/2016

Do you have journal echoes for each route? I'm likely to be polite, but I'm curious what awaits on the far shore.
And in terms of sheer mechanical value, are the rewards similar? I don't particularly care about the monetary value if its just something you'd sell, but I'd hate to miss out on an otherwise limited companion or other unique item like that.

Umm, D___ but I'm torn. My character has never met the Boatman. So, while I really want the cool stuff, I don't know that I can do that. I'm oddly proud of the fact that Absimiliard has no clues about anything where the Boatman is involved, this would make them far more clueful.
