Yes! As you've noticed, we've just added new tags to some items in Fallen London. When you hover over an item in your inventory, you might now see the usual description prefaced with [Commonplace] or [Rare], for example. We wanted to give more indication of how convenient items are to obtain - that way, it's easier to decide whether you want to sell or hang onto them.
We've grouped items into five broad categories: Commonplace, Scarce, Coveted, Rare, and Precious. These categories don't indicate the item's price, but how difficult it is to acquire them. 'Commonplace' items can be easily acquired from repeatable storylets, for example, while 'Scarce' ones may require item conversion or other effort.
A couple of points:
- Currently, there are very few 'Precious' items in the game.
- In a few cases, items may be classified as more obtainable than they currently are - that's an indicator we intend to make these items more available in the future.
- We may expand this functionality in the future, but wanted to test it first.

This is a pretty nifty update, but I'm having a really hard time getting the adjectives sorted in my head. I would have thought that a coveted object is more rare than a 'rare' object, and maybe more rare than a precious object. My trouble with it is that there are three adjectives that describe rarity (commonplace, scarce, and rare) and two that describe quality (coveted and precious), and I tend to think of the former as having high quality for a lot of people and the latter as having high quality for the individual. E.g., my (nonexistent) fancy car is coveted; my niece is precious. Using adjectives like 'uncommon' or 'singular' or 'irreplaceable' instead of 'coveted' and 'precious' would make much more sense to me.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the first sentence of the rat of glory description calls it "The rare and coveted Rat of Glory" when both those rarities exist, but it is classified as neither? =P

Also I am suppressing the urge to make a list of things that _don't_ have labels yet, on the ground that FGB ought to have automated tools to tell them that and therefore it would be a waste of time, but my completist self is _itching_ with the desire to.

One additional label I'd like to see is "Limited", indicating that something is only available a limited number of times or can even only be obtained once. This would be irrespective of value or usefulness. Early on I spent 2/3 case notes writing a story, because I assumed that case notes were a commonplace item, not a rare thing you can only obtain three of ever. Some of us are collectors and don't want to sell off special items like that.

Can't thank you enough for this update
It's one I wish was in place sooner, as I've sold some stuff in my early days that I later regretted, but I think it could still be insanely useful even now. It'll be a godsend for new players, too, as it's always tricky knowing what to sell and what to keep
I think the terms might do with improving, though? 'Commonplace' and 'Rare' are fine enough, but 'precious', 'coveted' and 'scarce' all seem very relative and a bit ambiguous . . . unless a new player finds this thread in the forum, they might assume that 'rare' is more than 'previous', or that 'coveted' is the rarest. Just my opinion, though, as others may disagree.

Now what I want to know is the rarity of a Ratty Reliquary. Anyone here lucky enough to grab one?
(On a slightly unrelated note, I find it interesting that Judgement's Eggs and Vital Intelligence were available through the the charity bundle but not the Christmas bundle.)

It does, however, make sense to me that Impossible Theorem and Master's Blood are marked as more common than the other Tier 8 items- the others are card-based and in direct competition with each other. Also, the disparity you're observing isn't as significant when you account for value- is an Impossible Theorem really that much harder to get than 625 Unearthy Fossils would be? Aside from selling the Cave of the Nadir location, Master's Blood is card-based as well, even if said cards can be forced. But I'd say it's definitely rarer than Coveted considering that, if converting Airag into Tears, you pay an additional 625 echoes in lost Airag value on top of the 7 Notability and value of the Tears. Similarly, the Impossible Theorem costs almost twice its monetary value in Searing Enigmas, even ignoring the 100 echo and Searing Enigma fine on failure.

The Rat of Glory is also Precious.
Judgment's Eggs are currently only available through a single path in Flint (and were previously very rarely obtained from the charity and Christmas Fate bundles). The expedition you're thinking of provides a Silent Soul, a less valuable item.

Whoa! So what we need to do now is figure out which items are labeled as "less precious" than they currently should be, and we'll be able to piece together what content is to come!
I'd already assume, based on how the Element of Dawn is merely "rare", that we'll likely be getting grindable content relating to the New Sequence!

I think a Mountain Sherd is also available simply by playing Flint. I agree that most of these terms are distributed in a confusing way. Example: all top tier wines are "equaly" Coveted (Airag, Tears of the Bazaar, and Master's Blood).
Another Precious item: Fragment of the Tragedy Procedures

It's interesting that these rarities are quite irregular. Low level items can be scarce, high level items can be commonplace and some things that I'd class as precious are "merely" rare.
I wonder if this is purely informational or if there would be a mechanical aspect to this.
