I had to practice my comic skills, so I though "why not make this practice a comic-journal of my chracter's adventures in Fallen London"? Lots of madness start with a "why not".
These comics are as spoiler-free as I can make them, and with as little as possible actual quotes of the game. The anatomy is not shining because it's just practice. The comics do get better as I finally pin a face model for Professor Strix. I'll post 'em as I make 'em.

Last for today, just to get that "prologue" out of the way. And yes, my Surly Bat talks. Just about everything talks in Fallen London. Give me this one. One day, you might discover why she is so happy to get to Fallen London. Today is not the day.

My illustrious patrons, Added Space, Andrew Ashterston, HOBNAIL and Estelle Knoht, respectively.
If they don't feel like killing me for drawing them incorrectly in my cartoonish and sloppy style. (Those characters belong to them. And Failbetter, I suppose.)
That's how I got Persuasive 100, really. Getting help from other players. I will spice it with a little roleplaying so I won't disappoint

Note 1: I couldn't draw Hobnail because I'm not good at Surrealist drawings. Sorry. Note 2: At first, I planned to pm all the patrons to ask them if they liked the drawings, blah, blah, but then I decided that I wanted to make them a nice surprise. If any of you has corrections to suggest on you character's appearance, pm me and I'll fix it. Note 3: That happened more-or-less when I was posting strips for around two weeks. Which means... I'm FINALLY illustrating things from one month ago! Yay! On the bright side, my life in the game has been a looooong grind in the last weeks, so I suppose that I'll catch up quicker.

A little interlude about pets. Will make another (and thanks a lot to Johnny Felix for the Parabola Kitten. It's adorable and I'll include it in the next pet interlude).
Now the bat has a name. I couldn't keep calling it "you" for the whole game. And I got the salt weasel in one of my first days playing. I tend to be luckier than it's good for me. It's taking me ages to grind my stats.

Of course "Strix van Allen" is not the good professor's true name. The thought! She is an escapeé of New Newgate. It would be foolish to keep her old name. Not that she hasn't tried.

Next comic, back to the main path of the comic, after a leghty detour to pick my alt profile for the ride. Some details missing will be dealt with as the story goes. I'll say in advance that he will keep the name 'Derek', since he got used to it and that the sulky bat that he used to 'possess' is alive and well, just way less smart and prone to human talk.
You can send social actions to him here: http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/Derek~Davis Seriously, this jobless freeloader does not have enough connection for any job. Tsk tsk tsk. Now things got real. You will either get a little more confused, or a little more enlightened by this development, depending on wheter you found the clues or not.
The Curious Capitain is Absimiliard, with their cosmogone spectacles. They are supposed to have indistinct gender, but the hard truth is that all my characters have roughly the same face, you can only distinguish between male and female based on the hair and chest. No, seriously. Cover the Professor's bun and tell me she doesn't look like a man. Basically, my characters are whatever I tell you they are, because anathomically, they could be anything.
Speaking of which, I know that bats don't sleep like that, but this scene is cute and I will not change it.
You now have 1x Human Derek (Alternate Profile). What mysterious and complicated backstory he could possibly have? (I will not link to his profile yet. Wait until he regains his conscience more fully, enough to tell his story, and then you can interact with him.)
I am really enjoying these comics. Yes, both this page and the next are purely RP. Fallen London loses half of its shine without RP.

Sorry for disappearing for a while, it was that time of the term in which I have to grade tons and tons of student's exams [[in game and IRL, to be honest]]. One more page to wrap Feducci's storylet and we can move on to other things.

[[Now that the whole background+motives are out of the way, I would like to add some notes on this: I have based this more on vampire folklore than vampire literature. You know, originally, vampires were more closely related to ghosts than zombies. You couldn't destroy a vampire any more than you can destroy a ghost. You could banish them from your house, and, if you staked them, you could pin them to their casket. Other than that, if you had a vampire infestation in your neighbourhood, tough luck.
Vampires were the spectres of people who died on violent circunstances (usually murder or suicide), some legends adding that they had to be buried in crossroads to be back as vampires (what's the deal with crossroads, anyway? Around here, people say that crossroads are where you go to make deals with the devil). Sometimes, they would act as ghosts, entering closed spaces, sitting on people's chests as they sleep, being impossible to kill, etc. Sometimes, they would be solid, almost human, but not quite. They were soulless, the "hollow husk of a person" kind of soulless, and, despite the resemblance to their former selves, they wouldn't speak like live people. You could see it wasn't quite the person you once knew.
At first, I would adhere more strictly to those folkloric references minus the "soulless" part (she would get her soul back by killing the spirifer and the devil doing the deal), but I decided to include a way to perma-kill vampires to give the Professor a little hope of dying in peace someday. I half-borrowed this way from Dracula, half from folklore: you first bless the vampire's tomb, so they can't reform there when they die, and THEN you destroy them. Which is complicated further in Professor's Strix case, since the closest that she had to a "tomb" was the dust in a abandoned road, and dust doesn't exactly stay fixed in the same place.
As a bonus fun fact, I didn't name her "Professor Strix" just because my DA nickname, but because "strix" is the name of a Roman owl-creature that sucks blood. Meaning that I didn't REALLY try to hide her nature at all.]]

I was wondering about that Roman owl reference. . As for crossroads, I remember reading once upon a time that the reason the bury souls there was because they would get lost. (A more sophisticated answer is that crossroads were considered ambiguous places, due to meeting of the roads. Because of that, they are considered in western folklore to be one of the places were the spiritual world touches the ordinary - that's why you can meet the devil or shake a ghost there.)

The words "strega" (and variations), which means "witch", and "strigoi" (and variations), which means "vampire" both come from the root "strix". That's how I came accross the word at first. I was researching on vampires for a book. Another intersting thing is that "taking a vampire character that were initially menacing and turning him into a hopeless sappy romantic" was a Victorian thing. They did it to Lord Ruthven (the first vampire in prose), more than 100 years before Twilight. The poor things were doomed from the start.

Continue...
It is not like I was trying too hard to hide it. There were plenty of hints.
And no, it's not a crossover between Bram & Vlad and Fallen London (as much as I would LOVE to do it). It's just that, after years of researching medieval vampire folklore, I decided to do something with that knowledge. I will explain things better on part 2. For now, since it may be a little while until I finish it, I just want to point out that I became a perfectly normal person as soon as I reached the Neath. No need to be nervous around me in salons.

I being a complete and utter self-centered creature would love to see Dirae Erinyes as well. Perhaps if we send the good professor enough fate. . .
I suppose it would be a good opportunity to explain this, because it's something that people ask me a lot in-game:
The comics are just a small thing I do when I have some free time in the week, a way to remind old adventures and the occasional crazy headcanon that I develop in certain situations. I always have a rough storyline for the next few strips planned, so I won't get blocked as to what to draw next, but that's all.
Other people appearing in the comic has much more to do with roleplaying in the social interactions than gifts. It's very hard to me to introduce a random person without having roleplayed with their creator to understand the character better and how our characters could work out together. I decided to include people from the forum as cameos every time I need a random character for the Professor to interact with, or just someone at the background doing something funny.
The thing is, since I will disappear occasionally when I have much to do irl, if you give me expensive gifts asking for a spot in the comic, it will make me guilty when I can't reciprocicate any time soon. A player suggested me once to use comic spots as a way to trade for items and even fate, and it would be all fine and dandy if I didn't have this "real life calls, can't draw for a while" thing going on. I don't mind drawing things for free in my own pace, but having people paying for them when I can't deliver is too serious for me. I will accept any gift as a kindness, without strings attached, and if I ever draw you randomly, it doesn't mean that you have to send me anything in game.
tl;dr: Unless a player was vital on some part of my gameplay (like the patrons), and unless we have some roleplaying that had enough funny moments for me to use easily, cross the fingers and wait for cameos in the comic, casting calls for when I need lots of characters at once and/or sketch dumps (like the one with the pets). I will try to draw as many people as I can, but it maaaay take a while.

My dear friends (I would say delicious, as is the tradition, but I feel disconcerted with this word because of past traumas), I'm overwhelmed by your kindness in game, and counting my resources so I can offer you something nice in return. If I haven't returned you a calling card/social action/present, be sure that I will soon. Thank you so much.
An now, for that solemn moment in which you choose your Ambition. It took a lot of time, because no one seemed too attractive. I would do a prank, since today is April Fools, but no prank can top reality:

I haven't even considered Ambition: Nemesis. Too OoC.
Stupid Persuasive quests that try to force you into someone's pants. None of the people I tried to charm ended our relationship particularly charmed. In the Intrigue: the Curate and his Sister, there's a point in which you spend the night with the Curate (what the hell, people). My headcanon is that we spent all night talking about some obscure theology point until I fell asleep by his side. He felt so insulted by this that he pretended to not remember me during the Vake hunt. But my Persuasive increased anyway, so who cares.

It is a blatant excuse to draw lab equipment. Because I am a chemist and I will take any opportunity to draw lab equipment.
The thing she is distilling is Feducci's blood. The "stones" are chunks of amber, one of them being used as a pendullum. [Since I don't know if it count as spoilers, I won't explain why the amber is necessary for this distillation, but I suppose it won't make much of a difference in the story.]
Anyway, stages of grief properly conquered, it is time for a dinner with a certain gentleman, who gifted her a certain feline. Then we get to The Next Mystery.

[[Things are finally getting back to normal. The Professor is almost becoming an Extraordinary Mind in game and she is not even a POSI yet in the comics. Tsc, tsc, Strix. Get your butt to work.]]
After all this time, you can finally release your breath: the bat which Derek's soul was "possessing" is fine, and as sulky as ever. He doesn't feel compelled to use human speech anymore, but he will still occupy his spot at the Professor's shoulder. It's his spot.

Fun fact: Derek is working as a journalist for the Professor's newspaper, but I don't think he will want to pursue this career further until he becomes a Correspondent. I still have no idea which advanced profession he would have.
Fun fact 2: I just noticed that I forgot to get back and draw the Professor's tie in almost all frames. Eh, I'll leave them like that for now.

Nothing gives you the right to kill her, but there's simply no guarantees that she will keep living as a statue. Or, worse, that she won't be trapped there for all eternity, aware but unresponsive. There are fates worse than final death, my friend. And some of them do start as good intentions. Others just start horrible and get worse. I know one or two things about those.

I did the absconding devil back when my English was bad and I didn't understand. Back then, I warned him... Don't ask me why anymore. Now, as I know the language better, I simply let them go. Every single case leaves the answer open and would open questions. Expect the detective, but every other is ambiguous. In case you are wondering how long ago those comics happened, now you have the answer:

[[OOC: I"ve been playing FL since January, but I was incredibly busy until the beggining of March, making my progress almost stagnant. It didn't help that grinding in the Flit is so action-consuming. Right now, I'm grinding Shadowy by preparing for a burglary, but selling the information to the Constables AND doing that MADDENING grind to investigate University and raise my "Featured in the Tales of University". It will take a while until I do anything of interest again, so the comics will most likely catch up with "present day" soon.]]

Of course, it's not just exactly 100. "A sign?" is 96+, and the quality goes to ... 127? It doesn't seem to me like it rolls that high. That would be 32/128=25%, and I should be getting one or two on every expedition. I am now getting about one every six expeditions, maybe. So perhaps it's actually 5/100 now, and I should be getting one every three?

By estimation, you are currently my 6th most self-pitying protege, so you are doing fine! It is not like self-pitying is a bad thing though, makes for entertaining reading. Sometimes, people's self-confidence shatters simply from receiving an offer of patronage. (I liked the guy, though.)
You won't get any respect either if you frame someone who coughs and cannot even speak for nonsensical reason anyway.
Let's see - if you are into the Provost, accusing him probably set a good, honest foundation for any relationship. (He is still willing to boink you even if you accuse him of murder!)
The Principal is of course happier if you accuse the Provosts. If she is willing to pick up an undignified burst of speed just to one-up him, accusation of murder is probably just as good.
Your fellow academics aren't stupid and know if you are just picking an easy target. It's been a complex case and the info would have been useful for the departments as well. Don't feel bad; it could have been worse. edited by Estelle Knoht on 5/30/2016

Flying Lizard ("Calango Voador" in Fallen London) is a friend IRL, and the one who dragged me to Fallen London. He was my first acquintance in game and roleplays as a Russian spy. He is always promising he will join the forums, maybe someday he will. I needed an accomplice for the duel storylet, and at this point he was the only one in my acquitances that would qualify.
About the situation in the comic: I slayed a terrifying spider monster and that somehow was enough to qualitfy me for a secret society of people who duel for permanent death. OK. Oh, and brace yourselves. We are going to dwell on the good Professor's past beggining on the next comic.

Almost there. Almost there. I'm almost getting to present day! Come on, Professor, draw faster! Five or so comics and we get there!
Drake is singing the "Dies Irae" part of Mozart's Requiem. To those not up to your Latin, it roughly means:
Wrath day, that day, In which the centuries will crumble to ashes So testify David and Sibyl. How much fear will be then, When the Judge come, To judge sternly everything.
It's one of my favourite songs, and it seems fitting to finally face the Vake. The complete darkness that descend upon you when you sip the Black Wings Absinthe Noveau is a little worringly, though. I might have to start reading labels before drinking unknown beverages.

A quick summary of the things I was grinding in the background as I fought the Black Ribbon: making the term pass at University to solve the crimes there, gathering clues on the Garden through His Amused Lordship, grinding the requirements to meet the Duchess and buying my first Exception Story, "The Soul Trade". This watch makes me a shepherd of souls for the C. V. R. The theme of the next strips is me getting Persuasive enough to enter the Court and become a Person of Some Importance, and a little thing about mirrors and lost souls.
Oh, and patrons. Coming next. It may take a while for me to get them right.

You were! With your permission, I want to bring you back for other comic, at the end of the Persuasive arc. Estelle will appear again somewhere in the middle, as will Andrew. Since I make relatively few comics, considering how much content FL has, I can't put many cameos by people in the forums, but I'll try to make them every time I can.
(Since it is a FAQ, yes, I do have a loose storyline planned to "tie" all my interactions in game, but it's a short one because I want those comics to stay as casual as I can make them. When this storyline ends, I'll probably start another, that may or may not be related to rp in game.)

Have you considered contacting Mr Hearts, Professor? I'm sure the meat-minded Master would be most interested in your predicament, both the immortality and recapturing your ability to die. Then again it is also said to be the most flirtatious of Masters, so perhaps disregard my suggestion. Either way I can understand the hatred for spirifers alot more now. And here I was thinking you merely found the Soul Trade distasteful!

Last one with pools of blood, I promise. In the next comics, I will finally draw my patrons. It turns out that having a gentle soul to help you raise your stats before you go flirting in Court (and failing disastrously) is a good idea. Who would know.

[[And duelling Feducci is a great way to get Dangerous 100. I use my Rough Gown for a boost in dangerous in-game, but, when I drew the comic, Professor Strix DARED me to draw her fighting in a dress. I decided it would be wiser not to do it.
About the eyes: just to up a little the risk factor to her (and make the story more fun to roleplay), every time her wounds rise too much, she starts reverting to the sorry state she was in Surface. If she dies in Fallen London, until she can get back from the Boat Man, her body will most probably go on a blood hunt. If she ever dies, don't let her in. (That would be the outcome of her fight with Feducci if she had lost the duel.)]]

That's witty, the owl. I totally missed it. The only thing that even briefly occurred to me was the way in which it felt coeval to strega. (Almost certainly because strega comes from it, but I'm afraid I don't really know the derivation and am merely guessing.)

I could sketch a new comic. Or I could draw pets. Those are/were my pets. Some of them might have been sold for profit/died horribly already. I'm not including Lucky Weasels because I neve had one for long, I don't know why. They simply disappear, for a reason or other, and I don't grow attached to them. Breed stocking was not included, either, because my head canon is that I kept them in the Labyrinth of Tigers until ot was Theological Husbandry time.

From left to right: Roy, a Reprehensible Lizard; Drake, the Half-Wild Mandrake; Linda, the Salt Weasel; Spotty, the Grubby Kitten (who is all grown up, it's been two years in game since I got her); Bessie, the Parabolan Kitten (I didn't put a mirror to show her panther side, sorry); Derek, the Sulky Bat; Donna, the Bat with Attitude; Zorro, the Disgraced Rattus Faber Bandit-Chief; Lola, the Albino Rat; Chad, the Talkative Rattus Faber; Dreamy the Cheerful Goldfish and St. Michael, the Hound of Heaven.
Also not featured: my flock of messenger bats, and a tank of more disposable fishes I keep for Rubbery guests. And some pets seem off-scale because they aren't forming a line. Some are closer to the "camera", others are more distant. I thought it would be obvious, but it never hurts to remember.

If you are veeeeeeeeeeery patient, you can grind for trade secrets, spend some hastly scrawled notes, chase cats and look for an invisible eminence as a patron. If you are exceptionally lucky, you can get an inspiration card, too, to help you break the 100 barrier and become a person of some importance. After that, it depends on what your ambition in the game is, really.

Eminences are rare because the game is very Watchful-oriented (3 out of 4 Ambitions require it, the biggest revelations come from Watchful storylines and the game has a big focus on mysteries). People then move on to Legendary Charisma (because not many games let people specialize in charm). Shattering Force is an attractive choice after this because Nemesis and Bag a Legend is about killing, and the game already has a lot of murders.
And beyond that, Eminences are in perpetual high demand with no shortcut grind like other stats so they seem even rarer. Legendary Charisma are the most obsolete as patron.
Generally speaking, the best way to grind Shadowy is to partner up with someone and do nothing but swapping Shadowy notes for a week or two. But once you get the Jack-of-Smile case, you can accept the case and enjoy grinding Shadowy with faction cards (5 action for 20 CP). You just need to never cash in your progress until you are ready.

I'm almost catching up with my currently state on the game. Almost. Almost! Hnnnngh! Just a few more comics on Vake hunting + a few business in Watchmaker's Hill for 100 in Dangerous and boom! This comic may explain how I went to New Newgate as a prisoner (again) in the trail of the Vake, when I DO have enough Constables connections and detective creed to go there, you know, for legitimate reasons. And, of course, I wouldn't clout an innocent man in the Palace. A PERVERT man in the Palace, on the other hand...
[comic]
[/comic]
And now I'm thinking about how to implement that. Maybe add a "A Just Worker for the Constables"(name pending) quality, which keeps you from leaving the prison and switches up the cards to some interrogations and stuff to replace the usual prison routine?

I suppose it could be an one-time event for the Vake ambition. If you have the right amount of Connected: Constables, Steadfast and a low enough Criminal Record, instead of going to "regular" New Newgate, you go to a "not-a-prisioner" New Newgate, with cards and storylets regarding interrogation and interactions with prisioners, plus the Vake content. You can go away from this area when you complete the snuffer quest and, once you leave, you never return there. Kind of the Dark Abyss moment, a little later.

It's not particularly unreasonable, even in the event you learn the deeper purpose of the Soul Trade. Some people will always sell their souls for a diamond big enough to feed an entire street for a year, so eradicating the trade is pointless. The point is, reaping soul from people who isn't even able to say no is something universally reviled, regardless of what you think of Hell or what they want to do with your souls.

I am really enjoying these comics. It warms my heart to see there are still (somewhat) honest Londoners roaming the streets, helping us rat catchers protect the innocent from rats, thwarting devils and spirifers and only occassionally mugging someone in a dark alley. Keep up the good work Professor! I can't say I agree with everything you did though, as I sided with the Spirifer over the Pianist for both characters. I felt sorry for the guy once I got to know more about him and I'm not trusting a devil's word of honour for a second.

@Vavakx: I always think about getting a raven advisor, but I already have a bat advisor, and I don't think they will get along well. The last thing I need is two advisors arguing on my shoulders.
@Hark: Some experiences can be done with as little as a sip, but if I do want to advance my research, I might need more. *sigh* Let's grind the echoes and hope for the best.

I have two doctorates in Chemistry. TWO. I was a professor in freaking Oxford! I can melt just about anything they keep in that place and then distillate it into an ingredient for Mr. Wines. Just because they changed Chemistry's name to Infernal Rarefactions or something, I'm suddenly not elligible for professorate. Shameful!

I like these comics. It's fun to remember the early storylines. It reminds me of when my character was another new face in London who didn't have any worries beyond a rat home invasion. My how things have changed since they got into the late game.

You make some very good points. I left her be, and sometimes I wonder how she's doing: has she become a Clay Woman, forever to be with her beloved? Is she still trapped in that statue, her green eyes forever bricked away behind stone? Sometimes I think I should've smashed her instead.
(OOC: I chose to leave her, for different rp reasons. To my character, smashing her felt like playing god with her life, and they decided that they'd rather leave someone to a potentially terrible fate than play god, which may or may not be questionable ethics. Failbetter Games made a blog post about it too: http://www.failbettergames.com/dissecting-the-comtessa/ . This makes me think of the conclusion of the Absconding Devil case, when the Bleary Entertainer asks you "What gives you the right to decide other peoples' lives?". I really wish you had the option to say, "Nothing. I don't have that right.")
