On the other hand, I think I've got 20 possible kinds of grind left ahead of me...
First I think I better grind my stats up, though possibly I can manage one of the other 19 grinds while doing that.
Would somebody please help inspire me so I don't give up on this game?

Fallen London's seventh anniversary is coming and it will be here very soon. How many 7s have you prepared? Everyone needs to have 7 of at least one item, and we need to cover every item. I'm talking 7 M______B____'s, 7 impossible theorems, 7 key's to the brass embassy, shoot we even need someone to have 7 eyeless skulls. Actually luminosity items are probably a must to have 7 of for the celebration. Everyone lets get 7 of all the luminosity items its possible to get and branch out from there. It's probably a good idea to get 7 of at least one of the tier 7 items.
Time is running out, we only have until January 11th, 2017 to prepare. A multiple of 7 anniversary in a 7 containing year won't come happen again until the 63 anniversary in 2073, and a similar 7/7 anniversary to this one won't be until the 77th anniversary in 2087. If you need something to do, aid the cause and grind 7 of a thing, it doesn't really matter what that thing is as long as its 7. Have 7 already? Pick a different thing and get 7. Have more than 7? Sell. Sell it all. Even your stats are too high. Burn the stats down until only 7s remain. There is so much to do, and yet so very little time.

Goat Grinding is an overall useful thing to do. I've been keeping up interest by grinding up certain qualities. If you want to pursue a goat at the same time, perhaps pick a quality grind that provides an income, rather than consuming resources. Perhaps working on a Newspaper or becoming an even more masterly thief or duelist.

PtPT: the Drownies is a quality received from a rare card that can be drawn during the easier repeatable heist, the card can raise it to level 2, and then you need to dump lacre buckets into the river for a rare success for the remaining 3 cp for level 3 I think. The quality itself only unlocks a little option on a nadir card and one destiny option, and you don't need to get it for level 3, but people due it just for the heck of it.
Also, since quite a few "out of content" posts have been appearing lately, does anyone want to make a master list of obscure grinds/goals/etc.?

Forgive the newbie question (from a citizen of the early Republic, as it were, looking in on the last days of the Roman Empire).
What is "The Ambition of which we do not speak?" Do tell.
Please feel free to communicate by PM if the issue is too explosive. Jermion is a careful soul and would hate to choose badly.

I think this thread might be of interest to you: Things for a maxed out Londoner to do
Also what a lot of players do is maybe find an obsession suitable for their character and try to outperform most in one thing: Acknowledgeable Achievements and Accoutrements
Personally I think FL is a great interactive sandbox game. So yeah, role play and storytelling is kind of the attraction for me. I currently have 6 characters and I explore quite different choices...

One of the rules of fallen london is you can change the world more than the normal man on the street, but you aren't a god, and you can't change the world that much.
That said, they are more-than-capable of making a satisfactory conclusion to each and every ambition, though some of them are going to be problematic if they intend playing to still be possible at the end. Heart's desire is fine, as is, most likely, the light fingers ambition. However, the other two would both impact the masters substantially if you truly, properly, succeed- though an incomplete victory might leave the world similar enough that the world wouldn't change that much at the level you play at.
Vake hunter failing to actually defeat the vake, but horribly handicapping him- perhaps even injuring him so badly he can no longer go and vake- leaves the setting satisfactory. it's not a complete victory, but it's a large one, a huge one considering what you are.
Nemisis causing all kinds of chaos for the bazaar but failing to win in the end is much the same- if it's not an immediate enough harm, it could leave the world the same and still change the world.
Admittedly, i don't know the details of light fingers, and therefore don't know what to fear about it.

The main thing keeping me coming back is Exceptional Stories, and the far rarer new free stories.
I do also grind echoes for goats, which are a nice prestige item, and needed for some of the extreme watchful content. Scraps can also be ground for some fun extremely expensive items (such as the Breath of the Void.) and wine can also be ground for other valuable and singular items. It's ultimately all just stockpiling until the (hopeful) introduction of more endgame-tier content, like continuation of the Ambitions, traveling to the Elder Continent, etc. I suppose I'll eventually become less interested if that content never really materializes, but I'll still play at least once a month for exceptional stories.

Right. Inspiration. I'm kind of needing it as well, and I'd say that getting involved in RP is the best thing to do. Another thing could be to not necessarily play it every day. The grinds are fairly dull, and it's quite easy to lose interest in it, so only coming back to it every now and again will hopefully alleviate that. Finding a singular obsession to grind for as MirrorHouse suggested might be an alright way of doing it. You could even start an alt or two, were you so inclined. And finally, I don't know whether you've stumbled across the Ambition of which we do not speak, but that certainly kept me interested for a good while, even though it is fairly short.

Now, the things I'm thinking of as things I might grind towards.
1. A second goat. An Uber Goat. A HeptiGoat. Cider. 2. Couriers Footprint. (course, this requires changing job and getting the ivory telescope, real money, but...) 3. Max all 4 stats. 4. Captain level 12 (just go to zea and back over and over, possibly with map turn in to make them shorter) 5. Every connection to 100 (I'm about halfway) 6. Gold Serpentine 7. All possible housing. 8. Notability 15 9. A second master's blood (As I am trading this one for crimson book) 10. Melancholy 15 (Via Tears of the bazaar next winter) 11. Wedding of max return (including letter) 12. Complete collection of short stories. 13. Newspaper specalizations to 12 14. Blemington 15. All possible rewards from turning in scrap to the relicier. 16. Max The Boatman's Opponent 17. Dreams, to insane levels. 18. Prepare for Parabolan Base-Camp 19. Consumed (Eaten even) 20. (yes, I know about the unnamed ambition, I'll get it eventually. Any more clues would be giving it away, so I'm not asking, I'll get it, eventually) 21. "Presence"

What's a good place to start grinding.... is there a thread with the better grinds? Expeditions with natural docks favors are pretty much the most profitable way to spend them, but it's only like that on average over a long period of time- one of the best payouts is one in 160, which can lead to high variance.
Another good one is drawing cards in flit to cash in revolutionaries for 28.8 echoes proscribed materials.
I don't do proper grinds- choosing to seek the bazaar's sorrow instead.

An Ubergoat makes the Overgoat card even more profitable with the additional 10 watchful, and makes SotC 21 much easier. Grind a bunch of Unusual Love Stories for no good reason. You could collect all the tier 8 (1560 E) items - Crimson Book, Reported Location, Impossible Theorem, Veils-Velvet, Fluke-Core, Breath of the Void, and Master's Blood. Get the best gear for all four stats in each slot. If you feel like spending Fate, do a bunch of Gallery of Serpents expeditions since they average somewhere around 5 EPA and can pay out in Tears of the Bazaar. Find a way to get all your quirks to 15.
Also you could go for the old rumor NiteBrite mentioned a while ago of needing 50 Fabulous Diamonds for a special lodgings, which would require a lot of grinding back souls and flipping cards for the Soul Trade selling your soul card.

I think I have all the best possible equipment that isn't dependant on fate, and even some of the ones that are small amounts of fate.
... if I spent 120 fate next rose day, and somebody bounces it back to me, I can get a few more points... but I think that's it.
I've been trying to get my soul back for a month, and my public just isn't doing it for me...
All quirks to 15 was solved reciently, I'm waiting for the guide and then I'll copy along.
So, stats to 200, then grind for uber? Then cider, then hepti?

You can check the best possible equipment for each stat (and BDR) from those links. For some reason your profile doesn't show most items, but I can see that your ship is the Swift Zee-Clipper so getting a Zub or Yacht after finishing anything at zee is one possibility. You can actually get the Feast-gifts yourself without needing anyone else if you send the gifts to an alt and have them decline them. I don't recall all the bundles with relevant values, but you can turn in C: Urchins on Call in Favours in the Flit for both scrap towards Relicker items and bundles, and while at zee you can loot sinking ships at the cost of suspicion and losing Magnanimous.
And yeah, Ubergoat is a first step I'd say, but solely grinding towards cider would take a couple years. I'd say it would be far more interesting to intersperse that grind with grinding for the various other accomplishments already mentioned in this thread.
Oh, one more silly grind! You could go for An Experienced Zailor 25 for a 100% success rate on that one Nadir card option, or An Experienced Zailor 24 if you have M. Demeaux's Advice for Captains from the Sunless Sea launch. edited by Optimatum on 4/18/2016

I tried. It hard-caps at 20 ("this quality cannot increase because ..." as opposed to ".. didn't increase because it was already above ...").

'Genius.' Well, of course. About time.

The Unloved Short Story I think comes from failing the Potential challenge for the lowest level story.
