Hullo, folks! We're beginning a bit of a new venture here, inspired by the fine folks at the Fallen London subreddit. Every week, we'll have a thread where folks with questions can find answers, or advice... or at least earnest encouragement! To keep these threads accessible, up-to-date, and generally peppy, I'll be closing them one week after their creation.
So, if you need to know what a quality is for, or where to earn Memories of Distant Shores, or what the difference is between the Cantigaster and a cantilever, this is the place to ask! And I hope and trust that the forum's thoroughly impressive, and sweetly-scented, collective brains will do their best to answer. I'll be closing this thread at noon GMT, Wednesday the 2nd of March. edited by Sir Frederick Tanah-Chook on 2/24/2016

The Location of a One-Time Prince of Hell does have a purpose in game: you need this if you want to upgrade your lodgings at the brass embassy to the 5-card sanctum the "regular" way. (There's also the cheaper way during Christmas, but that requires selling your soul, which is not an option for everybody)
Also, just before SMEN was suspended, it introduced a mechanic in which the 4 top relicker items (3200-scrap items) could be sacrificed to make progress in Seeking. Us Seekers are still waiting for its return.

Jermion, definitely be aware that abandoning a faction will cost ALL of the connected with the group. So cash in beforehand.

I had a right devil of a time finding our wedding album as well, my darling, so don't feel badly. I think perhaps one of the maids relocated it during the clean-up after that pesky venge-rat assassin squad staged their armed incursion in our parlour. Ha, oh, that was a fun day, wasn't it? Anyway, check over by all the doodads and geegaws by the mantle... Goodness, we do collect many trophies during our tromping about, don't we? "A life of adventure," as promised!
[[I can't find the lithographs in my inventory either. I think they might have disappeared when FB did some rearranging of the inventory categories. The lithographs are still thankfully listed on my Mantle options though, so I suppose that's really of the most use.]]
Edit: Oh glory be. The lithographs are actually on the Scrapbook items, not the Mantle. I knew I shouldn't have opened that last bottle of '68 last night. It's made me useless today. :P edited by Lady Taimi Felix on 2/28/2016

Not profitable, but effective: Gain 4 turncoat via AotB and reset that quality using Revolutionaries. Lowering it very quickly.

I think seeking curios in the Forgotten Quarter can be quite profitable and effective at raising your Nightmares as well. The lower your watchful the quicker your Nightmares will rise, as you will fail the tougher challenges, but even with high watchful you will accumulate nightmares.

I need a way to advance liberation of the night that still provides some profit, I know you can use some items to get it but that doesn't really give me much, am I stuck with this option? Grinding Connected: Revolutionaries in the Forgotten Quarter and cashing it in using Call in Favours in the Flit is reasonably profitable even taking the suspicion into account, but it does require you to draw the right opportunity card in the right place, so it's not grindable.

What is the fastest/easiest way to grind up each of the quirks?
That is a complex enough question that it might take a guide to answer it! It depends on how high you want to raise them [5/10/15] and whether you're just going for one or multiple quirks, since raising one will often lower another. And some can only be raised beteen 10 and 12 via non-repeatable means. Are you thinking of a particular quirk, or wondering how to grind all of them up to 5, or 10? (15 I think can only be done on new characters at this point.)

Short answers...
Austere: loop though the first half of the Iron Republic repeatedly
Hedonist: have debauched affairs in Court, at the University (with the Summerset Provost), or with the Melancholy Curate & sister; if those are all locked, pay Fate to play croquet with a Deviless or wait for the Feast of the Exceptional Rose and enjoy the decadence at Mrs. Plenty's
Heartless: betray the Sardonic Music-Hall Singer by borrowing moon-pearls from her; or, be a Spirifer and sell souls to Hell; or, let a Noman die carelessly
Ruthless: let a Noman die and fight it in its final moments ("wait with a bucket")
Subtle: let a Noman die and go wait on a park bench while it dies
Steadfast: there's a grindable option partway through the Velocipede Squad fate-locked story; or you can raise Criminals Renown very high with an Old Bone Skeleton Key
Magnanimous: be a Shepherd of Souls and turn in souls & infernal contracts together; or let a Noman die and be nice to it
Melancholy: huff Tears of the Bazaar
Everything else is either non-repeatable (like say, many of the Making Your Name gates when those qualities go up, or climactic points in Ambition stories, Tales of the University, etc) or has other problems. edited by metasynthie on 2/25/2016

The fastest way is probably by converting Memories of Light since you can side convert your other resources into Luminosity. After you're through with Memories of Light (or whenever you have enough) you can convert the Mourning Candles for even more points until you hit the LoN cap.
Edit: Actually, I think even the lowest tiers of Luminosity raise LoN now, so using those would probably be your best bet. -- edited by Sara Hysaro on 2/24/2016

Yes, the lowest tier does increase LoN, you can farm it in unfinisehd business in ladybone road and get it to 50 in probably about a week.

I got Master Thief up to five recently, and also performed a grand seance for War of Illusions. Both told me that they would open up new story branches, but I'm not seeing anything popping up. Have I missed something.
Recently, the system was changed somewhat . . .
Essentially, the game now works on a sort of 'tier' system; each stat has a 'making your name' quality, and you unlock a point of this quality by achieving certain 'checks', and eventually you can get as high as 7 in each stat. The 'Master Thief' is one of these checks; once you hit 5, you can move on to the next part of 'making your name'. The thing is that older players were given a page to say where they were in the game, so that they could essentially set their own progress . . . so if you'd moved on much farther than the 'master thief', so you could tell it so, and forgo grinding it up to 5.
This brings me to my guess that your "A Name Whispered in Darkness" (under the 'story' section of 'Myself') is probably quite high, enough so that achieving these two things doesn't actually unlock anything new . . . the 'will unlock new stories' is basically there for newer players that need this quality to unlock stories, as opposed to people way past the check.
(I could be wrong, but it's something to look at)

So what's the deal about scraps, exactly? I know they're extremely valuable, and you can trade them with the Relicker for... Stuff. He offers a lot of options, though. Which offers are the best? And how can I acquire more scraps? The few I have are all from the 'making your name' storylines.
EDIT: Another question! What's a good way to increase my Dangerous 59 stat? I'm trying to follow the Black Ribbon stuff at the docks, but the success rate is still low for me and I'm gaining more wounds than exp. edited by Zeroebbasta on 2/26/2016

You can change closest to - the option to break your ties is on their card. You then need the card for the faction you want to be closest to. It does cost various items but you can see what you need on the relevant cards.
There is another way to get closest to - by selling the Location of the Nadir to someone. But only four factions are willing to buy and that might not include the one one you want. Also you can only do it once.

th8827 is right. The location gained via Ambition is about 80% cheaper than the value of the location itself. Value of the location is 1560 echos (!) and the cost at the ambition is around 250 echos. So many choose to take that discount opportunity and buy the location from the Ambition - a one time offer that won’t return - and keep the location earned via cave of nadir. So anytime you see a very cheep opportunity for this very high value item - take advantage of it. Even if it require you postpone progress for another 3 weeks or so to gain materials. edited by Gonen on 2/27/2016 edited by Gonen on 2/27/2016
