Friends, lovers, spouses: the Feast of the Exceptional Rose is here!

Love is kind, except when it's cruel. During the Feast, Fallen Londoners exchange surprising gifts. Kind gifts, cruel gifts, and those that are both.

LOVE GIFTS

Send and receive gifts from other players!

Rewards from the Feast can be won by increasing your Masquing, through participating in the revels and the exchange of gifts. Use your Masquing quality to unlock special companions, only available during this festival!

Make friends for the exchange of gifts on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit or right here in this thread.

END YOUR INCONVENIENT ENTANGLEMENTS!

The Glowering Judge looms in his bench. The Auditors from the Ministry sit stiffly in the gallery.

This Feast of the Exceptional Rose, we're introducing player divorce. Has your spouse been too long gone? Are you too distressed by their unaccountable peckishness? Has love simply faded? The divorce courts will hear your plight; and, if they are satisfied, will end your marriage, so that you may seek out new love stories.

The Glowering Judge is a Prelapsarian fixture of Her Majesty's divorce courts. The Ministry of Public Decency have ordered that they witness these cases - although, of course, the Auditors have absolutely no bearing on his final judgements.

If you wish to divorce your partner, look for the option to seek a divorce on the Attend to Matters of the Heart card in your Lodgings.

SKIN-BOUND MEMORIES!

Clathermont's Tattoo Parlour! The place to come for a singing mermaid or a message encoded onto your scalp.

A unique story involving the Neath’s famed tattooists, the Clathermont Family is available for the duration of the Feast.

Find the Clathermonts in Ladybones Road when you have A Name in Seven Secret Alphabets at 4 or higher. As part of the Feast, continue this story from the same area by playing News at Clathermont’s from 15th February.

There is a little something new available for those who’ve already experienced the Clathermont story, and those whose Nomen are yet living.

THE LADY IN LILAC

She examines you carefully. Her eyes swim with glints like violet wine...

The engimatic Lady in Lilac returns to London at festival-time.

On the 15th February we will be releasing the Lady in Lilac card into your opportunity deck, allowing you to trade in your gifts for Masquing. From the 15th, you’ll also be able to turn in your Masquing for special companions on the Encounters at the Feast card.

The Feast will end on the 22nd February. The Lady in Lilac and Encounters at the Feast will remain available until the 26th, after which your remaining Masquing will be converted to Making Waves when Time, the Healer visits.

Yes exactly. Even though the three cards are ubiquitous frequency, they don't show up at the right times to make it work out within the magic week. I won't be as fussed if it's all free to play stuff, but when fate and real money are involved, things change. This after all only happens once a year. (And of course I will cease the complaining once the RNG smiles on me again.)

My my MY, after RELUCTANTLY parting with Mizz de Witte's lovely Well-Song I had 80 masquing to spend and doing so revealed the identity of the Irresistable Lady! What a SOUND WOMAN, I think this may be love!

We've so much in common! Cigars! Money! Cuisine! We've certainly been running into eachother quite a bit as of late...

Indeed there are cards, but I wouldn't say there are "mandatory" social actions. You can participate in Feast activities playing solo. At a minimum, you can see this as two weeks in which you get a new Ubiquitous Frequency card which usually pays out 2.5 - 5 echoes (and some masquing, which you can trade for unique companions or for Stolen Kisses).

Even without social actions, the Feast is a very profitable holiday.

Some important information about Fate Gifts
If Non-Fate Gifts are declined then nothing is returned.

If a Fate Gift is declined, then the sender of the gift gets the gift back.

There is currently a bug where if you press the enter key when inputting a contact, the gift goes to your highlighted contact, which is often the account at the top of your contacts list.

I've seen this happen before, and it results in accidental gifts of fate. If you want to safe guard against this, my account name is just the number 8, which is listed before most other contacts. I can decline your gifts to get your fate back if you send me a message in game or via the forums (or we can trade, if you want), I won't accept any unsolicited fate gifts until I can confirm they're for me.

Trading Feast Gifts with me?
If anyone is in DIRE need of Feast Gifts, send a Pink Cat (preferably) my way and I shall gift you back. Otherwise I'm not interested in casual exchanges if you've got a lot of them going on.

I will return as many gifts as I have supplies.

Within the first night I have recieved 50 Gifts. I will try to return everything, but look at me as a last resort maybe.

The Starveling Café?

This Feast of the Rose the Starveling Café is sending out Starveling Cats, which are pet-able items (but not equipable).

The way it works is you pick a recipient, pick a cat, tell the Café why in the name of Salt would you want to send someone else a Starveling Cat, and that's it!

I have the same problem . . .

I think it'll be automatically done at some point? They said somewhere else that players with deactivated spouses will be free of them early this week; it's possible the divorce option is for active players, while deactivated players will have theirs removed for them at some point?

* * *

On a different note, is it possible to change one's destiny during this festival?

This was my first Feast and I'd just like to say that I absolutely loved it. I had a simply wonderful time.

Companion wise I did alright, but not as well as I could have. I just found my Explosion of Neath-Colours on the Stroke of Midnight way too cool to trade in, even if it doesn't actually do anything useful.

I think the writers are selling themselves short with the Lady in Lilac conversation, I think it worked very well.

Let me tell you, that card might say it's Ubiquitous but I saw it once this year and got nothing from it. I drew about 50 cards before I once again got the sense that Fallen London was having a party and no-one invited my character, and wandered off.

Changing to a remote lodging, then going to a location like the Labyrinth, should have narrowed down your deck enough that you get the 'Feast' card a lot more often . . . I'm not sure why it didn't come up for you, but it came up plenty for myself, enough I was able to get quite a good amount of masquing from that alone. It may just have been bad luck for you.Edit: very anti-social players could probably even use an alt to send gifts back and forth, making the 'mandatory' socialisation a moot point, too wink

This was my first Feast of the Exceptional Rose, and it was certainly an interesting experience, but I really wanted to enjoy it more. Unfortunately, the timing was very inconvenient for me: I've been busy lately, and I've also finally shown signs of fatigue after seven months of close involvement with the game (and a couple of negative experiences with certain stories), so I wasn't in much of a mood to play.

And it all seems to have ended so fast, which is a pity. When one logs in often and has the game in one's mind a lot, time seems to dilate and everything appears to last longer. (Upon looking at the earliest entries of my journal for the first time, I marvelled at how closely together all those milestones and new stories were packed, which until then I had thought occupied ten or fifteen days rather than three.) When one has other things to worry about, however, one barely logs in often enough not to lose the weekly payment, and just a couple of times of thinking "not now, I'll find a better time to properly read up about the Feast (and its deadlines)" are enough to push one beyond those unknown deadlines.

In the end I saw about half of the feast, though I only got to play through a small portion of the available branches. I did exchange some gifts at one point, and I converted them to masquing (all of 21 points), but I never got to trade them for a companion so I have no idea what that's like. This doesn't bother me much (perhaps because I don't know what I'm missing), and I enjoyed certain other seasonal experiences, but there is something that really stings: I've missed the opportunity to visit Clathermont's. I meant to advance Millicent's story there and, although I think I can still do so anyway, that way I'll miss the intermediate step that I could find during the festival. Actually, I can't remember: how big is the damage? Can someone inform me about my options? Do I have to wait another year to see what happens with that story?

I can't answer the question about Millicent as I'm shakier on her mechanics, but in short, that opportunity only comes once a year. That said, here's a bit on the companions:
All companions were obtainable on the An Encounter at the Feast card. This, along with the Lady in Lilac was pinned in all London locations from last Monday until Friday. Your masquing could have been spent to get almost all the free companions as they cost between 3-7 (or 10, I don't remember) a piece. Your earned masquing should have been converted to Making Waves now but if you had any gifts you did not use this year they will remain in your inventory.

I think this is my fourth year in a row of ducking out of Fallen London during the Feast of the Rose; I'll basically never meet the Captivating Princess but at this point it's almost a role-playing choice. I find the mechanics of the Feast (mandatory social actions and card drawing) so repellent that it sucks the fun out of the rest of the game, which I fully recognise is irrational. And I have no excuse for why I keep ducking Fruits of the Zee, which has much more of the kind of content I'm interested in.

I've been looking forward to this almost since I started playing! This will be my first Feast. Lately I've been having a hard time in meatspace and not using my turns every day, but I check my e-mails fastidiously and will log on to attend to social obligations. I like to post on the forum in my own voice, but to conduct in-game business in character. I'm a friend of the bazaar and always have Nights on the Town available, and I'm interested in making friends. No worries if you don't feel like writing me a unique message (although I love them), but I would like to know if a social action is time-sensitive or will harm me, etc. I don't mind menace exposure as long as you warn me in advance; I'm very good at menace reduction so I would simply come prepared. Not interested in K&C yet for RP reasons.

My (so far, only) character (named the same as my alias on these forums) is desperate to meet the Stiff-Backed Young Lady. I believe the soft cap on Masquing will require a fate-locked gift to meet her. I am open to going into my pocket for this, although I believe the Fate would need to be spent by somebody else. I have only just begun building my Masquing, and would be grateful for any gifts to get me to 30. I will be more than happy to reciprocate; if you have preferences, let me know, or I'll happily improvise a gift in kind.

Edit: If there is no less clunky option than gifting 100 Fate to somebody so they can raise my Masquing other than at their own expense, I'm happy to take that approach. I'm open to recommendations or ideas from and in all directions.

Lilac is pretty fickle. Historically FBG has provided an access code to give people a storylet chance to obtain her card toward the end of the feast for those who've been especially unlucky to use, so hopefully that will return this year. I recall both Lilac and the Encounter at the Feast cards lasting for some time after the Feast as well, so don't fret too much if you don't manage to get all your stuff in before the Feast formally ends - there's probably still a chance to at least Encounter your intended companion, and possibly more chances to trade stuff in. I forget when Masquing converted to Making Waves last year, unfortunately.

But, like TeslaWalket and at least another person on the forum, I can't get my second Tattoo. (my Recent Visit to Millicent has not reset)

I've also been pretty unlucky lately. I failed a 50% challenge 10 times in a row earlier today. And I haven't seen Lilac once. shake head

having the "Encounters" card so insanely rare

The "An Encounter at the Feast" card has Frequent frequency at the moment, as does "The Lady in Lilac", so you should see them more often than any specific regular card (on average, that is).

(And "The Feast of the Rose" card is with Ubiquitous Frequency, so you should see it a lot.)

If I remember correctly from past years, the cards' frequency will increase as the Feast gets nearer to its end.

Any suggestion on must-have companions, storywise? I don't really care about stats, for now.

Letty, the mercy, for fate, will add a new option on a salon, as will the diplomat, i believe. (The diplomate's hallowmas option is availible regardless of whether you have him or not, iirc.) Otherwise, the only reasons are RP or stats.

(Statwise, You should get the high-masqueing non-fate companions, because they compete with many second-best in stat options that cost far more to aquire. +7 to a stat is nothing to expell germs in the general direction of, after all.)

Just to be clear, does the The Lady in Lilac card appear everywhere?

I seem to recall reading some text that says she avoids some places like Ladybones Road, but I can't be sure.

Some areas have cards associated with them that you only draw at that location. If you want fewer cards competing with Lilac and the Encounter at the Feast, Labyrinth of Tigers is the best place to flip cards, to reduce deck clutter, since it does not have unique cards... unless you are also after a region's unique cards.

Logically, she would avoid Ladybone Road, because of Clathermont, but I don't know for sure.

I also suggest keeping the Feast of the Rose card in your hand if you do not need it for Masquing, to keep it out of the draw pool. If you are sub-20 Masquing, use it all you need.

So if we have two tattoos and reset our tattoos, would we have to wait til next year to get the second one again?

(Speaking of which, I'd kill for a Flint-related one. Losing the stains on my soul was worth commemorating!)

Lilac does appear in Ladybones Road with the same frequency as in other locations.

Am I correct in thinking that I won't be able to get the Academic if I don't have any Fate gifts? I don't think I'll be able to acquire any, since I have no Fate to exchange with someone... Should I just go ahead and start getting the other companions?

If you get any Fate it is actually possible to give yourself a Fate-locked gift. Sending any Fate gift to another player and having them decline will place it directly into your inventory! (Though this doesn't work for non-Fate gifts or canceling the offer yourself.)

    Apparently not:

Yes exactly. Even though the three cards are ubiquitous frequency, they don't show up at the right times to make it work out within the magic week. I won't be as fussed if it's all free to play stuff, but when fate and real money are involved, things change. This after all only happens once a year. (And of course I will cease the complaining once the RNG smiles on me again.)

    Yeah, I fully agree . . .

I think - next year - it might be worth to make either the Encounters a fixed storylet/location (like the tattoo parlour), or to have the option to have repeatable play from it (when it does appear) much like how Lilac can be played over and over to get your masquing up . . . having the "Encounters" card so insanely rare, but then have it vanish each time you purchase a companion, kind of gives an element of panic and not in the good way, because actual money has been spent and is at risk. That being said, I think they both gain in frequency as the feast goes on? If so, it's possible we'll all get a chance to use all the masquing accumulated smile

    Here's hoping I don't have a pile of teeth in my character's closet until next year . . .

In Ladybones Road you will need to have completed the case to find the Missing Comtessa. Once that's done the Clathermont's story will appear smile

If you've not reached the Comtessa case yet just keep doing the other Making Your Name cases with the Honey Addled Detective. - Think it goes Finding the Detective, then tracking down the Absconding Devil, then Comtessa- (I can't remember, but I think you can leave the Poet case for later)

I already have Acquaintance: the Honey-Addled Detective 1; A Finder of Heiresses 2; Evidence in the Case of the Absconding Devil 7; Entwined in the Intrigues of the Clathermont Family 9 and I still don't see anything in Ladybones Lane. What else do I need? I'm very confused right now.

And I just checked, I have A Name in Seven Secret Alphabets 7 - Immortal in Horizon Glyphs. So the mystery continues...

I believe the mechanics have not been changed, but.. you know... money.

Be advised - as said before, *canceling* the Fate gift by the *sender* does not recover it.

    Verified as still working.
