Well, I feel very silly. I finally realized what the image on Touching Love Stories is supposed to be--a mushroom with a bow tied on it. Even though I knew it couldn't be right, I have been parsing this strange image for an embarrassingly long time as one of those Christmas-tree-shaped car air fresheners.

Wait...the Midnight Matriarch ISN'T an owl?
*Checks icon in Bazaar* Oh...NOW it makes sense why it's possible to get her from one of those Pass-the-cat packages!

Mischievious Urchin: Owright, 'ere's the last one!

Put-Upon Urchin: 'Ey, that ain't a cat! Sumpin' wrong with yer eyes, mate?

Mischievious Urchin: Well, I found it hangin' around the Duchess's wing lookin' all high an' mighty like cats do, and eatin' a rat like cats do, so I just swept it inter the sack wiv the rest. Just wrap it up and put it in the post!

Put-Upon Urchin: But...But owls're a completely different shape from cats! Me advanced wrapping technique...it won't do at all! I'll have to start over from the beginnin'! All the efficiency, gone!

Mischievious Urchin: You owright there mate? Yer sounding like Mister Pages when 'e gets stolen from.

I used to think that the image for the ES "Where You and I must Go" was a white shark lounge singer. I can still see the microphone at his mouth, and the mike stand, and the sunglasses perched over his dorsal fin. I can almost see his fingers reaching for the keyboard...

Lol, this is the funniest thread XD

Another pic that always confused me was the Prim Baronet's. I always thought it looked like he didn't have any pupils. Seriously, is he supposed to be looking down? Back over his shoulder? Every time I see his artwork pop up I always spend a moment or two trying to figure it out and come up with a different answer each time.

It's kind of a shame since I think he's actually one of the cutest looking Fallen London characters (I always kinda want to leap into the screen and protect him :P ) but that dead fish stare disturbs me...

Uh oh… it it NOT supposed to be a person with a bottle-opener for a head, the universally recognized symbol for madness??

For about half a year I was sure it's some kind of jumping leopard thingy on a plinth. And wondered what's it got to do with horses and Forgotten Quarter.

Until just now I thought it was a grave robber's weird hand.

Oh, now I see the horse statue! I always thought that it was the edge of a roof, with an oddly-shaped drainpipe-thing hanging from the bottom.

Also, when I first saw the Enquirer picture, I thought that it was some strange creature with a pale, angular head and wearing a top hat. Only recently did I realize that the creature's head was actually a newspaper with eyeholes cut out.

Sorry for a bit of necro, but you guys have to help me. The Merry Gentleman. What am I supposed to be seeing? The thread hasn't settled it for me at all. All I can see is a person either with a long beak or a wide-brimmed hat, staring at a doctor's bag (and whoever took the picture cut off the top of his head - not a very good photographer). I have no idea how to make my mind see this billowing cape that has been mentioned.

This is driving me crazy! I'll be seeing him in real life if I don't sort this soon.

I'm firmly in the Midnight Owltriarch camp. Intellectually, I know she's a cat, but that little icon always makes my brain go "owl! that an owl. definite owl."

Otherwise... I can't think of any particularly perplexing pictures... certainly, some of the older silhouettes can be a bit baffling - especially when they appear to have been stretched out of proportion when implemented - but they've largely been discontinued. Now that I think about it, my mental image of the Merry Gentleman looks nothing like his icon... and what's with his acquaintance with the giant beak?

...Goodness. I'd been seeing it as a rock as well and somehow never questioned, it either. In our defense, there's stranger things in the Neath than love stories in the form of beribboned chunks of masonry.

I only recently realized the new-ish image for the Scandal menace is not a lady with curly dark hair against a light background, but a woman AND a man's face to the right. It's obvious on the enlarged image, but in the sidebar...

My thoughts exactly, but now that I see the mushroom shape, it just won't go away! smile I think the coloration could be because it's a lacre solidified mushroom...

I had no idea the image for the A merry gentleman/Shroud of Little Midnights was until I took a closer look recently. I was just mystified by how shadowy it was. I noticed the briefcase object, but the humanoid look with a pointy hat didn't click for the longest time.

I am always a bit disturbed by the honey-mazed guy. At first, he looked like he was going to pull off a mighty roundhouse kick to me! Thinking on it a bit, it might be because he's pretty much taken over. The red eye is reminiscent of the Direful Reflection. Seems like he's hiding the other red eye with a monocle. Looks like his legs are in a runner's position with one leg extended, twisting his torso to face you. Still, having torn pants on one leg is really crazy, he might as well prepare for a mighty kick too!

Wow, this whole time, I saw a guy in some party hat treading dangerous waves, like it was a literal representation of death by water for Nightmares. I never saw the guy waking up from bed until now. What a complete 180!

I see the same thing as you--a man with a large hat and a large briefcase.

On another note, for the longest time I thought the icon for nightmares was a person being tossed on a stormy sea, which I thought was a super interesting way to represent dreams. Once I realized it was someone sitting up in bed, I was a little disappointed.

Dont think I have seen this image before but yeah it looks like s white shark lounge singer to me too, probably crooning some Lionel Richie number. What confuses me is, if it isnt a white shark lounge singer, what is it supposed to be?

Okay, I'll try. On the right side, there's a sort of crescent-shaped projection. If you read the iceberg as a shark, that's its dorsal fin. Then the slight bump on the left is its snout, with two dark spots for nostrils. Okay, sharks don't have nostrils, but this is an anthropomorphic shark. The dark cylinder that sticks out from where the shark's mouth would be (actually the hull of a ship, I now think) is the microphone into which he's singing, and the space between the two icicles I read as the microphone stand. The black bump above the fin (the prow of the ship?) rests atop the dorsal fin. Lounge Singer Shark has slid his sunglasses back from his eyes and they rest on the dorsal fin as he croons into the mike. At the base, it widens, but that's where anthro-shark's fin-hands are coming up to play the keyboard (the dark water.)

I dunno, probably wasted words; usually with this kind of thing, either you see it or you don't. But that's how I first read this picture - it's a tiny thumbnail, so I had to blow it up a lot to see it as a ship in an iceberg.

Right, Nightmares! I knew there was something I couldn't understand at the beginning—and then I realised what it was, and felt like a complete idiot.

EDIT: I didn't have any problem identifying Honey Mazed as a crazy person, but I didn't pay much attention to it, either. The man is actually dressed in (honey-stained) white tie and a top hat. His clothes are rather light in colour, probably to make his features stand out, but that way it's harder to see that he's ruining expensive evening wear (in addition to wielding what looks like a meat cleaver).

He is totally a person with a bottle-opener for a head. I can just see him taking on such a title for lobotomies he performs for those with nightmares. Look out for the bottle-opener, that's one person you don't want messing with your head...but the suites at the hotel do look nice!

I agree the plague mask is most likely the case. Still, bottle-opener head leaves such an amusing thought for the character!

I get a similar vibe with Mrs Plenty's picture too. The wiki has a more detailed picture that helps, but the thumbnail in-game is a little disconcerting. There's only so much room, but still, the whites of her eyes (sclera) are all I see from time to time.

My interpretation is that it's what someone possessed by a Fingerking looks like in the mirror, or at least the memory of that.

The last few lines of the rare success on A Masque in the Marsh seem to suggest this. And a lot of the other sources and the eventual use of 101 of them imply a strong connection to the snakes.
