Does retiring and losing work the same as death?

If you retire without your ambition complete, does it work the same as dying? You just go on to pick your next captain?
If so, is there any particular reason to retire instead of doing some suicidal move like battling the biggest sea monster you can find?

It's not 100% the same. The main difference is if you always retire your captains and never die then you won't unlock the labyrinth of tigers. That's the only major difference I can think of off the top of my head though.

But if you've already died in the past, there's no difference?

But if you've already died in the past, there's no difference? Technically retiring early is counted as a Draw while dying is a Loss. Dying means you lose your ship and all items on it you cannot sell or convert if you were back in port before retiring early. Only completing a listed or hidden Ambition is counted as a win which may or may not give stat boosts before continuing. Finding a legacy book in a game-ending event is considered a draw. Finding a Legacy book in a Hidden Ambition is considered a win (think Kingdom.)

But in terms of what your next captain starts with, it makes no difference? You get to pick your legacy or legacies, you keep your inherited lodging and heirlooms, etc.? Same thing happens whether you die or resign in failure?

Same thing happens whether you die or resign in failure? Yes. That is correct, except wimnning could technicallly give a few more stats on the Half stat Warrant of redemption options. Stat Legacy Books are not "picked." They are discovered by your current captain, and unlocked on all future captains. If you don't make an ironclad will every game, you lose your Lodgings and Heirlooms in it. Besides that, I do not think there is any difference for your future death or retirement.
