What is mountain sherd used for?

The wiki claims turning it into a captivating treasure isn't worthwhile http://sunlesssea.gamepedia.com/Mountain-sherd
The Interactions table it provides as evidence, is largely full of ways to GAIN a mountain sherd. as far as i can see, very few ways to actually use it, mostly the father's bones ambition (which im not doing) and the carnelian exile's questline. it's not clear on how many that requires, can anyone specify?

Besides a reward option you may or may not use it for (the ineffective warning is for people who buy it; those who earn it get this for free after all,) it's regularly used for the quests as progress points. Should you earn one, sell it for a Treasure if not on this quest and congratulations!

i don't understand what you mean by this.
can you confirm that it's only used on two occasions in total, and hence that only 2 are ever needed for quests?

Sherd and yes. However, as rare monsters go, it's pretty regular showing up about every 4-6 passes by its Chapel of Lights zone.
