So london is fallen.
But what exactly is the fall. How does a city end up transported deep underground (and by the cumaean canal's exit, a few hundred miles east too) while remaining largely intact and its residents largely alive. What exactly happened?

What became of the other cities of britain when this happened, and the remnant colonies of the british empire above ground?

Sunless Skies needs engine and speed control mechanics. Have a look at my design proposal for implementing it

Most of the answer to that is deliberately a mystery - we get occasional glimpses of Surface-Britain, so we know it's still -there-, at least, but we have no idea what's happening there now that London is gone, or what the political situation is in the remainder of the British Empire.

As for the Fall itself, well, short answer is that it was picked up and carried there by bats. Actually, physically carried there, and put down, squashing what was there already. Obviously, that's next to impossible, so... Bazaar magic.

While the "Emperor" is an alternate reality, wasn't there news about France taking over influence as England did and Vienna being somewhat in Anarchy?

Both reasonable assumptions, yeah. The ascent of the French Empire is treated as at least plausible, and Sunless Sea shows us a Vienna that's even more of a boiling pot of radical political and intellectual ideas than it was in real life. Various Great Game stories show us that the Russian Empire is making itself known up there somewhere, and we get a few other glimpses of what the other great powers are up to. But, generally, the weight of the narrative is in the Neath, and Surface matters are touched upon only when they affect Neathy matters.

We do know that one of the Traitor Empress' daughters stayed behind and took over what was left of the Empire. It's probably crumbling though after losing the capital.

Maintaining a controlling interest in my soul requires a pretty constant negotiation between the various shareholder interests. Thankfully the Fingerkings 23% control makes a pretty good foil to unite the other factions enough to get to 51%.

I believe the Empress' Shadow was speculated to most likely be Victoria, the Princess Royal, who married King Frederick III before The Fall. I don't remember anything about her taking control of the Empire, however.

Wasn't there forum spec that concluded the empire was inherited by Prussia, due to said marriage? Granted that's speculation and not canon but it's roughly related

We only know the first part, the second being an assumption from phrasing. The source is of course from The Gift.
