At the University, I've reached a critical final decision point of my investigation into the Murder of the Senior Reader in _______.
I'm here.
http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/Reveal_the_murderer_of_the_Senior_Reader_in
If I reveal what I think happened, as far as I know, I'm out of the University. I don't want to condemn an innocent, or at least someone who didn't commit the crime. And the actions of the Provost did serve some utility, as the Senior Reader was reckless and dangerous.
I am uncertain how to proceed here, as I don't know how difficult being out of the University will make things. But I hate being forced to falsely accuse. I'd appreciate your thoughts.
edited by Jacke on 12/31/2015

You can get back into the University later on via the Dilmun Club! So don't worry.

That said, this is the end. No matter your choice the existing storylets will be lost. So don't fret too much - though if you wish to convert some high tier mysteries soon you may wish to do that before making this final choice.

As in all things, be guided by what feels narratively right for your character. As Sestina said, there is indeed a route back in later down the track, but as Sara added, there is little to come back to, regardless of what choice you make. Personally, I betrayed the colleague for the self-advancement of running my own department, even though I'm an otherwise highly moral character. People are complex. They can be entirely selfless in many ways, and entirely ruthless in many others. Sometimes it is very interesting to examine the later consequences of following your intuition, in these stories.

I definitely had that with my decision with the Soul Trade story, then later on using that decision to take an action in regards to the Regretful Soldier and his blank-eyed wife, and then when I took him on a sea voyage for a recent Exceptional story (and did my very best to protect him from all harm along the way.) When a text-based browser game gives you feels, you know it's something special. :3

Ahh this. I admit there was a part of me for my Main IC that was blurting internally, "FIne fine, I have Flute Street to discover! Can we just get this sorted business over with once the announcement is made?" It, like the whole FL city seems a simple path forking, but is laden with consequences on which path (or no path chosen at all when applicable, but not here,) you selected.
The option is two choices. And I can say before spoiler tags hide stuff you can choose what appears to be the actual murderer or appears to be a patsy. Why is where the simple becomes not. Activating tags.
- Fingering the Murderer means exposing the whole interconnection other parties have with the University. It may be the "moral or honest" thing, but one needs to understand why this victim The Senior Reader in _______. was murdered. They were a horrible person, and dangerous even before horrible. They were careless and reckless with their actions literally risking the entire University burning down, and risked putting long-standing plans and people in harm, blackmailing what the Provost was confessing to with a certain Devil. The "murder" which was not the permanent kind was as much to strip what was being done from another loose cannon as much as a "you've gone too far with Blackmail, and also and the Radical Postgraduate subject of your experiments is quite insane" action of the murdered. Quite a message. The problem is the "work" the Provost is doing is "manufactured" and only "non interfered" work succeeds in regards to the Bazaar's needs. (This also holds true to things in the Jack of Smiles debacle, but that monster is/was already out and is too late to have simply recalled that for now.) Of course, people who mention "necessary evils" and "...for the greater good" framing innocent people risk a slippery slope of their own. This choice kicks you out of the University until your Scientific Discovery allows you to bring enough research proving your commitment to the University's Faction or they are priority, not other things like "honesty."
- Fingering the patsy or The Consumptive Cryptozoologist means supporting the return to Status Quo, protecting an entire university from Blackmailing, the Scorching truth (literally) and the Master's schemes behind the University's actions, including the Bazaar, the Sun, Devils and Correspondence. If the player understands how Notability works, this is a part of that. It allows the continuation of your Department, and the removal of a very troublesome person from influence (The Senior Reader in _______. ) who is as much an instability as the connections to The Consumptive Cryptozoologist's relation are (her sister or The Radical Postgraduate) as revolutionaries who are trying to Destroy all Illumination for "pure freedom and independence." It's a "kill two birds with one stone, even if one of the birds recovers later and the other shouldn't be killed." But at a cost. A serious cost. The Consumptive Cryptozoologist (unlike her sister's potentially dubious motives,) is completely innocent of the murder done by the Provost's Sorrow Spider (and the venom was a Red Herring, Duchess revelations aside.) She will be killed, returned, and exiled to the Tomb Colonies for this, to keep the Masters'/Bazaar's plans going, and not inconvenience finding a new figurehead at the University. Oh, and you keep your fledging Department, still tenuous even after all that.
(For those pragmatic to a ruthless (not to be confused with Ruthless) degree, the price of honesty pays as the price of betrayal, just two different types of payment 1 at 3000 for a .01 per and one at 1500 for a .02 per. The latter is up-convertible while the former is not if you are that cold-blooded in your calculations however. Also, supporting the Masters always gains you Connected: Masters of course.)
So do you do the right thing at the cost of everything built but done wrongly by the one responsible of the murder; or do you keep everything that was built and threatened by those unstable, insane, and reckless continued intact at the cost of one innocent person keeping the Murderer in their important position to save scores continuing their work also helping the Masters (and your own Department of course?)

Thanks for all of your comments.
I'm not finding the storylet's at the University after starting on opening a department that entertaining or helpful, unlike the earlier ones. Unfortunately, my connections to the Colleges wasn't that high and I didn't get the full benefit of the early storylets. And I didn't realise they all would disappear when I started on opening my department. I still find "Shadowy Dealings at the University" useful (just got my SotC to 8 with them), so would most miss it. Otherwise, I am inclined to tell the truth. I do wish there was another option out of the corner I've painted myself into here. The third one that drops me down a step in the Investigation is just putting things off.

I decided to reveal the truth. I considered that I could not accuse someone falsely when they were not guilty of any crime. And I see I can still pursue Shadowy Dealings at the University. And other matters. I am glad I took this course.
