(the truthseeker) I did as much as one could do in the Nadir, and am here to tell you what I discovered...but I forgot! [The joke-already stale when it was first told-is riot-inducing the seventh time it's spoken. The Velocipede squad has to knock a few "''eads" aside just to escort the truthseeker out in one piece let alone not killed!]
(And this is why you don't let characters give advice with no senses of Humor or who failed a Persuasive tact check without using a Confident Smile....)
Writing seriously now as a forum poster, I also will highly strongly, even if you don't like guides because they are "cheating," recommend using this guide. As noted there, your immediate (if not on one visit, but eventually after two or more visits,) goal is to gain all the basic equipment/Henchman, and draw the associated cards to upgrade the item. (Note: if some story requires the original item such as A Reputation of Some Importance: Legendary Charisma and Parabola Linens, you'll need a new item, as the Changed item no longer counts as the said base item. This is very esoteric, only regularly being used for Warm Amber Sources most of the time; but just be warned, Irrigo infused items no longer count as the original item should stories ever draw upon a specific item from this list.) Any upgraded "clothing" or Henchman items now sell for the cost of the original item, should you have some mad reason to sell them. That written, I will later list the Weapon Nodule of Violet Amber Nodule location and cost to sell, since this technically is the most likely item to be duplicated and possibly sold. Due to this length, I am spoilering the below info. You can make mad bank, but it's anything but "simple" Here we go:
As noted nefore, the two big cards to get are "The End of Battles" and "An Unlikely Garden"
The first card is best as it only costs the 3 Second Chances of its stat for a very nice reward item for 2 Irrigo (most people take the Airag or Searing Enigma, the former is usually hardest to get as it doesn't even have a once-a-month option and needs grinding and a rare card draw, expeditions, a specific spouse at the festival of the rose, occasionally an Advent gift, or a rare success.) However, all options are nice as the guide shows. There is no "bad choice", just more or less rare for the SC cost.
The second card's Where did the Rosers go? was hard enough on it's second option (1000 Persuasive Check) as it was before you could go in with a bunch of Confident Smiles and "perhaps not" until out of them or succeed. But now with the Second Chance Exponential cost of backing out and retrying (1,2,4, etc.) it's best not to try at all or a couple of times at most. Success grants you a Searing Enigma (a 62.50 Echo item) at 2 irrigo, while failure gives you 50 Cryptic Clues (a .02 Echo item or 1 echo total) and +1 CP Nightmares for 2 irrigo. I do not know how much the other option But you were their enemies, were you not? grants Walking the Falling Cities for 1 irrigo. If you are planning on using a mood card and know you are not going to spend an hour in there (and be advised, you may wait redrawing cards at 1 per 10 minutes, so plan of also using a little fate for a refresh just in case,) it might work to spend more SC at the above, but pretty much don't waste more than a few turns on this or just the one second chance now; as the "The End of Battles" offers it for 3 SC in the first place or the other rewards. (But if you think spending a Mood card for this prize alone is worth it after the above info, fine.)
The "Woods in Winter" option The dance goes on (with Entwined in the Intrigues of the Clathermont Family 30) actually ONLY automatically rewards Dramatic Tension if you have met Lilac, talked to her, and made a tattoo choice (not to tattoo yourself and have a Respectable bare skin is also a choice for this here) at the once-yearly in February Feast of the Exceptional Rose. You also must finish much of the Entwined in the Intrigues of the Clathermont Family as possible in Ladybones Road (Rank 8 is the last story you play before then it should become 9 I believe) before the Feast ends and still draw her card whenever in the Feast the card is unlocked advancing that value, and not betray her. And meeting all this then allows the huge +1 CP on the Nadir card automatically once that Entwined value is now 30. Else, you only get the other connections, and can sometimes get the DT +1CP on a Rare Success. if you have no other good Nadir cards before the feast, it's OK, but it's best to choose others better pre-feast if so. Both options always grant +10 CP each to Revolutionaries, The Great Game, and Society. Both options cost 2 Irrigo. Fortune's page costs 1 irrigo and grants +1 Counting the Days instead.
I'll detail the rest of the cards below:
People who get The Catafalquerie card the first time, should get Rebels who will not rise and the Complaisant Frost-Moth for 1 Irrigo. it's a 5 Echo item when sold (but should you be a collector, it only allows one in inventory However, if you sell it when exited, you can get another one, still being a 5 Echoes-per-turn profit.) This does require you to have finished the Cheesemonger's story and have The Great Game - A Fine Piece in the Game The other potentially decent option on that card is A casket marked with a black ribbon. It allows you to spend 7 Taste Levels for a Vial of Tears of the Bazaar for 2 Irrigo. While that's a 312.50 Echo item, you may need your taste/tears for other things right now for the Wicket/Noman or for upgrading to M*****'s B***d for DeGustibus, and may or may not want to do this. (I'll leave the experts here and elsewhere to debate the best way to grind Tears, especially on this thread.) An empty casket rewards 0-9 Extraordinary Implications (a 2.50 Echo each item) for 2 Irrigo. I'll explain A casket marked with a familiar name later below regarding its possible use with the Nadir Dream cards. Just note that this card is locked if you have Nightmares 21 or Higher.
A pause for refreshment offers A Recipe for Zzoup for one Blackmail Material. Only one recipe can be had at one time, but DeGustibus "buys" it for 17.50 Echoes. (And DeGustibus is unlocked often just before the Wicket closes or just before The feast of the Exceptional Rose.) This is worth doing once per DeGustibus selling, as there is no other use for this and the other option Bread only gives 50 Cryptic Clues (worth .02 Echoes per or 1 Echo total,) and 1 Irrigo
A card game card offers Speak to the man on the left giving 1 Romantic Notion and 1 Tale of Terror!! (both .10 and .50 Echoes' worth or .60 Echoes' worth total.) Speak to the woman on the right giving 1 Memory of Distant Shores and 1 Maniac's Prayer (both .10 and .50 Echoes' worth or .60 Echoes' worth total.) Deal yourself in is for Ambition: Heart's Desire! players at or ahead of 12 (and are at minimum started on Ambition: Heart's Desire - the Topsy King, but may be in any of its stages or completed it to qualify,) if gives 1 Extraordinary Implication (a 2.50 echo item.) If your Irrigo is exactly 3 (and you don't have the Heart's Desire Ambition which almost always takes precedence,) you can use Dice! for one pair of Devilbone Dice for a .90 Echo item. I'm listing this for completionist reasons not as a recommendation, since others asked for said dice outside of the Advent or long expedition/bundle attempts. A Romantic Notion and Tale of Terror!! or Memory of Distant Shores and Maniac's Prayer while less total have much better use when up-converted in lots of 50 of their own kind. All above card options are 1 Irrigo.
A Familiar Face? is the Parabola-Linen Suit or Parabola-Linen Frock upgrade with Sleep's fortress. it gives a Strange-Shore Parabola Suit or Strange-Shore Parabola Frock for 2 irrigo. technically, if you have both, you can choose either for 2 Irrigo, but must draw the card again to change the other at 2 irrigo. Should you not have that clothing, the other option Get out. Get out! gives 4 CP Watchful at 1 irrigo
A Weakness in the Air is the Pair of Luminous Neathglass Goggles upgrade with Dreams can wait, requiring a 100 Watchful check. It gives the Pair of Irrigo Goggles for 2 irrigo and -4 CP Watchful. Failure gives 1 irrigo and +1 cp wounds and removes the card. Should you not have that clothing, the other option Dream gives +1 CP to all Dreams and +1 Nightmares at 1 irrigo
An Altarful of Strangers not only is the Pair of Hushed Spidersilk Slippers and Nodule of Warm Amber upgrade card, but it has two additional options.
Old Sins is the Devious Henchman upgrade option with Thirst?. He is upgraded to a Ravenous Henchman for 1 Irrigo. Other players can use Look into the water a 250 Watchful Challenge rewarding 50 Whispered Hints (at .01 Echoes per, or .50 Echoes,) and 1 Extraordinary Implication (a 2.50 Echo item, or 3 Echoes total.) Failure gives 1 Whispered Hint. Success or failure cost 2 irrigo. Those who are Seeking the Name instead get +2CP Nightmares for 2 Irrigo.
What's often missing in Cave of the Nadir Planning is Nightmare and Dream mitigation. While it's counter-productive to normally raise Nightmares, doing so with a high enough total will draw additional cards and allow you to spend your other dream qualities to cash in other Fourth-Tier-Profession-Cost level items. The following are the other Nadir cards you can draw, the Nightmare Level required, and the Dream Quality it requires/spends for a reward: While the reward costs are identical, the ease of Nightmare rank access is related to both the frequency of use of the reward item. the Frequency of Dream cards over the others, and the note that Is Someone There? is the dream quality always reduced by -10 CP if you go insane in the Mirror marches (compared to -10 CP for all dream values if you go to the Hotel) unless spending fate to preserve them beforehand.
If in a pinch and you drew The Catafalquerie card, the A casket marked with a familiar name will double your Nightmares (and give you Extraordinary Implications from 1-your new Nightmare level) for 2 irrigo. Since when you leave the cave, your Nightmares drops below Fallen London 8+ Menace Zone levels (and should you go to Irrigo 10, it drops another change point at the cost of 50 cp of your other stats so don't do this for that alone, but for a high- Echo item.) Long reply short, if you have all the Dream values (and I think 10 CP is minimum Rank 4,) get Nightmares up to 6 total-even if wearing the Nightmare-raising hat only when drawing the Nadir cards to get the other options, as long as you have in Dream qualities listed before. if not, only do so if you have some of the dream values to what is needed, and note all cards draw on the highest above Nightmares ranking wanted or not.
And the not as universally accessible cards....
Lost at Sea has the option "I'll miss you." that requires you to be An Experienced Zailor 4 (with An Experienced Zailor 15 check) for 1 Touching Love Story (a 2.50 Echo item) at 2 irrigo (or just 2 Irrigo on failure,) "They'll take your limbs for trophies. Please." is 1 irrigo to play a story that removes the card. For Ambition: Light Fingers players past the Orphanage, or specifically, past The Sisters,) offers "It was the milk... it was the milk, wasn't it?", a Touching Love Story for 1 irrigo.
Losing's Dubious attribution requires a Journal of Infamy (a .50 Echo item) turning it into the Uncanny Incunabulum (a 12.50 Echo item) for 2 irrigo and -10 CP Watchful. Else, Just one's requires a Cryptic Clue (a .02 Echo item) is turned into an Extraordinary Implication (a 2.50 Echo item) for 1 Irrigo
Do you recall how they came to that place? is a tricky one. All options are 1 irrigo should there be any question. Sure, you can choose Who - and spend 5 An Identity Uncovered! for 1 equally priced Nodule of Trembling Amber, or the "non answer" - (the hyphen is a link there) for 1 Nodule of Warm Amber, but considering what it rewards and needs to convert, it's really a "wasted card." The only way to stop this from drawing however, is to have on hand 5 Diaries of the Dead and choose What - for 1 Nodule of Fecund Amber and do this 5 times. That's 1560 Echoes' worth of Diaries on however many cave visits spent to draw (a sixth time) the card and choose Why - for the Fluke-Core and permanently keeping it. Why? Because never selling it and keeping it in inventory permanently locks the card from drawing again. Selling the Core however re-introduces this card. While the story itself of the Axile promise made by the Bazaar and Masters is nice, it's not worth the cost; but getting rid of a bad card eventually is. Put this on your Annoyance list.
Old Bones gives you 1 Tale of Terror!! ( a .50 Echo item) for 2 Irrigo. Fate-locked players of the A Daughter in the Shadows get something more which I will not list here and ask all fate-Locked request items go to this thread.
And now the dregs. When you draw them, cry.... The Web offers a Yes/No (sometimes) answer option. No offers 1 Hard-Earned Lesson (up to 20) for 1 irrigo. Yes requires Putting the Pieces Together: the Drownies 1 or higher (and is received while on a Heist at The House on Cubit Square drawn 20% of the time from the A weeping maid card and losing 1 Burglar's progress for 1 CP of this value instead of Avoid her and gaining 1 progress,) and Grants 1 Sudden insight (up to 20) for 1 Irrigo. Not as bad as the below cards or no reward cards, but close for the cost.
Something Moves offers Can I help? which is a 100 Watchful Challenge. Success grants a Magnanimous increase up to 10 for 2 Irrigo. Failure increases Nightmares for 2 irrigo. "What do you see?" just gives 1 Irrigo to remove the card. Just avoid this card.
Unjustly imprisoned! (my favourite one to hate!) Recall where you are drops Watchful an unspecified amount of CP while giving 1 Appalling Secret (a .15 Echoes item) for 2 irrigo or Concentrate on escaping! drops all stats 1 CP for 1 Irrigo. Whatever the other cards do, even if it takes you to 10 irrigo, they offer something better.
That's all the cards. One last thing:
Finally, selling the cave often gets you a 312.50 item. Besides selling it (which if a new player, may absolutely be necessary,) you can often use the item to upgrade to a 5-card lodgings when not Christmas. This is especially true for the Sanctum One-time Location and M*****'s B***d with the Spire-Emporium. (However, two of the three residences off-season require PoSI tier 2 or a capped base stat and chosen specialization, and one requires an Impossible Theorem done only at high risk at the University, so maybe this season is the best way for those in immediate need of a five-card lodgings and need to sell the item for cash to get the items to raise Taste to their respective levels.)
That should do it. If you have any questions, ask him who I believe made the guide. of course, you can ask me (if you aren't crying trying to climb my wall of text.) edited by the truthseeker on 12/29/2015
