Exceptional Friends! A season of three Exceptional Stories begins with Flint.

The theme of this season is Heart's Blood. Both January and February’s stories will follow the theme, and each Exceptional Story in this season will grant a unique item, related to the theme.

If you’ve already completed Flint, you will have received the first item. You'll automatically get these items in the course of completing the story; you won't need to choose a particular ending.

At the end of the season, we'll release a new option in Fallen London. If you've collected all three items, you can trade them in for a substantial reward and a snippet of new story and lore.

If you want to keep the individual items as curios, you're welcome to do so! The option will remain available so you can cash them in later, if you choose to.

Flint will change over to the next Exceptional Story on 31 December, so sign up for a subscription before then to enjoy the whole season at the optimal cost.

The Art of Murder

Art of Murder is the Exceptional Story for January, and the second story in Heart’s Blood!

Wait, some of you never got to meet the Thief of Faces? Are you sure you didn't run into him?

....very sure?

How would you know, if you did?

Perhaps you did.

Exceptional Stories rarely give something unique, though this time we got a Vial of Murderer's Blood pretty early on into the story.

I wonder if The Society of Connoisseurs in Murder is still active on Fallen London. Such a fine institution should have thrived in the Neath, even if the Opium-Addled Essayist who made it famous died years before London fell.

It's the wrong trousers, Gromit!

Also, the themed story thing looks great. I can't wait to get started on Flint once Sackmas has passed.

So...is the story going to be about a rivalry between old-fashioned, artisan murderers and industrializing mass murderers? That's a very Failbetter way to explore the consequences of the Industrial Revolution.

@Manu Traveler: De Quincey died in '59, so not many years before London fell. His Society should still be around.
And interested parties may read the essay here: http://readbookonline.net/readOnLine/20972/ (it is, incidentally, hilarious)

Clearly the Bellicose Prince, the horse sized grub that he is, has turned to murder most foul!

More likely the Repentant Forger, overwhelmed by turpentine fumes and unruhe from stripping so many layers away from black canvases, has devolved into homicidal mania.

Which is apparently much less illicit than forgery in London these days...

I'm thinking it involves the Professor Denunciata making some surreptitious and unsolicited modifications to someone's Ratwork Velocipede.

Not at all Mal. All you need to do is have done the story portion that takes place at the House of Chimes. Beyond that, the story will remain unlocked for your playing enjoyment whenever you want.

I don't believe there ever was a suggestion that that might be possible. Or at least that's my understanding. Replaying stories has always been at least 3 months since the end of the relevant month so the usual timeframes would not work and there has never been any suggestion that there might be an exception for Heart's Blood.

Ah, so is the assumption that the Heart's Blood reward will be a limited time opportunity? Many of my friends have unlocked but not finished several of those stories (especially Flint, which is quite the time investment to make during the holiday season.) So that would good to announce so no one misses out on the reward they earned...

True, every story gives a unique quality which may or may not be reflected later down the line.

It felt strange that this season's stories circled around a character that I never met in person. Flint II & Art of Murder even looked like they were leading to him, but he never showed. I'm hoping the upcoming "snippet" gives us a glimpse, even if it's not a full denouement.

Do you promise? I'm not going to find out I've gotta feed a busload of orphans to a meat grinder and then pee on the remains in order to get the &quotgood&quot ending or cool reward? :P

  • No tangible rewards for that, though I'm sure the stone pigs will applaud your Sackmas spectacular...

Oh, man, that'd be great - I love The Set, and would adore to see more of them. (Sorry, NB - I sided with the Poet over the Modiste despite or perhaps because of the fact that she tattooed something obscene on my trousery area.)

You may not have actually lost it. You should still have the item you'll need to combine with the others for the big seasonal story reward(s). I seem to recall the text mentioning you giving what was asked for over, but the relevant/important item stays in your inventory.

If you sign up before the 31st, both Flint Part 1 and 2 should be available to play immediately. ON the 31st the new story comes out: from that day onwards you would have to buy Flint separately with fate.

The EF stories change over on the last Thursday of each month. It just happens that the last Thursday of this month is the 31st.

Confirm something for me: if one has started an Exceptional Story, does he have to finish it before the next one comes out? I've been a bit busy lately, so barely started Flint.
