I need a lot of them to do a statistic on a certain action, what is the best way to get a lot of them? Possibly without spending connections

I don't know how useful any of these will be, but:

- The best (profitable) "Cryptic Clues per action" type of Action I know of is A strange sort of prank on The Neaths Mysteries card, drawn in your Lodgings. It's a social action which gives both of you about 200 Cryptic Clues (the best option on that card for profit-making, I think) - but requires that you draw the card first, which means you can't spend all your Actions to grind with it.
- Similarly, if you have a Voluminous Library, one of the options there has a 50/50 chance of providing 75 Cryptic Clues (on a 'failure'), but again - opportunity card.
- If you have 1000 Nevercold Brass you can convert the brass into 500 Cryptic Clues (equal sale value, for one action) using a card drawn only in Ladybones Road. Though I think you'd be better off with the social action from the card in your lodgings, as it benefits two of you (and the person you send it to might be inclined to return the favour if they draw the card themselves.)
- If you do use that card and/or increase Connected: The Great Game to at least 15, you can Call In Favours in the Wolfstack Docks for 120 Cryptic Clues.
- If you're still progressing through the Labyrinth of Tigers, Scout out the Fourth Coil provides 55. You'll want to buy a Sneak-Thief's Mask for the occasion, though.

But it sounds like you'll be wanting ways to reliably grind the stuff. Hopefully someone else has more useful suggestions.

  • Unfinished Business in Spite's Eavesdropping offers 1-120 cryptic clues on a Success (and 2 cp Suspicion on a failure, but this failure amount needs to be confirmed. My thanks to yang573 for this!)

  • Unfortunately, Ladybones Road's Unfinished Business only offers 1-219 Whispered Hints cashing in 1 Appaling Secret. However, you can still cash them in for 200 CC, but as many will say, it's not worth doing this.

Best to use this site. While old, it's still used by most post-PoSI as the most reliable "end game" (then which was PoSI) grinding. A few of the amounts have been altered slightly since its listing and I have updated that in this reply.

  • Arthur's Pond Row across the pond is a repeatable "Time Passing" in the Labyrinth of Tigers' Second Coil for 50 CC once it's up to Time Passing in the Labyrinth 7 (with 1 cp wounds on a failure.)

  • Mahogany Hall's Variety is the spice of life Steal ideas from other theatres offers 50 CC on a success and raises the MH value (and gains 1 cp Plagued by a Popular Song on a failure.)

  • Hunter's keep Look more closely at the well Investigate offers 60 CC when you have Time Passing in the Southern Archipelago 7. Not recommended going there solely for CC.

As noted, the University is a treasure trove of options. Due to its extensive length, I'm spoilering the options I mined for you. Even if this no longer applies to you (you solved the murder whether you have university access or not,) this can be used by anybody else in the University seeking CC.
• A colleague with a problem offers 40 CC on a success (with 1 cp Nightmares on a failure) This always is available when you have access to the University.
If you haven't started Investigating somebody, the University is quite reliable, but offers only about 40-48 CC when the term passing is in the right phasing.

  • Prepare your Lectures Start on a publication offers 48 CC on a success (with no "rare success" offering a different item, and 1 cp Nightmares on a failure) This is the best option to mine CC in this phase of Term Passing.
  • Do Some Teaching Intermediary Correspondence, for the more advanced student offers 45 CC on a success and 2 cp Nightmares on a failure)
  • Do some actual research Learned discourse offers 44 CC on a success (and a rare success offers 44 CC and +1 cp SotC up to 7, and 2 cp Nightmares on a failure. This option is the reason many do not initially advance the University storyline until they cap the rare success SotC value if they are not using fate-Locked options to advance it.)
  • Demonstrate your cricketing knowledge offers 44 CC on a success when Term Passing is 8 and Benthic is 5 or higher (use to advance term passing when needed if mining CC, and one loses 5 cp Benthic on a failure.)
  • Back to the Library In the high stacks offers 44 CC on a success when Term Passing is 8-10 (use to advance term passing when needed if mining CC, and one loses 2 cp Benthic and Revolutionaries on a failure.)
(Other options could offer CC that are fate-locked via the Soul trade, but I cannot say if that is so or not. One may require to use non CC choices to advance Time Passing to a reset, but yu may choose any non CC options available when CC options are not listed as desired.)
As noted in the Learned Disclosure and other examples, the reason people don't progress this are the other goodies earned (including said SotC bump and Nightmare reduction, besides the item rewards,) and are often used for quite a while.

But if that "frivolous" carousel is gone, you can use these university options (same thing about phasing in term passing applies for all carousel options here) listed below. Do note that this is supposed to be used as building Investigating to cash in to advance the Featuring in the Tales of the University to find the murderer, but the Investigating can instead be turned in the Flit for rewards and therefore not advance the University storyline. Term Passing still will need to be "reset" now and then, but this can be done in perpetuity as long as the university is still at this phase:

  • Seek out some influential help on the murder investigation in its carousel yields 53 CC on a success (and 50 bottles of Greyfields 1882 making about a 1.50 Echoes investment,) but costs 2 correspondence plaques on a success or failure (and failure adds 2 cp of Scandal.)
  • Investigations in the university Head to the library offers 49 CC on a success (and a +2 cp Nightmares on a failure)
  • Investigations in the university Interview the suspects offers 50 CC on a success (and 1 cp nightmares on a failure.)
  • Investigations in the university Interview students and staff offers 52 CC on a success (and 1 cp Nightmares on a failure)
  • Investigations in the university Interview the Department of _______ staff offers 53 cc on a success (and 1 cp Nightmares on a failure)
  • Investigations in the university Conduct forensic analyses offers 55 CC on a success ( and lowers Investigating by 1 cp and 1 cp of Nightmares on a failure.) So far, this is the best option on this phase of the Term Passing University investigations.
  • Find allies at the Department of _______ Get the Semi-semiotic Fellow on your side offers 49 CC when Term Passing is 5 (use to advance to reset Term Passing, and is a 1 cp Nightmares on a failure.)

(Again, one may require to use non CC choices to advance Time Passing to a reset, but you may choose any non CC options available when CC options are not listed as desired.)
That should cover all "grindable" options not regularly turning in connections. I hope this helps!

Adding on to what people are saying, the card "The mechanics of progress" gives you anywhere from 1 to your modified watchful level in cryptic clues. You can't grind it per se, but it's useful nonetheless.

Actually, Unfinished Business in Spite offers the option "Eavesdropping" to gain 1-120 cryptic clues per action. That's probably your best option, save opportunity cards.

Most of the 'Unfinished Business in <Location>' options are pretty great for their respective bottom-tier items, imo. :-)

Talking to Cynthia at Hunter's Keep also gives Cryptic Clues (2-3 less than investigating the well, but that's still more than you can reliably get in London), so you can actually grind throughout the entire loop. Alternately, you can get Tales of Terror! if you keep talking to Cynthia instead of investigating, which can save you some effort if you were going to convert Clues to them, anyway.

If you raise Investigating... to 5 via "Interview the Department of ____ staff" and then immediately attempt to cash out your Investigating via "Raid a message drop" in the Flit, you will get an average of 535 Cryptic Clues and 1 point of Suspicion in an average of 6 actions. (Someone can check my math, but I'm pretty sure that's close if not spot on.)

It's one of the most profitable grinds in the game (~1.7-1.8 echoes per action on average, depending on how you get rid of suspicion) and it gives you only Cryptic Clues, so it's very nice for that purpose if you're at the right stage of the University storyline. It does depend a bit on luck, but not brutally so.

If you have Shadowy between 81 and 118, another really useful card is "A new piece in the game..." since it gives you 4 points of both Seeking and Investigating. With that card you can spend 2 actions to start both Seeking and Investigating, wait to draw the card four times, and then cash those qualities in for 536 Cryptic clues. This takes 7 actions, but there's no chance of failure like there is with the above method -- instead, you just have to wait for the card to show up four times, and keep your Shadowy in the right range.

Combined with one of the suggestions in http://community.failbettergames.com/topic21306-best-use-of-cryptic-clues.aspx (buying low-quality diamonds from Empire Adornments for the rare success), this seems particularly profitable. A pity it requires Featuring in the Tales of the University 9, as I'm well past that point now.

What other items have a more profitable conversion than outright selling? I'm thinking things like jade and silk scraps.

Trading Jade, Rostygold, or Amber to the Tiger-Keeper for Whispered Hints isn't strictly profitable, only giving 11 echoes of Hints for 10 echoes of goods. However if you have a surplus of any of the above it's quite good for getting expedition supplies, and grinding one of those items and trading may be more efficient than getting Hints directly another way.
