Hello everyone! I'm a bit thickheaded when it comes to lore in general, and FL lore is no exception. At the moment, I am writing a story that takes place in the Neath, and I need some guidance. What are the very basic snippets of lore that every citizen of the Neath must know?

Thank you in advance!

  • I started a wee blog for this purpose - I've completely failed to keep it updated, I admit, but it has some super-basic basics along the lines of "this is the city, this is how you walk around it, yes we know it's kind of weird that there's an underground city full of monsters but we just get on with our lives as best we can." I've had a post about the economy half-finished for months - someone poke me and remind me to finish it.

Short of Failbetter making a link for this, I defer to Spacemarines9 and Nitebrite as to the sages of the norm. Thanks to them both now and throughout the years.

Speaking of great and all-knowing Spacemarine9, some time ago I made a list with links to /almost/ all his lore posts, it may be useful. It is even moderately organized.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd be interested if you could provide feedback on which resources you find to be particularly useful or not useful and why. Just general opinion stuff is needed really. It's not every day we get a fresh and new player in who wants to learn the lore basics right away, so your perspective on this matter would be most informative when it comes to the future development of further resources.

On what specifically would you like feedback? Everything?

Nothing specific. Just as you use these resources if you see room for improvement or if something is exceptionally useful it'd be good to know. I am thinking of making a quick reference that takes the best bits from these larger resource collections.

Well, I found the Sunless Sea Lore Glossary to be incredibly helpful, as it clarifies the actual definition of terms I'd heard tossed about but could not quite grasp. It didn't contain spoilers despite being something that lends itself to it, so bonus points there! The only objection would be that more terms could be added to make it a tad more comprehensive.

The Fifth City Wiki is very organized and seems to have a lot of lore concentrated in one spot, which is very efficient and convenient! I don't really see how this could be improved, except maybe a little bit in the aesthetics department.

Woah! I really love the FL Resource Post! It doesn't just limit itself to in-game lore and points newbies towards the community also. I'd make this one of the "must-see" resources, along with your glossary.

Saint-Arthur is extensive, but feels hard to maneuver when you are looking for something specific (unless you happen to stumble upon a post on google, in which case you generally find exactly what your are looking for).

Is this helpful, Miss NiteBrite? smile

Yes, thank you very much Agatha. Ever since we heard FBG announce there was going to be an iOS app release in the near future we've all been working very hard here in the community, each in our own way, to prepare the appropriate resources necessary to provide a welcoming environment for the expected flood of new friends on its way. I'm glad to hear it looks like we are moving in the right direction even if it has left us spread a little thin. Everyone here is hoping and wanting the iOS launch will go as smoothly as possible and be a big success. smile

Saint-Arthur is indeed very disorganized. There are some tags for certain categories of lore, but not all relevant posts are so tagged and there aren't many categories. In my view he's a great resource if you have a specific question and don't see the answer somewhere obvious, but though browsing can give new snippets finding something specific is almost impossible. The only times I've really been able to find something more than a few days old is when I either want detailed information on a well-defined subject someone will definitely have asked about, or if I remember seeing a specific post so I have some clue of what to search.

I consider the difficulty of finding past posts a failing of tumblr, not Spacemarine. Much like this forum, if I need to find anything I skip the woefully inadequate built-in search and turn to google, using the 'site' search tool.

    For example: site:saint-arthur.tumblr.com correspondence
    or
    site:community.failbettergames.com "liberation of night"

Yep, I use google as well for actually finding anything on there more than a couple pages back. That serves very well for general topics like your example of the correspondence, but more specific or newer things aren't going to reliably show up in the results if they even exist there. Hooray for being able to ask ourselves.

Can you believe I'd never thought of that before? Good God, I must be dumber than a brick. And I was fully aware of that function beforehand, too! Thanks for the reminder!

Dumber than a brick isn't necessarily dumb. For example, Brick from Discworld was at one point as smart as a supercomputer :P
