"You unlocked this with 110 Calamitous Bloatworms (you needed 50)"
Hurray! You can begin the Bloatworm Picnic. But what will happen to those 50 bloatworms? Will you see this message?
"You've lost 50 x Calamitous Bloatworms (new total 60)"
or this?
"You've lost 10 x Calamitous Bloatworms (new total 100)"
or will you keep them all?
We've all been there; we all know how hard it is to manage your Bloatworms (and Rostygold, and Connected: the Church, and so on) with the Fallen London UI. So we're rolling out a change to make it clearer. Once the change is complete, any unlocks where you keep the quality ('Requirements') will be marked with a little padlock, and any where you use up the quality ('Costs') will be marked with a little price tag.
Q. I can see the change in the UI, but not many things seem to have become Costs yet. Yup, the UI change comes ahead of all the furkling in the back end we need to do to make this work.
Q. Why a price tag? why not a little pile of coins / cross / greyed out icon? We tested loads! it's really hard to find something that says 'this will be spent', especially cross-culture. We're always up for more suggestions, though.

Thanks everyone for your discussion and feedback, and for sending tickets - you are excellent.
Unfortunately, this isn't a straightforward change, and our developers are currently fully occupied with the Fallen London mobile port and Sunless Sea expansion.
As an interim measure, we've added an indication of how many Crates of Expedition Supplies the player has to the storylet text of archaeological expeditions, since this is the example that has been brought up most often; we'd welcome suggestions for other branches or storylets that would particularly benefit from this.

Yeah, seeing all the complaints here, I thought I'd just wait a day or two for them to fix it (edit: meaning, it not telling you how many of a thing you have), but, uh...it's still broken. (Whether or not it was an intentional change.) It's been several days. I've been grinding for most of those several days, so I haven't really needed to know, but like, on the occasion I have, it's been nearly intolerable. Exceptionally grating and obnoxious. edited by Erhannis on 11/21/2015

I never noticed this change as I had no reason to visit these three places during last week. Now that I have noticed, I can only say: if the way it's currently working is the way it was intended, then it is a horribly bad change!!
As it is, I don't believe you've intendend it this way, and are working towards fixing it. There, I trust you! Don't make me regret that. edited by phryne on 11/21/2015

Maybe they're waiting to see if we get used to it? I'm personally not used to it. The change could be great, but without the tooltip telling you how much you have in total it's just frustrating.

Given the nature of the Grand Hunt (having stuff is not a requirement), it probably won't shows on a price tag.
Edit: Just checked out the revamp. I do not like this at all - it is like, now it is a little bit easier to tell what you need to pay for, but then you fork over the money and discover you lost the ability to count how much you have left.
There is ample space on the result screen, which saves us the need for mouseover. The new price tags are not bad, but if they come at a cost of removing easily read information than they are just clogging up the requirement space. edited by Estelle Knoht on 11/14/2015

Agreed with everyone else that the information removed was actually very useful at the place it could originally be found.
As it happens, I don't particularly care for the change, personally I always found the costs of an action easy to understand at a glance, but if it's part of a development for iOS, well, what can you do.

I love the price tag icon as it actually tells me how much I will spend, but I really miss the post information dump that let you know how much you had left. I hope that they bring that component back in addition to the tag that they replaced it with.

Frankly I don't feel too good about the "we are tied elsewhere but we'll fix it later" response.
When the new feature breaks something in the game, you press the button and roll it back until you fix it and test it again, you don't just put it on hold to maybe fix later while leaving it broken in the game.
Just my opinion, of course.

Now that I'm back into running expeditions I'm really starting to miss the availability of that information. I try to keep at least 50k Whispered Secrets at all times, and having to go to my inventory periodically to make sure I haven't lost track is starting to wear on me.

Yeah, we definitely need to have the "You have X" message added in parentheses after the "This will cost X" message, and I still want to see what my new total is after spending a resource without having to click try again or checking my inventory.

Absolutely - this missing info is a real problem. I've just converted a bunch of secrets into diamonds at the Bazaar Side-Streets and the interface wouldn't tell me how many Cryptic Clues I still had, and didn't give a message that they were spent either!

Am I going loopy or did you get rid of the "You've lost 50 x Something (new total 27638). "message as well? Seems so, at least in the Forgotten Quarter. I was preparing for an expedition and didn't get to see how many items of the commodity I still had left. Which is pretty inconvenient.
Or is this just not fully implemented yet? Or a bug?

Ah, I'm glad it's not just me.
I just noticed this today and found it very inconvenient. I'm needing to finally grind certain objects for several objectives, but hovering over the items only tells me what I need and not what I have . . . it means I have to go onto 'Myself' to see what I do/don't have, then do mental maths to work out the difference, whereas before a quick hover over told me all I needed to know.
I never really found it confusing enough before to justify a 'requirements/costs' feature, either, which means my inner OCD is set off by seeing a clutter of messy looking 'unlock' items, whilst my player side has to spend twice as long looking for what I need.
It was fun at first, but now I actually need to do stuff -? It's a bit of a drag.

Since then, I found the changes to be less intuitive and needlessly complex. I mean, it's not a big deal -- but why keep trying to fix what's not broken. The latest, with the extra icons, just looks cluttered to me. Anyway, not a big deal, I'll get used to it as well.
But please bring the remaining quantity info back! That's actually functional.

From what Hannah said above this appears to have been a mostly unintended consequence that has a technically difficult solution. So it's unfortunate but I have every faith in FB to address this in due course. I think my main complaint is with how long it's taken to acknowledge that it's a serious issue. I think if it was flagged significantly earlier that it's just a case of solving a difficult technical issue a lot of disappointment would have been saved and ill feeling avoided

So, I've only discovered this two days ago and wanted to test it a bit instead of complaining right away...
I have to say it's a strange decision by the devs to remove those bits of information. While it is only mildly irritating during "normal" play, the consequences for things like Expeditions are really very annoying. And since this change is planned to be implemented across London, "things like..." would include Heists, Short Story Writing and probably a handful of others which I can't think of now. I'm not sure whether this would also affect things like Fascinating.../Investigating... ?
So, we DEFINITELY need an exception for those stories where you have to keep track of a "special quality" (don't know what else to call them, sorry) like Expedition Supplies, Potential, Escape Routes/Inside Information etc. Because playing these stories becomes totally frustrating when you can't immediately see every change to those qualities.
If they implement that, the rest is probably something we'd get used to. Though I have to repeat, I don't see WHY they would do this in the first place! Hannah's original announcement in this thread was about "rolling out a change to make things clearer", instead they've made them more confusing. I'd rather have too much information about what I'm gaining/losing before/after playing an action than too little. And once this goes live across all areas they're basically asking to be swamped by bug reports from confused players who don't read the forum!
I might put this in an email too, but I'd wager the sheer number of complaints on this issue would have directed Failbetter's attention to this thread by now... edited by Amélie Vaincœur on 11/26/2015

Just got a Magnificent Diamond on my 10th try at buying a bag of low quality diamonds. So the rare success is still possible - the RNG is just being unkind to you.
I definitely agree with others that not having the number of items used and that you have remaining in the results is not a good change. I don't want to have to keep checking my inventory to see what I have.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I just came across this while reading up on some old exceptional stories and I didn't see a final update on this and its current state leaves me confused.
When I first read this I thought I had somehow managed to find a feature I had completely missed until now, so I quickly went to check. To my disappointment I couldn't find anything like what was described here. What happened to this?
Apparently there was an issue with not being able to see how many items you owned 3+ years ago. Was this feature rolled back because of that? Because all I can currently see in game on the vast majority of branches is "You need X/You unlocked this with X" (no indication of cost anywhere).
But why then, after more than three years, there are still storylets like "Stop in at the Horse-Steak Club", "Call at the Offices of Baseborn & Fowlingpiece, Solicitors at Law" and such that use the half-finished system (Only show costs, not items owned), while the other half of the storylets in the same location use a different system (Show unlock requirements and items owned, but not costs)? And why do some branches still never indicate the items lost after playing them?
Is this just something that was planned and partially implemented 3 years ago and then mostly, but not fully rolled back, only to be abandoned? This seems like such a useful feature to have if only the upsides of both systems were combined into one tooltip. edited by Monara on 12/11/2018

The cost change is not to my taste currently, but the requirement change is fine. If it's not too much of a hassle, I would like to agree with the others that bringing back the detail of showing how much one has in cost for the mouseover icon and showing what was used and left over in the result page would improve the cost change significantly and I'd be more accepting of it.

Really, the scroll over text "This costs 3 bloatworms" makes the new icons completely redundant. The new icons to me, also really block immersion, the flow of Fallen London, and the aesthetic. But none of that's an issue if the icons aren't needed anymore! Honestly, I feel pretty passionate about this, even if I'm not being exceptionally verbose or eloquent on the matter.

I too am echoing the replies (pun intended) that we ned our remaining resources reinstated on the results screen. havng to go to multiple tabs when staying in the same area is counter-productive to "saving time to see if we have enough to buy the item" changes discussed here. lady ciel wrote:

I can confirm that when Someone is Coming drops to zero, you don't get a message.
Speaking of robbing the drunken rat, can anyone confirm that the rare success chance to get a Ratwork Watch still exists? I've done this at least daily for several months. Plenty of Surface Currency. No Ratwork Watch.
My youngest alt got a Ratwork Watch about 3 weeks ago.
Two things on this: 1)As noted with rare Successes replies quoted here and elsewhere, the changes have not altered rare Successes; if you have not gotten any of them, it's a RNG rare chance of often 2% or less and your luck is just bad. The Ratwork Watch (while not as rare seemingly as drawing the Skin of the Bazaar card in the Side-Streets) is an exceptionally rare success at 1.29%. 2) We really need to have any and all "connection" qualities list when they are gone, "Someone is Coming" included. edited by the truthseeker on 11/16/2015

A bit off-topic but have recent changes included making the Overgoat cost 2x Sudden Insights instead of just 1, for a second chance?
I got a strange message on the re-try that I didn't have enough actions (re-tries shouldn't COST any actions, they're already spent on the 1st try if you ticked the second chances tick-box?) But it tried to charge me twice and couldn't, so it took me to the Oops something went wrong error-screen..
So now I've been taken back to the card page for the Overgoat again as if the card wasn't used yet. With the option to spend second chances again.. Grrr. edited by Shalinoth on 11/17/2015

I'm usually a fan of Fallen London and how Failbetter Games operates, but I have only two words regarding the missing info from cost qualities and conclusions: unmitigated disaster.
Highlighting costs as opposed to requirements is an excellent idea. Not telling how much of the item is available is bad. A trip to "Myself" tab is in order now every time something costs something? Removing "now have" conclusions is horrid - and unjustifiable. edited by Alistair Cray on 12/2/2015

I would put forward that with over a million words of fiction, in so very many snippets, with so very many items both inside and outside the bazaar... The flow charts must be hellacious to contemplate, nigh Sisyphean. The unlock/costs is nice, I will say, but in some ways I ENJOYED the anxiety of not knowing what I would lose. But that is just me, one opinion, and not large enough nor problematic enough for either me or the developers to feel is urgent.
So best of luck and cheers to the wondrous L.Bs that make up the Failbetter team! Tinkering away like mad with the gears of hypertext and hidden escapements of cybertext. If you think we players make a fuss about this stuff, believe you me, they fret even more! So I am patient, and the alteration tastes more cosmetic to me than essential. Because more often than not the 'Neath is mysterious and unpredictable. And I am just barely getting started.

Thank you!
The big thing that comes to mind for me is purchasing Bazaar Side-Street items. Less vital than expeditions, but it's been a major stumbling block.

Thanks Lady Ciel and RandomWalker for confirming the rare success is still a thing.
I'm fine with a streak of bad luck (I've also had streaks of good luck). It's just that with the change to how these options now present the success (i.e. without indicating the lost items) I was concerned it might have affected rare successes somehow.

I'm really liking all the changes you have been putting out recently (like this, and the outfits). Playing on mobile makes it really hard to mouse over images and see the tooltips, and it is similarly difficult to swap hats on a smartphone. I feel like you are moving to a more intuitive and mobile-friendly design, which I'm very happy about!

How will this work for things where you require multiple quality requirements, but only some are used (such as needing Connections only to qualify, but you're spending some of your bloatworms)? Would you get both a price tag and a lock? And how would you tell which is being spent?

Hannah, in your example you differentiated between losing all 50 or only 10. But the Unlock/Price-tag is binary, right? So the uncertainty of whether we lose all requirements or just some remains.
But at least we know if -any- or none are lost. That's a great improvement.

I appreciate Miss Crumpet's comment - All five cards on one line would be -beautiful-.
Like others here, I appreciate the clarity (from the League of Clarity, no doubt) added to the game. Despite the fact that the much echoed 'we never knew we needed this but we did', I find myself much more interested in where I can get these 'Calamitous Bloatworms', as I'm sure they could be useful in all kinds of situations. Maybe behind the mirrors, for instance. Or on the upcoming trek towards Flint later in the month. Are these available somewhere?

This would give me such immense happiness, bytheby. I cannot tell you how many times in the Affair of the Box, I have accidentally clicked something I didn't mean to. One faction's option can be either the top option or the bottom option, and it leads to rather disastrous misunderstandings...

Casing is an interesting usability example, because some choices that require it will take only part of your Casing (like Thefts of Exceptional Character) in varying amounts depending on whether you succeed or fail at a quality check, while others set your Casing to 0 no matter how much you have, like ashdenej says. I guess this goes to show: adding some information to an interface like this to clarify it reveals further ambiguities that might mislead people! It's a bit of a wormcan.

Absolutely - this missing info is a real problem. I've just converted a bunch of secrets into diamonds at the Bazaar Side-Streets and the interface wouldn't tell me how many Cryptic Clues I still had, and didn't give a message that they were spent either! After 70 conversions of Cryptic Clues into diamonds, I have not encountered the rare success (Magnificent Diamond) even once. The chance of that happening is 2.75%.
Of course, it might just be that I've had a really long stretch of bad luck (2.75% is definitely possible), but with these changes to these actions (the result text doesn't even display the Cryptic Clues loss anymore), I'm concerned that this has impacted the rare success of this option (either deliberately or as a side effect). I'll stop converting any more clues into diamonds until someone can confirm that the old rare success is still in play.

It seems an odd change to add another 'how many CoES we have total', when we already had that.

Just my opinion, of course. Agreed.
