I've been a POSI for a fair bit now, but focus is definitely not my strong suit. After spending far too long in the forgotten quarter trying to find an eyeless skull(no luck - if i want one, i'm going to have to go begging), i'm rethinking my priorities. I still don't have one of the high level lodgings, and i'm leaning toward the bazaar, although certainly i am intrigued by the royal bethlehem as well. For seasoned players, what would be the best thing for me to concentrate on next - the best lodging secrets can buy, or beginning to delve into the cave? My other thought was to dig more into my ambition (nemesis), as i have let that fall by the wayside for a fair time. i realize we all pinball about differently, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There are alternatives available! The Royal Bethlehem has a discount option on the merry gentleman card (requires 5 Nightmares), the Premises at the Bazaar's cheaper option can be found in the Bazaar Side-streets, and the Brass Embassy's alternative is found on the Hell faction card.

Pretty much what was already posted:
Focus on getting a 4-card lodging ASAP as not only does that allow you to "bank" more cards you can save until you need them (or keep them from your deck by holding onto them) you can get 5-card lodgings much more easily starting next month for Sackmas, as well as draws for more scrap I will discuss later.
As noted, you can easily do one or even two 5-card lodgings this way instead of having to get things like the near-impossible, impossible theorem or very costly Location of the One-time prince of hell or Master's blood to update to a 5-card lodging.
(There may be a debate on which is the best to upgrade first, but since the Sackmas Brass Emporium upgrade requires you to lose your soul, and the Bazaar spire upgrade requires Master's Blood but the Hotel upgrade requires the very difficult to get at the University at a significant loss of components more that it's worth Impossible Theorem, it would be best to grind for 50 Antique Mysteries, get Nightmares to 5 [or buy/earn 40,000 drops of Honey if you have not already more antique mysteries] and get a Royal Beth room, then upgrade it to a 5-card Lodgings at Sackmass for only 7 Lacre taste and 3 Notability.)
As noted, these options require Notability, so the other thing you should do in tandem is gain BDR to convert MW to Notability items.
This means getting a respectable townhouse and then (likely) a Salon or (if you don't mind paying for it by Echoes directly for its use) an Orphanage. As noted elsewhere, many people who decide to get the orphanage do so for the fate-locked Laconic Prodigy companion and often ( before some upgrades to useful professions now) shuttered it and bought a Townhouse. if you are ghoing simply for Making Waves boosts quickly, grind for a Salon as your end goal.
Another thing you can do to help BDR is to save up money and buy in the Bazaar the most expensive items you can afford that also give BDR in regards to multiple slot purchases. It's a bit of a balancing act since if you buy the top-tier items you get that high stat bump as well as BDR, but it's better overall to start to get as many BDR in as many slots first, as long as you know your goal is the high-end top stat items also giving BDR, until you have earned the sidestreet equivalents or profession options if better. For now, getting the bunch of slots clothing at the Bazaar with BDR is a good start.
As suggested, God's Editors is a good first one, as well as you choosing a Club. You may also work on getting the Nadir access as noted (as many of the decent items you can earn there are worth some stat loss, but it is a hassle to get the final access to it and worth getting that access. Should you have the Fate, it's worth buying the access for an item you can sell for a pretty penny. Selling the cave also can get you one of the items needed for updating to a 5-card lodgings the non-holiday way, it can be unwisely sold if you absolutely need the money, but is not recommended unless you have one 5-card lodgings already as was my case a year ago with one of my characters. Getting 3000+ scraps is not easy which is the only alternate to getting the items outside of fate-locked adventures, and that scraps option is done best by getting as many 4 card lodgings to play the scrap option as well as orphan calling in Favours in the Flit drawing cards there for that card, but I digress.)
The ship grind is long and costly, best done later. But if you can afford the cost to getting to choosing your ship, you can cheaply buy a tramp steamer for now and use the zailing oiptions to go to the islands where a lot of items hard to get here are easier in places like Mutton island or Polythreme (especially romantic notions and silk there.)Zailing also improves your sailing talent which can help with a card in the Nadir eventually, as well as make journeying by boat faster, but I digress. Also, once you have ground for Safe-conduct via the Counting the Days carousel, you can go to the iron republic and get a journal which is +2 BDR in a weapon slot, very nice indeed. Often you have to pay a lot of fate for a +4 BDR item like The Ratwork Velocipede in the Velocipede Squad or Empyrean Redolence with the Labyrinth/Flute Street eventually gets you. And yes, you can sell the Steamer when ready for a better ship.
A spouse is the absolute last thing you should get: the free npc ones don't give much and no Bizarre/Dreaded/Respectable. The fated ones are either not worth it or very costly in fate to be worth it (I'm looking at you devils and boneless consort.) The PC one is a bit better but takes an exceptionally long wedding to plan if you want good returns. I mean exceptionally, no hyperbolae.
Same goes for Home comforts in regards to the cost versus what they give, even with Fate purchased ones unless the fate offers a BDR option. The exception is Midnighter profession as it's the only non-fate BDR home Comfort and worth the investment to get the profession if interested in that watchful path (that is if you can buy equivalent weapon stats for shadowy and watchful as that +9/+9 and +1 dreaded item goes away when you leave Agent for Midnighter.)
Other transportation you should focus on first is the Clay Chair or the Landau. The former is easier to get and many do this first, leaving the other one for secondary goals like another opp card.
To sumerize, if you focus on a Club and affiliation first, you get a +8 BDR reward for nobility. with a Salon or orphanage, this easily makes Nobility go to 7 let alone the 3-5 you may need for a lodging or two's upgrade this season. Add that to weekly Nadir runs and maybe a ship ride occasionally, you'll be doing well as a starting POSI. Add a non-ship Transportation, and you'll be set for many a month to come!

I'd go for one of the 4-card Lodgings and afterwards get as much Bizarre/Dreaded/Respectable as you can to make it easy to attain Notability 3 or 4.

Expanding on the advice above, I suggest that you first work on the Membership of God's editors as your first BDR item. It has a solid + 4 to Respectable and has an opportunity card that reduces both Nightmares and Scandal while giving some little Connected:Church.

Don't grind a goat until you're max stat and have everything else sorted. Money comes quicker with higher stats.
1 get a 4 card lodging. Make it a very high priority, as Sacksmas is coming soon, and upgrading your four card lodging is easier then than any other time of year. Royal Beth may be faster than the Bazaar, but you may end up wanting both eventually.
2. God's editors - useful, easy BDR
3 I'd suggest stat grinding, with an aim to get a gang of hoodlums. They're very expensive, but will make grinding a lot of other, useful, stuff much cheaper and easier in the long run (thefts of a particular character in the Flit).
4. Work through storylines, such a velocipede squad if you want to spend fate, or finish the Jack storyline, or affair of the box.

Crossing the POSI barrier certainly opens up a wealth of options and it can be difficult to know where to start.
1) Upgrading your lodgings will give you new ways to acquire certifiable scraps, which you'll need in large quantities need to buy a number of special items. At Christmas, you can upgrade this further for a much cheaper price than you can during the rest of the year, which will let you hold 5 cards in your hand. As this is a once-a-year opportunity and a 5-card lodging is incredibly useful when inside the Cave of the Nadir, I would make this your priority - if you can manage to get both a bazaar emporium and a room at the royal beth before the wicket closes, so much the better.
2) The cave of the nadir is a Fun Spooky Time with the possibility of earning a fair chunk of echoes once a week. It's particularly helpful if you're grinding airag or searing enigmas in pursuit of a larger goal like the impossible theorem. Keep in mind it takes a bite out of your stats though. Having a 5-card lodging improves your chances of drawing profitable cards, so I'd focus on that first if you can. Incidentally if you do decide to sell the location of the Nadir, keep in mind that a) you can only do this once, so pick your faction wisely and b) the items you receive are very costly to obtain through other routes, so unless you already have them I wouldn't just flog them for echoes. And there's a forum thread dedicated to giving out skulls to people in need, so ask there and see if you can find a kindly soul to throw you a bone, as it were.
3) If you want to upgrade your profession, your going to need Notability. As others have said, that means increasing your BDR, so gathering the materials for the various items available in the sidestreets (club, transport etc) should be your first step here. There are a few good guides to notability and BDR floating about on the forums if you want to know more.
4) The ambitions are gradually reaching their end points, so it might be fun to catch up to the content boundary so you're ready to go as soon as the end is available. This will probably involve some heavy grinds, too.
Anyway, the best thing is probably to pick a concrete goal which appeals (get lodgings, upgrade profession, finish x storyline, get an impossible theorem) and follow the steps you need to make it there - you'll pick up a lot along the way. In terms of your immediate aims, you could do a lot worse than to try and grab a lodging to upgrade when Christmas comes.

The alternative options are cheaper. If you're closer to getting there with whispered secrets, and are really in a hurry, the fastest way to get masses of whispered secrets is to earn amber in Mahogany Hall burning stuff for Japser and Frank, and then converting that into whispered secrets with the Tiger Keeper in the Labyrinth.

with some pretty dedicated grinding with thefts of a particular character and converting most of the whispers i had collected into echoes and (eventually) to permits, i am the proud new owner of lodgings at the bazaar! I'm not going to lie - it was a nice little thrill when that extra card slot appeared!! Still hoping to get the room at the bethlehem by sackmas as well, when i'll do my utmost to get that coveted 5th card slot!

The best wedding requires Planning equivalent to 500,000 rats. Getting a head start on grinding couldn't hurt, but I'm pretty sure that unfinished business in Spite's PoSI option to steal rats is much faster.

thank you all for the advice - looking over it all, i definitely think the next step is going to be to grind for a 4 card lodging and try to manage it before sackmas. i've already joined a club (parthenaeum), done the marriage thing, am in with gods editors, and I have a lovely zee clipper. I've also got the clay sedan and the landau, so i've got a good start on the BDR bit. Other than straight up purchasing the 4 card locations from the land agency in the baazar, are there other/less expensive ways to come by those lodgings? And if not, what is the best source for whispered secrets in large amounts? (i've got about 40k at the moment, so i'll need to double down to purchase the bazaar lodgings, but i'm much closer to that then any of the other 4 card digs)
