Rats are very useful if you want to marry a player, though. Grinding rats through Unfinished Business is by far the most efficient way to raise Planning a Wedding.

with some pretty dedicated grinding with thefts of a particular character and converting most of the whispers i had collected into echoes and (eventually) to permits, i am the proud new owner of lodgings at the bazaar! I'm not going to lie - it was a nice little thrill when that extra card slot appeared!! Still hoping to get the room at the bethlehem by sackmas as well, when i'll do my utmost to get that coveted 5th card slot!

Should I stockpile rats as a pre-posi and become a rat-catcher for the time being instead? I don't have someone I want to marry, yet, but!

Stockpiling isn't a bad idea if you've a mind for future matrimony, but I wouldn't become a Rat-Catcher just to fund a future wedding. Still, if you're undecided as to what higher level profession you want to pursue, there's worse ways to go than Rat-Catcher, considering how useful a stockpile of Strong-Backed Labour will be when you become a PoSI. There are other tier 2 professions that give good components for PoSI crafting, though.

The best wedding requires Planning equivalent to 500,000 rats. Getting a head start on grinding couldn't hurt, but I'm pretty sure that unfinished business in Spite's PoSI option to steal rats is much faster. edited by Optimatum on 11/15/2015

This is similar to what I did for Pyro's wedding but in that case he was already a Rat Catcher for a few weeks when he and his partner started preparing for the wedding so he already have a handsome stockpile ready.
Like what the others said, I do suggest becoming a POSI first before preparing for a wedding since it open certain "unfinished business" which can help you gather more items.

ah grinding....somehow both deeply satisfying and endlessly taxing at the same time. With some serious morning/noon/night attention, i've now managed to acquire the room at the royal beth as well as lodgings in the bazaar (didn't hurt that i was a good halfway to both of them without realizing it). I should be well set heading into sackmas, though i shall do my utmost to make sure i'm well positioned to take the fullest advantage of the season. next quest: work to maximize notability. i'm currently stalled at 4. i have gods editors, a clay sedan, a club, an orphanage and a landau, along with a ship and a spouse. I'm trying to keep my MW up, but what is the best way to get the next bump up in notability - i REALLY want to upgrade my career to corespondent, and that extra bloody point is all i need. Seriously, i'm holding the unsigned message card like a talisman promising better days ahead. suggestions or links to other threads (i've looked, i promise-i just think i'm not typing in the right words to unveil the answer) would be most welcome!! p.s. - grinding on an iPhone makes me yearn - yes, YEARN for the app! i cannot wait for early 2016 when my addiction to fallen london can be easily slaked on a regular basis!

Assuming you've already gotten as much BDR gear from the Bazaar as you can, the next steps would be obtaining an Unfinished Hat and an Iron Republic Journal. Both allow you to squeeze an extra BDR into the Companion and Weapon slots, respectively. Beyond that, you'd need to spend Fate or create an Ubergoat to obtain more BDR.
As far as generating MW goes, my preferred methods are Private Suppers, Item conversions, and Heists.

^ Ubergoats require fate too :y
Attending parties from a Polite Invitation gives lots of making waves and connected: society, as well as every so often giving you your choice of a Favor in High Places or a Personal Recommendation. The Hallowmas option on the One's Public card gives MW based on your level of newspaper fame, the highest option giving 7-14 CP. There's at least one profitable action in Court that gives MW as well if you're still welcome there. Stealing Tales of Terror!! in the Flit and converting them all the way up to Enigmas gives a lot, though that requires being welcome at the University. Side-converting tier 3? items around is slightly profitable and many if not all conversions give MW. Building up your Scheme: An Orphanage from the Townhouse card lets you spend a bunch for large amounts of MW, though the Salon is slightly better for getting MW. (Having an Orphanage compensates with slightly better stats and a Fate option to buy the best Dangerous/Shadowy/Watchful companion, not counting Goats.) The Rooms Above a Gambling Den card has a good option to spend some wine and a night on the town for a bunch of MW and most other lodgings cards have similar but less efficient options.

Before I contribute my answer harbourlady, congratulations on obtaining your two four-card residences, your current Notability and the assorted BDR items so far! Also, you might be interesting in these two links: This one is a PoSI crafting guide (mobile link instead is here) and this other one is "end game grinding" created a while ago when stats were capped a lot lower and closer to where you are now and still holds up for all post-PoSI players today.
Regarding the Notability point, only the Making Waves value increases Notability, while more B/D/R items equipped of higher (both total and of individual in a certain slot) value lowers that required value gateway per point. it doesn't matter for Notability if you swap a +2 Bizarre specific slot item with a +3 respectable in that slot as it all increases the total value. (However, some cards and stories do use a specific Bizarre, Dreadful or Respectable value check of which you should use the single highest value for that check, but I digress.) I'll link all the Making Waves increases here. Some may or may not be available depending on your character's progress of lack thereof or retirement of said options.
The "most profitable return" of Making Waves (referred to as MW from now on) is your Townhouse's Scheme options. In your case, that's an Orphanage. Sadly, for those who own it, it often is the most expensive So if not clear, that means literally paying a lot of Echoes for one option, or paying yet even more Echoes for fewer points for the other option (since the orphan on that option listed is over 64 Echoes) instead of using items like Favours in High Places/Stolen Kisses and Connected Society/Bohemian for the cost. So, no directly converted items from turns but items grinded/earned to sell to use/buy the Echoes/characters needed to enable the scheme planning. In your grinding case, the best option is to grind Affair of the Box working for the people getting Mourning Candles/Correspondence Plaques and turning them in for Echoes when you have free turns to use. But you may need to get Stolen Kisses, see below later regarding cross conversion. Your best non-grinding and free earning case is to get the highest profession tier you can (with up to Notability 5 and a 300 Stat check needed, or Notability up to 3 needed if you choose the direct 70 Echoes a week Doctor or Notary, but neither option branches consume Notability for Profession changes; ) and cash in as many of the items you can gained weekly that are not needed in your Side-Streets quests as well as monthly turning in 4 Professional Perks for a Trade Secret and turning that in with 10 turns for "...Something Else" for a 62.50 Echoes sold Searing Enigma plus five 12.50 Echoes sold per Antique Mysteries. (Assuming you don't need them for ravens or other story or Ambition requirements since you got your room, it costs 7 of them per 62.50 Echoes sold Primeval Hint, so selling them individually is better.) Once you raise your Orphanage Scheme to 6 or 10, you may use Graduation or Reunite a Dispossessed Orphan with Loving Parents of the two non-social options to raise MW. Considering the cost, it's better to use the Scheme 6 one (if you are not relying on player social actions instead,) as it's not worth the Echoes cost just for a minimum 40 cp higher lowest base MW reward.
(And if you are looking for player professionals to invite such as Midnighters, Correspondents and Conjurers, you may always invite my Midnighter the truthseeker to speak to your Orphans. He could always use the MW as well. If the wiki is correct [and since I'm on the wrong end of the inviting I can't directly check this,] you the owner of the Orphanage should get a flat 200 MW change points or cp which is better than the other above Schemes. The Scheme cp decrease I believe is also random, but should go down at least a level's worth if not more, or around 6-13 cp. )
If the orphanage is too costly, I'd suggest shuttering and grinding to get a Salon, but spend the Fate first to buy the Laconic Prodigy companion. (Even if you keep it, do spend Fate for this as it's one of the best companions in the game and only 20 Fate.)
The next option to increase MW requires free evenings and social actions all from Society and Scandal in your Lodgings. Inviting them into your Lodgings is the highest one for PoSIs. if you and a Non-PoSI both meet the requirements, you can Benefit from Flattery at Dante's Grill for their cp value of their MW rating up to 100 cp value of their MW (while they get Wounds and Suspicion lowered by 10 cp.) That option requires you to be Acquainted with them as in accepted a calling card. Alts are often used here. Should you have neither of these nor other options available there, you can always use Meet Someone for a Coffee at Caligula's at 1 CP/turn. Obviously, this is not for those near Time the Healer, but it works as a (yet another) grind.
Should you have Notability 5, when drawing the A visit from Slowcake's Amanuensis card, you may use Say nothing. Wait for the Amanuensis to speak instead for a free 3 cp MW increase every time you draw that card for no other cost than getting and Keeping Notability 5 or higher. Else, on that card, you have to pay the cost of 1000 souls or 100 Society to get around a 1-10 random cp MW. (Legendary Charismas can also try and make a 350 Charisma check for a 5 cp MW but you are not there yet should you choose this is your one-time T2 PoSI Legendary stat.) Boasting Wildly costs 1 Tale of Terror!!, 1 Scrap of Incendiary Gossip, and 1 Confident Smile and has a 50-50 chance to raise or lower MW by 1-10 cp. It is highly not recommended, but success or failure does not consume the card, should you wish to use other options when done; just don't use "Perhaps Not" while on that card if you wish to keep it.
Of course, if you have the MW to Use your influence to invite Slowcake's Amanuensis for a visit (did you swap your BDR items in to lower this value first to see if you are closer than you think or actually there,) then you can select that to auto-draw that card and use it to up the Notability.
The 4-card Lodgings have nice MW options with their drawn cards, but art a high cost sometimes. They are all acceptable in item/connections cost, except the Bazaar one (the Collection of Curiousities, Personal recommendation and 4000 cp Society or minimum 100 Society ranking costs are just too high for the 95-140 MW and 31-64 Echoes gained and would be much more cost effective to use the Townhouse card. However, people with Orphanages sometimes find it worth the cost/Echoes gained if they have ways to gain said items/connection that high quickly. Your call.) Make sure you can easily pass any stat checks/have second chances for these cards if needed/as applicable.
Finally, upconverting from tier 3 to tier 4 items gives a MW boost (again) around 1-10 cp. (The best option is 25 Stolen Kisses to 5 Favours in High Places at 12-20 cp. Use the Affair of the Box carousel to most quickly gain Stolen Kisses over upconverting them from however you gain 50 Compromising Documents.) This includes side-converting or swapping 50 of one item to 50 of another item. Often, you need to have 50 of said item for up or side converting. This link will help. Look at both low value to higher value and cross conversions in the table to find the MW items.
Should you want to know the best way to obtain a certain 4-card Brass Embassy room, I went through that recently. Since this isn't part of your question, I'll spoiler it to lessen the wall of text.
It's best-both for the faction rating and for the items required-to grind casing in the Flit and turn it in for the connection ratings or use it in Thefts of Particular Character for the required items, should you not already have more than around 50% of the base item (in this case, souls.) Even in this case, it's lot less costly (speaking about the value of Echoes, not necessarily what you are required to pay from your echoes account, as grinding always is an option,) to go for the secondary option obtaining a 4-card lodgings than getting the primary tens of thousands of base items at Penstock's Land Agency. (Technically, it's quicker to get the Brass Ring by upconverting 25 Bottles of Muscaria Brandy and the rare chance of a Night Whisper , but it's perfectly fine if you have the spare turns to try and get it from a Rare Success at Explore the Darker Corners at Seeking Curios and Secrets in the Forgotten Quarter or 50 Zee stories to 10 Partial Maps attempts. But if you use this route for the former, keep an eye on your Nightmares, as the only way to advance that is to change the Airs of London, which many do by playing turns there with options that auto-raise said Menace.) Fighting for one by the appropriate win or prize tokens in Knife and Candle takes too long unless you fight your own alt and that's no sporting game, is it? (Never however, unless desperate pay 40 Echoes to buy a ring.)
I hope all this helps and again, congratulations on your success so far! edited by the truthseeker on 11/18/2015

If you ever happen to spend all your Notability, you will be unable to force-draw the Amanuensis card even with enough MW to increase Notability. Fortunately with high BDR it's very easy to gain the first couple levels, so there's a thread or two in the Salon section of the forums for sending Notability to players not currently Notable. edited by Optimatum on 11/18/2015

After some dedicated grinding, I am now the proud owner of a room at the Royal Beth! I'm unsure what I should go for next, though - I already have a spouse (the Celebrated Artist's Model), which may have been a mistake, and I've got a ship and a Clay Sedan Chair.
That's pretty much all for BDR stuff, so I'm unsure which thing to go for first. I see the God's Editors mentioned a lot - do I have to finish a particular type of novel for them to accept me? They turned their noses up at my Tale of the Future.
I also have no Notability - I had Making Waves pretty high, but then it reset somehow before I could draw the Slowcake's Amanuensis card. How could I go about getting a lot of Making Waves for that first point of Notability? I need it to upgrade my Trickster profession to the next level.
Final question - what's this people are saying about upgrading your 4-card Lodgings to a 5-card one during Sacksmas?

1) If memory serves, God's Editors will take any novel except tale of the future, or a bunch of candles and a fair whack of church connections.
2) Your MW level is halved each week when TTH comes. There's a forum thread where people will donate you your first point of notability, after which you can draw the amanuensis card on demand from your lodgings. MW can be generated in a lot of ways, and notability becomes exponentially easier to gain with each point of BDR. Stealing tales of terror en masse in the Flit & converting is a popular option, but unless your BDR is near maximum you'll get a better rate per action by side converting t3 items - it's an endless loop, so no resource gathering required. There's also getting a salon or an orphanage, which are long term investments which pay out large bursts of MW & are useful for really high notability levels.
3) 4 card lodgings can be upgraded to 5 card ones throughout the year, generally at great expense. At Sackmas you can upgrade your lodgings (bazaar, brass embassy & Royal Beth) much more cheaply by spending taste and small amounts of notability at the Wicket. You need to manage your level of taste carefully, so have a look at the Sackmas guide thread for the full picture.

1. God's Editors are an Affiliation with 4 BDR, same as an Orphanage but cheaper to obtain. They'll take a few different novels or you can do the non-novel option. 2. The first point of Notability is always finicky to get since the Amanuensis card isn't very common. You can amass a bunch of Tales of Terror!! and, once you have the card, convert them all the way up to Incanabula as most of those conversion successes give MW. Alternatively you could just ask over in the Salon thread dedicated to giving people a first point of Notability. Once you have some, raising it is easy as the moment you have the requisite MW you can just summon the Amanuensis from your lodgings. 3. One feature of Sacksmas is spending the Putting the Pieces Together: The Taste of Lacre quality at Penstock's Wicket in January. The more costly options there are to upgrade the different four-card lodgings for 7-9 Taste, depending on which one, and 3 Notability. Aka it's a WAY better deal than the year-round method. The Brass Embassy option does need you to be soulless though, but if you have yours the devils will happily purchase it during the season for a Night-Whisper and seven Storm Threnodies.

The other MW option if you don't want to do a lot of resource grinding is doing Heists. Each successful heist gives you a good chunk of MW depending on how much Burglar's Progress you got. It's less effective on an action-per-action basis than side-conversions, but it's much more profitable, and more interesting that converting the same stack of stuff over and over again.
