Hello eveyrone, as the title indicates I am wodnering if anyone coudl give me tips on how to get the various items -and connections- to set up a salon. I have mostly all of the connections, and hte onyl qualities i am lackign are: A member in good standing and Connected Hell: 20. Along with this I lack the requisite cellars of wine, personal recomendations, and favors in high place. As such, I wonder if anyone has any tips for getting those elements I still require to set up the salon. Any and all tips would be highly appreciated in any case, thank you very much.

Um, a "saloon" is a bar. Or pub. Or bierhalle. Which we could probably use in FL, but right now I think you want to set up a salon -- a periodic meeting of wits, literary lights, and conversationalists.

The Connection to Hell is pretty easy. Just gather casing in the Flit and then cash it in to the Brass Embassy in the 'Sell Information' storylet (also in the Flit).

The 'Member in Good Standing' comes from joining either the Young Stags or the Partheneum clubs. You can progress that on the Bizarre Sidestreets.

(p.s. - You should also fix your profile link in your sig. It should point to http://fallenlondon.storynexus.com/Profile/raaret not community.failbettergames.com/Raaret )

I like to get my cellars of wine by converting up lower value wine items. Twenty-five bottles of Broken Giant will get you five Cellars of Wine. Both Personal Recommendations and Favours in High Places can be obtained by grinding up Talk of the Town through the Polite Invitation card. You can also get Favours by converting up Stolen Kisses. The Personal Recommendations are probably going to be the hardest part, as you only get one per Talk of the Town grind, they're expensive to assemble, and you'll need several for joining a club as well as the Salon.

Regarding the Cellar Of Wine, you only need two.

If you're an Author (advanced from Journalist) or Mystic (advanced from Campaigner) you'll receive 1x Cellar of Wine per week as part of turning in the An Earnest of Payment you receive when Time the Healer comes around.

(I don't expect this will be of use to you Corvo, as you probably don't want to have to wait two weeks for the required items, but for others who are looking to create a Salon it's certainly an option they can use to prepare in advance.)

Apparently you can also get them at the Fourth Coil in the Labyrinth of Tigers, or trade in other wines items at the Bazaar Sidestreets for Cellars of Wine - though I'm not sure if you have access to either of those locations, nor am I familiar with the specifics of those actions. (I was an Author for quite some time, so I've not needed to seek out that item.)

This list (http://fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/PoSI_Item_Crafting#Components)gives a good list for all the POSI crafting items, with alternative sources.

Looking at your profile at the time of this reply, you have a Revolting Mask, so your current profession is Watcher.

This means unless you are currently a PoSI, and you achieve enough Notability after resigning and switching to Journalist from the Bohemian card/Switching to Campaigner from the Church or Revolutionaries cards, you can't advance to Author/Mystic as Kittenpox mentioned. (You should not take these professions simply to build a Salon anyway, and should save up Notability and any needed components relating to this for your ideal Profession, whatever that may be if not Watcher-based.)

So I will give advice on your current profession, or profession with the possibility you could become an Agent soon most likely at best (assuming you want this line's or any line's the top profession of any tier will take a lot more time needing 5 Notability and the high 300 attribute check rather than just the 2 Notability as well as The unsigned message rare card for any of the tier 3-4 professions. For instance, it took me two tries and several days to draw the unsigned message card with a Watchful prime stat around 135 at the time to get Midnighter for the truthseeker.)

If you wish to change Profession lines and have some other path you are going for, do post that here so we can plan accordingly, listing what you have achieved Professionally so far.

The problem with this link is all it does is list the component cost and profession alternates/rainbow of offerings for some of the high-end components. I'll save some time and note the weekly Profession reward/Rainbow of Offerings here spoilered.
• Bazaar Permits-Licentiate (4)/Grey Men(1) or Wolfstack Days (6)
 • Cellars of Wine-Author or Mystic (1)/Spoils (1) or Sweet of Him (12) or Scholar Returns (4)
 • Volumes of Collated Research-Monster Hunter (3)/Spoils (1) or Scholar Returns (20)
 • Favours in High Places-Campaigner (1) or Midnighter (4)/Friends at Court (3)
 • Legal Documents- No Professional reward/Grey Men (3) or Spoils (1)
 • Nights on the Town-Author (1)/No Rainbow of Offerings
 • Personal Recommendations-No Professional reward/Spoils (1) or Friends at Court (2)
 • Strong-Backed Labour-Rat Catcher (1)/Tattooed Friends (12) or Wolfstack Days (6)
 • Use of Villains-Enforcer (1)/No Rainbow of Offerings
 • Whirring Contraption-No Professional reward/Spoils (1) or Scholar returns (1)
If you ever use that previous link, it's best just to quick-check the high end conversion amounts needed to make the items instead of hovering over the side-streets for each or looking each one up in a wiki.

if you're post-PoSI, a good link to use (still) is the End-Game Grinding to see the best ways of getting simple to high-tier components. This does not work however if you are not a PoSI yet, as many tips assume you are able to use the location's Unfinished Business options that are almost always being-a-PoSI required. When I later list component cost, or upconvert cost, use that link where to get any (more) basic components to craft stuff needed. Speaking of, let's begin.

Personal Recommendations cost 6 Stolen Kisses, 30 Compromising_Documents and 150 Intriguing Snippets per.
Favours In High Places cost 200 Cryptic Clues, 1 An Identity Uncovered 1 Secluded Address, 10 Scraps of Incendiary Gossip, and 25 Inklings of Identity per.
As noted previously, the easiest way to get Personal Recommendations and Favours in High Places without undue cost is the Polite Invitation card/Talk of the Town carousel grind. Unfortunately, even when successful in your checks almost all the time, it takes several draws and runs of the circuit just to get one of these Personal Recommendations or Favours in High Places (and I recommend the Personal recommendations first of the two if you want to choose one or both this way.) That means upconverting from lower materials or rare successes unless you can pick an option from "A Rainbow of Offerings." (And I recommend you save that options choice-whatever it may be-for an easier getting of a high-end non Tramp Steamer Ship or another Side Street option like either Club or Transportation requiring very many fourth tier items as well.)

Technically, if your Spirit of Hallowmas is 50 (as this was posted when the event was still going) choosing Publicly Forgive those Who Wronged You gives 1 Personal Recommendation and the ranking is used up. If it's higher (100 or more,) it's recommended to get a higher-tiered reward.

Technically again, if you win the Tournament of Lilies you could get a Personal Recommendation, but it's better to choose the Different Prize for the Book of hidden Bodies (and some street signs) which is more difficult to win without upconverting it.

Fortunately, Favours in High Places are a lot easier to win.
 • Having the appropriate 10 ranks on the dream stat on The Interpreter of Dreams then one of the Ask for help with communication/Ask for help with courage,
 • You can get 5 Favours in High Places with 25 Stolen Kisses using Ask the Muffled Intriguer to broker your Stolen Kisses.
 • Having 5-7 Favours: Criminals and Drawing An Implausible Penance can give one if you agree on Pugilism and Politics to beat up the Kingpin or Crime or punishment?'s Give Evidence , but adds a Turncoat ranking for the Affair of the Box carousel. (Don't do this unless already favoured to 5-7 and desperate for just one more. it's better to choose the other option anyway for either.)
 • People in a Foreign Office Governorship can get one at a State Dinner, but it's likely you're not here if you need a Salon.
 • Washi your Hands of the Jack of Smiles case sides against the Constables over another group and gives you 4, 100 Plaques and a specific faction bump notable for that group, but that literally is when you are about to finish a very long carousel for that story, requiring a trip to Polythreme and back again. You also may want to choose the other side which I will note its rewards later.
 • If you can get both Docks and Widow up to 30, you can choose on the Conflict card.Settle in the Widow's favour for 1 and 2400 jade. This means though you lose your Docks with 500 cp lost there. (Other options offer many Strong-backed labour and a 1-80 bundle, a small jade and labour reward and only 1-60 bundle for compromise in both sides with only 100 lost on both, and increasing in the Box Affair.)
 • If in the Cave of the Nadir and you have Nightmares at 6 and Having Recurring Dreams: Death by Water at 4, and you draw A Waking Dream of Water there, you can choose The Ship of Lights for 1 and 1 irrigo.

Rare successes giving 1 Favour in High Places for upconverting items can be won at:

You can get Cellars of wine from upconverting 1 Bottle of Broken Giant 1844, 5 Bottles of Strangling Willow Absinthe, 50 x Bottles of Morelways 1872, and 250 Bottles of Greyfields 1882.
As noted by Kaign, you also can get a cellar by upconverting 25 bottles of Broken Giant on The Affable Monsignor has a particular taste for the '44. You also get 4 Mysteries of the Elder Continent. Getting to this amount can be assisted by the very infrequent A presumptuous Little Opportunity card. (Although once you get to 5 Cellars of Wine, best to take the An improbable exchange option on the card.)

Also, if you choose another specific option-In the Snug-with the Constables for Jack of Smiles case, you can get a 4 Cellars of wine, 10 Stolen Kisses, a ton of Bohemian and Society and a few other things, but this is after a long, long story arc (going to and from Polythreme as only one segment.) And you can't close the case both choosing this and Wash Your hands, which is another path with the opposition instead.

As noted before by Kittenpox, but more detailed (as it's not that easy to get from there,) if you have progressed on the ship part to where you have the four main ship options, you could always temporarily buy a Tramp Steamer (sell it when you are ready and want to get one of the three other ships) Hunt a Plated seal, convert it in the fourth coil Labyrinth of Tigers by pulling all the stops and turning that in to the priest (no fate-locked story required.)

This option gives 3 Cellars of wine and 8 bottles of Broken Giant, but like above, is not quick on the time method. It's only recommended if you conveniently have the components/used some of them in this storyette specifically before to get to/near the point to readily buy a Rusty Tramp steamer for 100 Third City Relics. (If you as a reader of this have one of the three main ships, say huzzah and just hunt a Plated Seal and continue as noted.)
(And getting to that Wolfstack Docks storyette point requires you to have spent 1 Bazaar permit, 1 Legal Document, 1 Personal Recommendation, 1 Cellar of Wine, 1 Whirring Contraption, 1 Volume of Collated Research, and 2 Strong backed Labour to get to the buying a ship section.)

That should do it. Again, if you have questions on how to get other more basic (or even some of the Salon) components, use this End-Game Grinding link.
