Those interested in learning more about the historical milieu of Victorian London may find this website of interest: http://www.victorianweb.org/misc/vwintro.html . It includes scientific, historic, and literary resources of interest to the casual reader as well as someone taking a more rigorous approach. Also some pre-Victorian links (for example, to the Romantic writers of the beginning of the 19th century), but only as context.
