Well... I don't think there IS a best use for Trade Secrets (TS). When I was younger, I liked the stat bump. WOOOSH! Look at that stat go!
Later on I used it once for Antique Mysteries when pursued 4-card lodging (Royal Beth) and needed 50 of those. Was small help but it helped.
Now I'm saving two for writing a short story, since I decided I wanted the best potential one can get when writing a short story - though this is only for bragging rights and have NO significance in the game what so ever. You maybe won't even find that interesting to ever start that kind of grind.
So, really, it depends on your wish and current position in life (maybe stat bumps are not as important when your a veteran and completed most stories, etc.)

I waited and cashed in my first Trade Secret for the goodies, but I intend to use the next for stats boosts, at least until I have 100 in each stat. I didn't even notice that they had application for short stories, but since one of my whims is to someday have two classic short stories (one for bragging rights and one to sell), I'll probably look at that option, too. I'd definitely say that it is worth it to wait and convert your Professional Perks to Trade Secrets, though.

No. They are not worth using for stat boosts. 125 echoes is far more worthwhile. If you need stat boosts, grind them through second chance invitations and burning the chances for stat boosts. The returns are poor enough that the only good use for trade secrets is trading for goodies. It's only 150 CP for 10 actions.
In contrast, invite-second chances grinding can offer, if the wiki's numbers are accurate, an average of 26 cp for 6 actions, assuming you exclusively have the +1 second chance outcome. If you have a 50-50 ratio, which is more likely at your level, you get 6 cp per action. (this is also why the free evening invites are good. both people get 2 second chances from that. also note the hedonist option on the gift, and the everyone deserves a second chance on the great game + church conflict. both give 4 second chances per action.)
So you're spending an item worth 60 echoes before conversion to gain 9 stat points extra per action spent on using the item. A horrible waste, especially now, when new equips can get you much closer to your goal than 90 stat points will.

Well, that's good to know. One of the reasons I conceived of this club was precisely to grind stats through burning second chances, and I've found it quite useful in terms of actions per CP. I was going to see how much of a boost the TS gave my stats, but I may just use the TS for goods, then. It will be a few weeks before I get my next one, anyway (hard to believe I've only been playing five weeks).

It is a pretty good place to grind Walking the Fallen City and Seeing through the Eyes of Icarus. Plus, it's so pretty there.
And eating Plums there makes me Unaccountably Peckish, which makes me happy. I was so disappointed when I accidentally lost it the other day...

Easy methods to reach menace areas quickly. Easy methods to waste actions. once upon a time induced a horrible storyline that offered no rewards, and wasted vast quantities of resources, including your ability to sell a soul. if you had already sold it... let's just say that you'd do well to sell a wide variety of items, unless you like devils taking thousands of echoes worth of resources. It involved things like losing 60 levels worth of stat points, and other things.
There's only two reasons to do it. one is the peculiar kind of self-destructive exploratory madness. The other is the possibility that you have truly been cursed with the plauge that is one-of-each, since there are seven unique items for this, currently availible through no other means. perhaps that will change. it is in keeping with the spirit of the story.
It's called Seeking Mr. Eaten's Name, (SMEN for short.) and it's been temporarily discontinued. There are seven candles to lead you through the quest.
